Tin Bits - Thursday, 2/11/10

  • Asked who was the toughest receiver he ever covered, Boise State cornerback, Kyle Wilson (the guy with his own customized RV at the Senior Bowl) said:
"Hmm, the toughest? Davone Bess from Hawaii. When he's bad, haha, he's bad. He's a tough guy to guard in the slot. Especially that year, my sophomore year when they had Colt Brennan. Definitely one of the best. What I noticed about him was that he had really had good footwork. And in that offense, where they were very accurate and on the same page, the combo was deadly."
  • Chad Henne, fresh off his win in the Rachel Ray Super Bowl Cook Out Competition, won the Audi Efficiency Challenge as well, and has thus been the winningest NFL QB so far in the off-season. In the event, Henne had to drive from Washington D.C. to Miami in a lovely new Audi Q7 TDI.  In a Top Gear-style of logic, Audi decided to use a V-12 to showcase their fuel economy.  He competed against Osi Umenyiora and several media members including Bill Simmons of ESPN.com and Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports.

  • Former Hawaii slotback and newly signed Miami Dolphin WR, Ryan Grice-Mullen was a guest instructor at last weekend's Hawaii Speed and Quickness clinics on the UH campus.  Word is that Davone Bess was also an instructor....you know what they say, those who don't have speed, teach speed.  One thing I can say about these two guys, they are really loyal to Hawaii for giving them a chance.
  • The rumor buzz is really starting to grow about the Bills trading for Dolphins' backup QB Tyler Thigpen.  The speculation really only started to take foot after Chad Pennington 's agent announced he wanted to come back to Miami.  Thigpen is linked to new Bills head coach, Chan Gailey, as he was the Kansas City offensive coordinator in 2008.  Some people are also saying that since Buffalo's O-line is so shoddy, a mobile QB like Thigpen would be the best fit.  Well that doesn't really take into consideration that Buffalo's O-line was shoddy due to trading Jason Peters and losing a handful of players to injury.  They actually have a lot of young talent on their O-line, including Eric Wood, Jamon Meredith, Andy Levitre, Richie Incognito, Demetrius Bell, etc.  There's a good chance that their O-line will be head and shoulders above the unit they had in 2009.  In any event, I don't see them drafting anymore, they are young enough on the line.  This gives them some freedom with their draft picks, of which they have 9.  Keep in mind that Miami traded their 5th round pick for Thigpen last year, so Buffalo would probably have to offer up something better than that to Miami, especially considering it would be an inside the division move, which in itself makes it unlikely.
  • Speaking of the draft, there are six teams that currently only have 5 draft picks.  Chicago is the worst off because they don't pick until the 3rd round (74th overall) due to the Jay Cutler trade.  You may recall last year, the Dallas Cowboys didn't pick until the 69th pick due to the Roy Williams trade.
  • The NY Jets are one of the teams with only 5 picks, and considering they have a lot of aging players to replace, their foray into the playoffs could be a bit of a one-hit wonder.  They have 16 players who will be in their 30s in 2010 including all 3 of their nose tackles, two of their running backs (Tony Richardson is 38), 3 of their 4 starting linebackers and almost all of their special teams specialists (Feely - 34, Izzo - 36, Dearth/LS - 34).  They are a team that also can not sign any Unrestricted Free Agents or make any trades during the off-season unless a new CBA is agreed and signed in the next few weeks.  This means they could be up shit creek in a year's time, having to play catch up.  The concept of a lockout in 2011 means the whole team could be using walkers by the time play starts up in 2012.  They need to replace several players and just don't have the picks to do it.

Interesting stuff, especially on the Bills and Thigpen. One thing about their young talent on the OL, will Eric Wood ever play again? His injury was gruesome with that compound fracture in his leg.

