Training Camp - Day 15

Well, looks like I'm one of the few webmasters still counting, as the official site, miamidolphins.com, skipped over day 14 yesterday and labeled it day 15. Well unless you count the pre-season game as a training camp practice, TODAY is day 15 and the FINAL day of training camp. This will be the final practice open to the fans and it starts at 10:15am so get going if you're going.

The Dolphins will likely be doing some game-planning for Saturday's match-up vs. Carolina. I'll do a little preview on that game tomorrow, but today I'd like to play some catch-up with some of the stories from around the league.
  • Eric Green had not been released by Miami for longer than a few hours before he was picked up by the San Francisco 49ers. Since it is an approximately 8.5 hour flight from Miami to San Fran, we have to assume this was all done over the phone, and that he hasn't actually signed yet, but has agreed to terms. The Chicago Bears also made an offer.
  • Someone mentioned on yesterday's blog comments that Serena and Venus Williams are buying into the Dolphins, and I thought it was a joke, but apparently it's TRUE! I'm not going to give any details, partly because I don't care, and partly because you'll be inundated with ridiculous 'slice' of life articles from geniuses like David Hyde and Harvey Fialkov on the subject. I'll let them 'serve' it up for you.
  • The Raiders cut fullback, Lorenzo Neal, yesterday. This guy has been around forever and helped many a running back look good. If he wasn't 38, I'd bet the Dolphins would be mighty interested. Despite being 38, I'd bet he's on another team as fast as you can say 'Eric Green'. It's funny on Hard Knocks last week they were fretting about fullbacks after their starter went down to injury. Maybe Lorenzo visits Cincinnati today?
  • I would hope for the price of a ticket, new Dolphins owner, Serena Williams, would come out in a leather miniskirt dress and pummel Jets fans with a steel tennis racket.
  • Left Guard, Justin Smiley, left practice yesterday early on and came back to ride the bike on the sidelines. According to Smiley he is ok. Hopefully just some soreness.
  • MSB 2010 mentioned yesterday that Brandon Fields kicked a 95 yard punt yesterday and I admit I rolled my eyes at that one, but the Miami Herald later reported "Punting out of the back of the end zone, Fields bombed a ball to the opposite 15-yard line. Yeah, we know. Depending how deep Fields was in the end zone, that's more than 85 yards. In the air. Yes, there were also several witnesses." So, HSB I have rolled my eyes in the opposite direction to make up for it.
  • My favorite newspaper blog bite from yesterday's practice reports: Kicking competition update: Barth hits from 41, Carpenter from 44. Yeah, that'll solve it.~ Mike Berardino, Sun-Sentinel.com - going from memory here but I believe in the Jax game Carpenter hit a 41 yard FG and Barth hit a 27 yard FG. I think we need to determine this competition winner like a game of darts. The winner has to get to 300 without going over....
  • And here are some quotes from the Jaguars.com Senior Editor, Vic Ketchman's live game-blog from Monday night:
"8:36 PM
Henne hits a big ball for 20 to the Jaguars 32. Jake Long is dominant.
8:41 PM
Henne to Lousaka Polite for a yard. Henne is very accurate.
8:43 PM
Williams dropped a touchdown pass. It was a beautiful throw by Henne.
9:01 PM
That's the half. The talent difference between Pennington and Henne is remarkable.
9:15 PM
Miami ran it on third and long. This is pretty boring.
9:39 PM
The Dolphins were a feel good story last year, but I don't see anything special in them tonight. Truth be known, they appear to be a team in rebuilding, which was masked last year by a weak schedule and the wildcat.

9:40 PM
Touchdown! Henne to Ernest Wilford of 33 yards. Gerald Alexander missed the tackle on the sideline. Good for Ernest, bad for Gerald.
9:43 PM
If I were the Dolphins, I'd make Henne the starting quarterback and get on with it."