      ReplyDelete
    2. Yeah it was a pretty ugly injury, thanks to the NFL for playing it over and
over and over again. Still, I think they have so many young players they're
more likely to go free agency if they need to bolster the line. I think the
average age of their line is about 23.
Of course, no sooner do I write about that trade rumour that Gailey comes
      out and say this:

    3. Maybe since Dolphin coaches messed up Pat Whites throwing mechanics and without gloves
We could trade them Pat White instead for a better draft pick

Thigpen looked real good up til the "manning SB like Int"

      ReplyDelete
    4. I would hope we don't trade Thigpen if they truly want to run a spead offense with someone that can throw the ball.  I don't like him going to another afc east either.  But if we can get better by doing so than I'm all for trading him.  The names on the back of the jerseys mean little to me.  Although I do have my favorites as everyone does, I'd rather see Miami in the playoffs with a bunch of nobodies, than talk about next year at the end of the regular season.

    5. IMO Pat White has ZERO trade value.

I'm not sold on the idea that we can rely on Pennington. Another shoulder/rotator cuff injury heading into his 11th season with questions already about whether or not he has the arm strength to get them to the next level.

I think Thigpen has some upside and I haven't written Pat White off though I do think his future will be as a specialist, not as a legit QB. Pat White has running skills but questionable passing skills at the NFL level. We'll know more about where he is when training camp starts. He's going to get a 2nd year here so talking about cutting him and trading him is a waste of time.

As for this idea that changing throwing mechanics is a bad thing, just recently Phil Simms talked about it right before the Super Bowl, and he said if you watch film of Peyton Manning's career, the guy you see his first few years in the league and the guy you see now is like night and day as far as throwing motion and mechanics. He's become more accurate especially down the field in recent years.

Tom Brady also changed his throwing mechanics. It just takes time and when fans don't see immediate results they get down on the player before he ever really put it all together.

With all the young QBs that the Bills have, I'm not sure they would trade for Thigpen. Is he really head and shoulders above the rest on their team or more of the same? Thigpen might be a quality backup QB. The Bills are loaded with backup QBs. LOL

Rumors are the Eagles are ready to go with Kevin Kolb at QB so McNabb could be a QB the Bills target. He won't be cheap though and are they a McNabb away from competing right away and is McNabb willing to play up there for 2-3 years before they're ready to compete?

      ReplyDelete
    9. Yes
Sad & Hope one day soon we are wrong
      Agree Tin
Hoping other NFL teams see him as a rookie and a project

      Where Thigpen has game

What the heck do we do with Pat White now?
Was lucky enough to shake his hand, get autograph and talk to him for a few minutes as he stood right infront of me after camp twice
Pat carries himself real good and was obviously raised by morally good people
      Was really pulling for him

Really believe Dolphin coaches ruined this kid

      Nothing for nothing but
My boy and I still throw an NFL ball daily, many times 2x daily(still rehabing since spinal surgeries)

Former school running  QB with a gun
Anyway when he was younger I took him for two weeks to All Star Football camp here in South Florida
was the greatest camp as I stayed everyday start to finish with him and some of his friends watching
Speaking of Chris Chambers,  he was there as the star Dolphin WR and took pictures got autographed ball, jersey etc
Randy McMichaels was also suppose to show but actually was arrested for domestic violence the night before
Many UM coaches were there and many other Dolphin "scrub players played with the kids and were excellent teaches and very nice to the small group of kids  Danny Kannel was also there and threw the rock and gave an excellent motivational speech to the kids
Anyway to make a long story longer (LOL) One of the Dolphin CBs really took to my son and kept him on the field much longer in reps and games than the others
Really taught him a lot and nicknamed him  "the little Jammer"
At the end of camp the Dolphin CB took of his NFL gloves autographed them and handed them to my son
He used to hang them on a hook on the ceiling over his bed where he slept at night next to a shelf with all his other autographed Dolphin stuff
Now he just turned 16 and the gloves fit
well he has been throwing again(post surgery) and has his gun back
but take off the gloves and the tight spiral and accuracy has much to be desired

This is how I relate Pat White throwing so well in college and
Then having Parcells duck in his golf cart

      They screwed up Pat White
      If It Aint Broke
      Dont Fix It

    10. I hope we keep Thigpen.  I saw for us, and against us with KC ... the man is a gamer.  His correctable flaw is he tries to do too much too often, a little schooling "Take what they give or throw it away" may make him a top performer.

We're still not set at QB, have to see more from Henne to be sure, so Thigpen is still a prospect IMHO.

The trouble is, if our best QB comes back (Penny), we have a log jam because of Pat White.  Sure wish they would have drafted a defensive stud on White's pick ... but still have no idea what we have in White, although it sure doesn't look like much so far!!

      Cheers, JerryD

    11. The Knight who says NiFebruary 11, 2010 at 4:51 PM

JerryD, I think Henne showed he has the tools and the makeup. He just needs to keep playing. He's our starting QB. The trifecta just wants to keep him on his toes. I have no doubt he'll work his ass off during the offseason and training camp because he's confident in his ability and wants to be great.

His accuracy improved down the stretch and he had three 300 yard games in his last 4 with average at best receivers. He proved he could dink and dunk and keep the team competitive and also hit a few big throws here and there. We have to give him more playmakers at WR and TE.

The 2009 season was his first real taste of playing in the NFL and he passed the test big time. He's gonna get better.

    12. Tin, thanks for some good new thoughts to think about. The SS is really at a low, so much that I went back to Miami Herald to get some new info.Palm Beach had a post on Roth but every time I tried I got a tennis article.Keep up the good work much appreciated.

The SS has screwed up royally.

Hawk, I get info from all those sites but I don't participate on their blogs. The PBP once in awhile. The Herald no more. To quote Yogi Berra, half of that forum is retarded. It's 90% nonsense and 10% coherent. LOL

Tin's site is the best place to really get into the Dolphins, but he can't devote all his time to it like a newspaper can.

    14. Hey Knight, that's my point. He does this in his spare time and beats the other guys up for no or little money. I think Tyler has allot of up side, would not trade him to a AFC team. Henne for first year I think he did really well. Look forward to next year and see what happens

    18. The Knight who says Ni!February 12, 2010 at 6:35 AM

Uhhh... yes! I don't get the criticism of Phil Simms. I think he's the best color commentator in the game and I've always enjoyed listening to his football analysis especially on QBs. I've heard many interviews with him on radio and he's always provided a deep insight into the game that others just don't bring. I'm a Phil Simms fan so...

      ReplyDelete
    19. "I think he's the best color commentator in the game"
Wow you guys are all on the Tequila...
I'll admit he's better than Dierdorf, but best in the game? For starters,
he only ever talks about the QBs...and there's no way he's better than
Collingsworth or even Troy Aikman (as much as I hate to say it).

      ReplyDelete
    20. The Knight who says Ni!February 12, 2010 at 7:38 AM

      Collingsworth and Aikman are solid.

      ReplyDelete
    21. I think Simms is the best.  Aikman is right up there too.  Collinsworth is annoying but does have occasional good insight.

      ReplyDelete
    22. I wouldn't trade him anyways.  I am in the minority here but I'd rather keep him for one more year.  I think they reached with their #2 pick but he still can have value and was a very good college player.  You can't say after one season he is in our out of the NFL.  There are many guys, especially QBs, who take several years or more to become starters.

      ReplyDelete
    23. I don't know...  How does he look in an apron?

      ReplyDelete
    24. Sad thing is that Tin is doing a better job part time than the SS is with 2 full timers!  Seems like they are changing things up in typical corporate screw it up fashion.  They must have Omar doing other things as he's really fallen off lately too.  Herald sucks too and Phinsider is decent.

      ReplyDelete
    25. I agree that Thigpen has upside.  How old is he?  I thought he was pretty good in KC considering their lack of talent.  I would think he could be a solid backup if not potential starter in a couple of years.

      ReplyDelete
    26. There was a definite line in Collinsworth's career where he went from just
providing the insight to being super cocky - right around the time he won
some award or got a new contract or something. I would say Simms is the
best on CBS, but I think Aikman is better overall.
To be honest, if it wasn't such an NFL frathouse, they would have hired some
of the college commentators - there's a couple of them that blow all these
NFL guys out of the water.

      ReplyDelete
    27. Oh come on, be fair, it's more than 2....they have their own full-time IT
dept to keep things running, I just have a really screwed up failure of html
      knowledge!!
I love Omar, but for the last 6 months all he does is tweet about his
domestic arguments or seeing some hottie on the street.
Anyway, it's much appreciated having you guys come here and contribute to my
Dolphin/Football obsession. And for the record, those are not ads on the
site, but PSAs. I receive no cash for this site, it's done purely for the
      love of the game.