Training Camp Practice Updates:
  • Contest winner, Seaphinfan, said yesterday he had his Halloween costume worked out already and it's catching on as Matt Roth is wearing shorts and a white Dolphins cap today....again. That means no practice this week and no game time this week. Time is rolling here and if he's not practicing come Monday, I'm placing him on the reg. season PUP list and moving on.
  • Omar Kelly tweets, in a slightly condescending way, that Reggie Torbor is the most improved player in camp and that the tight-end order is: 3rd Joey Haynos, 4th John Nalbone and 5th Ernest Wilford.
  • Wow, Omar says Joey Thomas is running at 2nd Corner across from Vontae Davis. I have a feeling Thomas is going to be tested this week and if he fails he will be gone the way of Eric Green.
  • Talk about a third party report, Dolfan Kent e-mailed me a report that was sent from his friend William, who is in attendance today:

Today’s AM practice from William:

  1. Pennington has a slight limp
  2. CB’s are playing tight coverage w/an attitude
  3. D. Thomas playing 1st string
  4. J. Porter didn’t practice
  5. Taylor not at practice
  6. V. Davis, immature or cocky, still trying to figure him out

Last nights practice McDaniel smacked Haynos in the head, no response from Haynos, J. Ferguson just laughed. Remember Tony is on the rough side, LOL.

  • If you don't get that reference, click here.
  • Brian Hartline spent a lot of time with the ones today - more of that moving people around to test them out.

  1. What does Vic Ketchman have multiple personality disorder?  "Henne is very accurate", "the talent difference between Pennington and Henne is remarkable" and then  "<span style=""><span style="font-family: verdana;">If I were the Dolphins, I'd make Henne the starting quarterback and get on with it."</span></span>

If the talent difference is that remarkable WHY would you make Henne the starter and "get on with it"?  LOL

I am NOT saying that Miami's talent level is so high that we are top of the league or anything, but don't be surprised if MOST of our cast offs this year get picked up for a look-see somewhere else.

You can almost bet a sure thing N.E. will pick up at least one again this year, even if it's just to spy on us.  It seems like they do every year in recent memory.

    Tin
The punting drill is always from the very back of the end zone
    so do the math
    95 yards
    Unreal but true
    consistently kicking 80 yards
pretty awesome if U ask me

I'm not sure where I heard it but some NFL pundit said back during the draft or free agency that Lorenzo Neal is done. He's not the same guy who lead the way for so many RBs.

Didn't Fields have a 65 or 70 yard punt in a game last year?

Our roster is at 78 now and I would think that we might be looking for another young corner with some experience being that we only have 12 DBs right now, 7 CB and 5 S. I think the other position could be TE.

In the Jacksonville game we didn't get the ball to the TEs very often and I wonder if it was by design. It seemed that the WRs were the focus but I'm sure we'll see some more TE targets in the Carolina game.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Rockphin, you're missing the point, he's saying Henne is MORE talented than
    Pennington....wake up bro!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Well that's great but I'd rather he be able to kick it in the field of play
during the game. It's no good kicking 80 yards in practice if you shank a
15 yard punt in every game.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Well they did throw to Martin once or twice and Nalbone was targeted twice
(once on the Henne INT) and Wilford caught the touchdown out of the TE
position so they did get opps. To be honest, when White went in they ran
the spread a couple of times and I think Haynos was in there and targeted
once as well, but in those roll outs, White almost always throws to the
near-field out receiver, so the TE is usually out of the picture there. I
think with Pennington in there you'll see more of the same, with the TE's
being his favorite target. With Henne it's more about stretching the field
and with White it's more about moving the chains on the outsides. Kind of
predictable, really, but predictability leaves opportunity for big
    surprises, right?