      ReplyDelete
    28. Thigpen must be about 25/26?
Keep in mind he was a 7th round pick, then we traded a 5th for him. Now I
think we could eek out a 4th. But I'm not in favor of trading him because
as you said he's a solid backup who can actually give you a chance to win if
Henne goes down. Not only that, but if he has to come in and plays well
again, he could be worth a 3rd round pick or actually start a few games.
That's good return on your investment.

      ReplyDelete
    29. I think you're kidding yourself if you're even entertaining the idea that
Pat White could be a starter at any position in the NFL. No one asked him
to be the starter, so that's not how he's been judged. He was asked to come
in for a handful of snaps a game and he basically produced nothing but a lot
of gasps of horror from the fans and a couple of dents in Parcells' golf
      cart.

    30. We Have Playmakers???February 12, 2010 at 8:25 AM

I like Simms as well.  Aikman is probably the best out there & he doesn't try to be as much as a wise ass.

I'm not sure how anyone can listen to Collinsworth.  I can barely even watch games on Sunday night.  He's goofy & talks WAY too much.  He was a very good WR in his day but I've hated him since he screwed up the original 'Inside the NFL' with Len Dawson & Nick Buonocotti.

      ReplyDelete
    35. We Have Playmakers???February 12, 2010 at 8:44 AM

I like Thigpen's upside & I think he can become a pretty decent QB if he can cut down on the INT's.  Whenever the name Pat White or Chad Pennington comes up as Henne's back-up, I start to get nauseous.  White scares the hell out of me & it's time for Pennington to become a QB coach since he can barely throw.

I think that Parcells did well by getting Thigpen for a 5th.  Considering how difficult it has been for this organization to get QB's, I think it would be nuts to trade him especially to the Bills.  Is he going to be the next Jim Kelly for them?  Not very likely but he could win some games for them so let the Bills continue to struggle as much as possible.

To me, it looks like this blog did at the beginning(I think).  It does have a definite retro feel.   Anyone want to play a game of pong?

Oh, and speaking of games, I had an idea!  Tinshaker, if you aren't going to do one of your contests for the draft, is there any way to have a Wonderlic on here?  With a timer that starts as soon as you start it so no cheating?  I thought it might be fun to see how we might stack up against these players, not to mention each other.

Brandon Graham could be a sleeper pick. He fits the mold of 3-4 rush LB.

    52. I don't think LaFell is a 2nd rd pick at all, but it's hard to judge the
climate this early on. I think Graham couldn't have had a better Senior
Bowl week and he looks to be in tremendous shape, so a solid combine should
lift him into that top 15 range. I feel it in my bones that Nolan is going
to have him near or at the top of his list come April.

      ReplyDelete

You think Lafell is a legit top 15?

      ReplyDelete
    56. I think he's a legit 1st rounder. Until the combine/pro days it's
impossible to rank everyone especially players who didn't attend an all-star
week. The Dolphins are going to place far more emphasis on player
interviews than anything else, hence why we drafted JD Folsom, John Nalbone,
Patrick Turner, Pat White, etc. last year.

      ReplyDelete
    57. KC had very good recieving corps that year.

      ReplyDelete
    58. Right on WHP.  I'm no more sure of what the Dolphins will do than anyone else.  I some times question what they are thinking.  With players like White, Wilford, Wilson, and letting go of Roth, Hill, Goodman.  They make you wonder at times.  I guess all teams make blunders and I don't see them because I only care and watch what the Dolphins are doing.

I would not like to see Thigpen going to another AFC east team.  Plus I think they can use him for when they run the spread, the guy has game.  What they do with Penny will have a great bearing on if Thigpen stays.  They are not going to give up on White that easy, because the trifecta have a huge ego.  As for Pennington he'll get every chance if healthy they can allow for him because of loyalty and what he did for the team.  At least those are my thoughts.

      ReplyDelete
    59. The Knight who says Ni!February 12, 2010 at 11:44 AM

Lafell seems to fit the mold of the type of WR we need. Good size, speed and he was productive in college.