  7. The Knight who says Ni!August 20, 2009 at 8:18 AM

Henne has a stronger arm but I don't think he's ready. He stinks in the red zone most of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I thinks that's a bit unfair, he nailed Ricky in the hands on a perfectly
thrown ball and Ricky dropped it. In Arizona last year he threw a TD in the
red zone (i think it was from inside the 15), and the Wilford TD was from
    just outside the red zone.
I think the reports from practices just show that our D tightens up in the
red zone, which they did last year as well. Overall our D was pretty damn
good in the red zone, it was everywhere else that they couldn't stop
    anyone....

    ReplyDelete
  9. The Knight who says Ni!August 20, 2009 at 8:27 AM

Yeah I guess, it just seemed like the focus was getting the ball to the WRs and taking a look at all those guys.

I was pleasantly surprised by White's poise. He didn't look like a rookie QB with the deer in the headlights look. He's still got things to work on but I think he will definitely be a weapon this year because he runs like a gazelle and he'll escape most pressures and have plenty of open field to run out of the spread. He probably won't take too many hits either. They'll tell him to get as many yards as you can (1st down) and slide legs first (not head) or run out of bounds.

The threat of his passing is what makes him dangerous. Teams will have to respect that but he'll have to make them respect that by proving he can do it. So he needs to show more passing skills in the preseason. Once he does that, his legs become a very dangerous weapon for us.

    ReplyDelete
  10. The Knight who says Ni!August 20, 2009 at 8:29 AM

Yes there are some examples of him making some plays in the red zone, but he still struggles in practice with the cadence and getting everyone set. He's had some issues with the snap too. It's a high pressure situation and he presses too much down there. When he improves on that, that is when the trifecta will think he's truly ready to be the guy.

    ReplyDelete
  11. "he runs like a gazelle"
    wow that was...nevermind
but you are right he did look a lot more comfortable than I thought he
    would.

    ReplyDelete
  12. true, and these things are only worked out by actual game time. A lot of
the issues are noise-related and where's the noisiest part of the stadium -
the end zone out to about the 15. With all these reports of the team
working almost every day on red-zone work, I didn't hear any reports of
noise being brought in. Maybe some of the fan attendees can fill us in if
    they brought in the speakers.

Why did gazelle get you all discombobulated? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  14. The Knight who says Ni!August 20, 2009 at 8:54 AM

Good point. Henne is going to get a lot of playing time in the preseason. I could see the QBs splitting the playing time in the Carolina game the same as the Jaguars game. But at some point you want to see White handle halftime and the 3rd quarter adjustments and Henne gets some end of game reps. That will probably be the 4th PS game. The 3rd game Pennington will probably play the 1st half and into the 3rd. We might also see White come into the game during Pennington's time to show the new element of the spread. It's not really a surprise anyway, it's another element of the offense.

Joey Thomas has good size and is a good athlete. Not sure if he's made significant improvements in his technique and cover skills. But good point on him being a target. That's what the coaching staff wants. These guys need to be tested in game situations.

    1st team:
    W. Allen
    Smith
    Jones (NB)

    2nd team:
    Davis
    Thomas
    J. Allen (NB)

    3rd team:

    ?
    ?

    ReplyDelete
  16. the third team would probably consist of the nickel backs and Billingsley.
But I think after the next game the team will probably start eliminating
third units as they'll be practicing less (4 days a week, usually longer
meeting sessions and one practice days) and working more on installing set
    plays.
Of course I could be wrong and they could bring in another free agent corner
    on Monday - who knows!?

Yeah I figured Billingsley was in there somewhere but I wasn't sure if he's lining up as an outside corner or as a nickel.

I would think that Davis, Thomas, J. Allen and Billingsley and maybe even Smith will all rotate with each other. Sparano said in his press conf. that Smith was looked at with the 1st team this week and that could change. I agree Smith is probably still the front runner as the starter but the coaches may not want to him to let up just yet competing for a role.

This 2nd PS game is going to begin to set up the depth chart and what we see in the 3rd PS game will probably be what we see in the regular season.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I would have to agree with 13kvFins that green was signed incase we did not get to draft our CBs. It cost the team a little money but no big deal. This move does send a message to everyone that PS games do matter. It looks like I will be in the Tampa area for the 3rd PS game so I am going to try and make it.

    GO Dolphins

  23. Still, they had to chance to sign Bodden but they chose Green. I have
always thought the signing was a big mistake. Don't these guys watch
game-film before they sign a player? LOL. Green was pretty bad in Arizona,
one of the reasons why they sucked. They benched him and then suddenly got
better defensively - a coincidence? I think not.

    ReplyDelete
  24. maybe we should sign him...

because my work network routes everything from sacramento through atlanta in
an efficiency meltdown. So anyway lately I've just been trying to get them

    ReplyDelete
  34. Tin, I have a few from today, Ill hold off from sending them. Check page two, I linked one that was the best shot of the day.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Knight, I can't fill in all the blanks, but most teams don't carry a "3rd" team player at all positions. At CB for instance it's very common to keep 5 since the 5th theoretically can be plugged in on either side, Same goes w/ safety, very very few teams (that I know of) keep 6 safeties...usually 4. I our case call J. Allen the "3rd team" (really I've actually rarely heard the term "2nd team Nickelback" prior to Omar's usage this offseason, most people just call it the "dime" back) CB and probably Safety as well. J. Allen really won me over this weak, he's a great ST player, and his versatility might have slowed his development, but makes him an asset at virtually any position in the Defensive Backfield.

Also, Clemons at backup safety...we've got enough guys for the roster, but signing a developmental type guy to finish the preseason is likely IMHO.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Brian, you take GREAT pictures. Could you give HSB some lessons...dwarf cheerleaders and full headshots of Crowder making googly eyes at the camera aren't exactly pro quality :)

    uk, you're such a nationalist.  :-P

    ReplyDelete
  39. Jahndoh, the 2nd and 3rd team designations are just for the practice
sessions during the off/pre season. it's just a way to get everyone equal
reps and have fresh legs at every position, that's all. There's no
indication at this point that a 1st team nickel guy (N. jones) would play
more in the reg season than a 2nd team outside corner like V. Davis. I
would think the coaches would whittle it down to the best 5 corners rather
than by position in these practices. But the coaches have surprised me
    before, so who knows.
Still, I go with the conventional 9 DBs and my early prediction is:
    W. Allen, Sean Smith, V Davis, J Allen, N. Jones, Y. Bell, G. Wilson, T.
Culver (who I honestly think could be starting for most teams in the NFL)
and Clemons. Clemons has sort of had a disappointing off-season so far, I'd
like to see him smack someone in the mouth on Saturday, because Courtney
Bryan's making more noise than him.

  71. I recall hearing last year, or maybe it was cram crameraon the year before, of them piping in crowd noise into the bubble.  I wonder if they will do that this year to help the guys get ready.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I didn't read it that way.  maybe you are right.  I don't agree with his assesment if that is what he meant.  Sure Chad H. has a stronger arm, but more talented? only in a phisical way.  Mentally Chad P. is years ahead of Henne. (as he should be with 9 or so years more experiance.)

    ReplyDelete
  73. Does that come with fries and a drink??

    ReplyDelete
  74. They did do it last year and they might still do it, but I'm sure they did
it earlier on last year, as in before preseason games started

    ReplyDelete
  75. You don't have to agree with his assessment, and there's lots of people who
don't, but that is what he meant.

  82. That's NOT TS' autograph,it's CLEARLY a wildFIN play,(it's soooo obvious)..
TG is the top of the T(9 route), RW is the base of the T, DBess is running the Y route(right to left),
PW after faking to RW,and RB backpeddels the S,while RB runs the P arano/sideways z...
The play is clearly designed to draw the CB to RW,and the S to DB,leaving TG alone in the endzone..
QUICK delete that photo, the redcoats are coming, the redcoats are coming...