      ReplyDelete
    60. I can't argue against that but you have to admit that was a different Pat White that what you saw in college.  He looked like a deer in the headlights in all the NFL action he saw.  All I'm saying is give the kid another chance.  Even Kordell Stewart had some good games as a starter and went on to have a decent NFL career.

      ReplyDelete
    61. I prefer the mute button when he's talking myself.  He's as bad as the CBS pregame show!  Sharpe and Boomer are just embarrasing.  And you can throw Costas in that mix too!  He's the king of all ass hats!

    64. I love Graham but I'm not sure the Trifecta will take him at #12 due to his smaller size than they'd like at OLB.

    65. One thing that gets overlooked with LaFell is maturity and route-running.
LSU don't play no spread offense and the SEC doesn't play soft defense
either. Someone with LaFell's ability would've put up Crabtree type numbers
in another conference and offensive scheme, IMO.
He needs to put on another 10 lbs and then he'll be a force. Reminds me a
lot of Randy Moss, but I think I'm the only one who thinks that...

    66. Porter got his way. Dolphins released him today

    67. Also i agree with Fang about some decisions made by the trifecta. While i don't think Hill & Goodman were great players it seemed like our D was really playing well or gelling... sometimes chemistry is better then talent.

    68. You forget Nolan just worked with Dumervil in Denver. Graham's a bit taller
      isn't he?

    69. Well, I have said for the last 3 or 4 years that Pat White is not as good as
he gets credit for. Don't forget I'm a Big East guy, and saw many WVU
games. White benefited a lot from having a very good blocking team all
around him and having Steve Slaton being the biggest threat on the team.
Also, any QB that plays in an option offense is going to have bloated
running numbers. If you think Pat White was special in college, take a look
at someone like Armanti Edwards or Matt Grothe and then get back to me.
Grothe missed 10 1/2 games and still broke Pat White's record. And he did
it with a terrible offensive line unlike White who had a much better
      Offensive line.
I never understood the 'Pat White is the best at what he does' argument,
      because he clearly wasn't.

    71. HEART CJSpiller, but hope McClain falls to us @12!!
IFF that happens,I'll hope that ONE of 3 RBs Anthony Dixon (proj 2nd rndr),
OR Toby Gerhart (proj 2nd/3rd rnd, OR Montario Hardesty (proj 3rd rndr) fall to us in the 4th !!
      I WANT D with @LEAST the 1st 3 pks (ILB,OLB,NT,S)!!

(Heard that JAX is considering Tebow in the 1st ahead of our pk),
that'd be quite a reach, but it'd bring ALL the Gator fans to Jax,and they're in dire need of selling seats!!
That would/could likely drop a high profile D prospect into our laps,
(IFF Den doesn't jump McClain WE HAVE TO!!)

MYYY PRESENT ULTIMATE IS 1st ILB McClain, 2nd Hybrid OLB/DE/ILB BGraham, 3rd (TOP NT,S,OLB available)!!

      I like Thigpen,IFFF PENNE doesn't return,(but IFF he does),
I'd GLADLY take a 3rd/4th for Tyler,(and take an above RB w'that pk),
WHILE claiming (CP WANNABEE) QB Matt Nichols Eastern Washington in the 7th or as a FA to be "OUR" #3...

I also like Jevan Snead (proj 4th rndr),but NOT b/4 the 5th @ the earliest..

      GOFINS!!

    72. WOWWW,COMPLETLY FORGOT about PW!!
(I'll STILLLL take NICHOLS) for affordable insurance,(what a concept)...

Plus I'd like a figment of my last name on a FIN jersey,(preferably #8)!!

    73. I don't think Graham will fall out of the 1st - at the moment he's in the 15
to 20 range, and I expect he'll do really well at the combine.

      ReplyDelete
    74. YEA I KNOW,but I like HOPING for my $$$s worth,(gettin gyz 10-15 to 20 pks beyond their projection)!!

      IFF Graham doesn't fall that farr,MAYBEE DBryant will, I KNOW,I KNOW,NOT LIKELY,
but all's I have is my hopes and dreams for "OUR" DOLPHINS!!

I agree on Graham, but I'm HOPING he has an average combine!!

Did DBryant get an invite to the combine??