  83. CC's clearly in adornment of HSB...
Did CC star as WARF(or whatever his name is),on StarTrek?? Striking resemblance!!

  84. DAMNNN, Chad 85 DRILLED that xp,would of been good from 40!!
GREAT TD catch by cincy's simpson 89,called back for BS O pass inteference(pushin off),
FRICKEN CRAP,the league even try's hard to GIVE the redcoats PS w's !!

EVEN IF the guy did push-off(I don't see how),he should have been given that catch,
I don't care if the WR hit the DB w'a hammer, the DB had NOTHING to say about that TD reception..

Way to burn'em back to back on 4th and long JT O'Sullivan!!

  85. Patriot singular. I am from England, but have no allegiance whatsoever with New England (although I did visit the Cheers bar and drank a lot of Sam Adams which is quite good for an American beer) ;)

    ReplyDelete
  86. I once went to New England and ordered clam chowder and they brought me
    something red and runny.
That's how I knew something was wrong with those people.....

  87. aw, not another one, professor!

  88. LOL. You'll find out what I was testing for after week 4! Can't say anymore without the need to kill you afterwards ;)

Coupla technical questions on the new format - when I refresh, the comments section always goes back to p1 and we poor users have to trawl back to the end for new comments. Can we not have them all on one page pls? I remember a virtual revolt on the SS and you appear to have flown completely under the radar on this?

Also, when I go to the Smiley menu, it's empty of choices. What happened? I had to type the wink above, but it magically converts upon posting.

PS I miss the exotic food section. Well, technically, I didn't like the KKburgers, but the scootering snails was very amusing. Has it been discontinued already?

    ReplyDelete
  89. uk, I am trying to get the comments to not jump to a new page after 15 (i
think) comments. It used to be every 50 comments but since they revamped
the system it went down to 15! The system is still in a beta mode and I've
e-mailed the people responsible but I expect they're swamped since switching
over and haven't gotten back to me as of yet. To be honest, it's been a bit
difficult maintaining the site during the week as I can't even access it
very often at work. I will, however, be online tomorrow during the Carolina
game so I'll be able to tinker around with it.
As for the exotic food, you wouldn't believe how sensitive these Americans
    can be about food....

    ReplyDelete
  90. Appreciate the update and I feel for tyou on IT when it goes wrong. We've all become dependent on it now. Scary huh?

Considering some of the food I have seen Americans eat, I would say all sensitivity had been lost forever? That revolting orange cheese that you smell in EVERY public place baking away until it no longer resembles a foodstuff (did it ever?) has to take the biscuit. I gag every time I smell it and that's a LOT over there. Unless you include cheese in a can. That is just plain WRONG. Cheese has no right to be in a can. On the head of a Packerfan - ok - but not in a can, please.

  91. yeah but the stuff the British call pizza is barely edible. Thank heavens
there's so many Italian pizzerias around (at least in London) or else I
would've gone crazy. I don't know where you're going when you visit, but we
do have a full assortment of REAL cheese over here, lol. The one thing we
don't have is the perfection that is the British doner kebab. The
American-Turk-Germans over here just can't seem to get it right, if you can
    even find one.
Speaking of cheese in a can have you seen the cheeseburger in a can? I
    think it's from Sweden?

    ReplyDelete
  92. Agree - no one does pizza like the italians.

I've never really tried to eat much cheese in the US, but in all the malls and some of the bars and stuff I've eaten in, that smell of deep-fat frying and baked cheese on EVERYthing .... yuk. I'm not super-healthy or anything but .....

I have seen the burgers, but never tried one. I'm not fond of dodgy meat mashed together into a burger (good burgers are different) but I will eat Hollands pies and suet puddings, which I'm sure have even more dodgy meat in them!

    uk, ok gotcha!

Sam Adams is very good and there are lots of other good American beers, which we call micro-brews. Pete's Wicked Ale is one. There are many different flavors to choose from.
