What a busy week in Miami. In an effort to improve their return game, the Dolphins have gone shopping and saw something they liked in the window. Return specialist Josh Cribbs from the Cleveland Browns. Cribbs is an absolute game-changer on special teams but is not an upgrade in the receiving department. He leads the NFL in return yardage both on punts and kickoffs.
Now you may have read earlier that the Dolphins have sent a letter to the NFL asking if Matt Roth can be activated before the trade deadline. Could this be because they want to offer Roth as compensation for Cribbs? Cribbs comes with 3 years remaining on his contract at under $800k per season but is unhappy with his contract.
There would likely be a bidding war if Cribbs is indeed on the market, which according to two Cleveland sources, he is.
I fully expect the NFL to say "No" to Miami's request, but I don't understand why they can't activate Roth on Tuesday, which is the actual trade deadline.

Just guessing as to your last question, but maybe Cleveland needs some sort of proof he's ready before they'd have that conversation with Miami? Just speculating.
ReplyDeleteI'm a HUGE Josh Cribbs fan though. Got him in my FF league which gives points for PR and KR. He's the world's most reliable #3 FF WR in that format!
ReplyDeleteWell I'm not crazy about that trade.
ReplyDeleteI'm not high on trading Roth for Cribbs straight up. Roth is a top notch edge setting run defender and decent pass rusher, and Cribbs is a return man and average WR. I'd rather give up a mid round pick. Cribbs is not a starting player so let's not go crazy here.
ReplyDeleteWell as dumb as I like to think Mangini is, I don't think he's so dumb to
ReplyDeletetrade his best player (sad when your return specialist is your best player)
without knowing what he's getting in return. But are you saying they want
him activated so Mangini can send spies to tape the Dolphins practice? He
still wouldn't have access and would have to rely on minimal media
coverage/sparano's press conference to know what kind of shape Roth was in.
How do I get in a league like that? talk about easy points!
ReplyDeleteOf course he's a starting player. He's the starting kick and punt returner.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to say no to any trade at this point. I value my draft picks too highly to give them up and field position is not an issue with our ball control offense. We need defensive help!
ReplyDeleteI'll let Bill, Jeff and Tony do what's best for the team! 8-)
Not enough, Tin. He maybe plays 10 plays per game if he doesn't get on the field as a WR.
ReplyDeleteYes but if he's getting 150 yards a game in those ten plays? Imagine if we
ReplyDeletestarted every drive from the 35 yard line...
I understand Cribbs' value but not straight up for Roth. If we're moving in a different direction with Roth being that he's missed all of training camp, the preseason, the first 5 weeks and he's a FA next year, I understand that. I just don't think it's a great deal straight up. But I don't make those decisions. So if we do make the deal and Cribbs is awesome, maybe we forget about Roth and we're happy with the deal. We shall see.
ReplyDeleteWell right now Cribbs is worth more than Roth in trade value, regardless of
ReplyDeletewhat Roth has done in the past.
canamdolphin, we're not going to get significant defensive help at this time of the season in my opinion. We have a lot of young players in the secondary and that's where we need the most help. I don't see where that's coming from. I do agree with Tin that field position would be a nice upgrade. Just not Roth straight up for Cribbs.
ReplyDeleteI am interested in Cribbs but I'd rather keep Roth for this year because we may need him if we get some injuries and Porter has been fighting a hamstring the last few weeks. JT isn't getting any younger either so who knows.
I'd be willing to trade a 4th or 5th round pick for a top return man which Cribbs is. He also provides some depth at WR. He's a big dude (6-1 215) with speed and the trifecta likes those types of guys. We'll see what happens.
nah he's a lousy WR. He's the best returner in the league, but he's more
ReplyDeletelikely to play out of the wildcat in that 'slash' position than as a
receiver. He had the only good play in that horrible buffalo game working
that way...think he got about 30 yards.
Well I mean that's his position WR. Not saying he's going to give us much there as a WR. You're probably right, he probably could do some creative things out of the Wildcat because of his running skills.

ReplyDeleteNice! Was that Ricky? ;)

ReplyDeleteMaybe I will, how's the game going?
ReplyDeleteclose one so far 10-7 cincinnati
ReplyDeleteI like Cribbs ALOTTTTTT , but think a HEALTHY ROTH will be a much needed asset down the road!!
ReplyDelete(We should be able to secure him for a long-term future w'us fairly cheap @ this point),I would think...
MRoth opposite CWake should be an ever-improving force for an additional 4 yrs or so after JT/JP are gone !!!
JT,and JP will soon be soaking their teeth in efferdent by the 4th qtrs vs teams trying to keep OUR
(I considered using explosive but for now I'll go with) TIME CONSUMING O off the field...
MROTH is the guy we need to slow-down the run first teams come winter(though we only have 2 potential snow games),he's the only true runstopper we have @ his position ,and still has alot of upside,(IFFFF HEALTHY)!!
I'd love to get Cribbs for an o10 mid-rndr!!!
What'd Clev get for Braylon(a 3rd/soon to be 2nd,and a 5th),I'd think they could use an additional 4th to go along w'those pks.. Throw-in CAnderson or some other back-up (Moses) if a 4th doesn't cut it ..
I'd even CONSIDER giving them a 4th OR 5th AND Torbor for Cribbs and Trusnik...
( I remember hearing Trusniks name alot vs us for those gyz that wear grn in wk 17 last yr )!!
He's an ILB, 2 inches taller, same weight, and 3.5 yrs younger than Torbor,
(RT will be out of the league by the time Trusniks RT's current age 28)...
I'd like to get Cribbs, but not @ the expense of ROTH/"OUR" LB core !!!
Hell,IFFFFF we had another legit speed WR, TG could match Cribbs K return #s!!!
Didn't want Braylon(ME GUY),but after watching him on Mon nght,
he'd of been the perfect solution for risking TG back in the K returner position...
But AGAIN,like myself TriTuna doesn't like the (ME/DIVA) type guys!!
I hope a legit o10 TOP WR prospect falls as far as VONTAE did in 09!!
I like TG,but sure wish we could risk using him as a K returner!!!
I've wanted Cribbs for yrs!!!
I understand the Roth over Cribbs argument, but at the moment we need a
ReplyDeletespecial teams ace more than we need a SOLB.
Apparently, the NFL just told Miami they can activate Roth early on the 20th and then trade him before the 4pm deadline.
ReplyDeleteI'd trade Roth for Cribbs straight-up in a heartbeat. Roth is a solid player but Cribbs is a gamebreaker. And while the Fin's run defense has been good so far, they get poor field position on kickoffs and now present zero threat to score on punts and kickoffs. Of course, I don't see why the Browns trade such an exciting young player for so little. Unless money is the key factor? Is Cribbs already overpaid and wanting too much for the Browns (and maybe the Fins)?
Cribbs is not a high-priced player (makes the same as Roth) but he wants a
ReplyDeletenew contract, i.e. more money. I would too if I were the biggest scoring
threat on the team!
I agree with your analysis of Roth vs Cribbs. Sometimes we attribute stats
to players that they haven't created. Roth was a good solid player, but he
wasn't a sack machine or a dominant run-stopper by any means. Plus he
hasn't played or practiced since the 2008 playoffs. There's bound to be
some drop-off in ability due to inertia. Maybe I find it easier to
contemplate trading him since I gave up on him during the pre-season. I
thought we all did.
Another thing to consider, IF Miami were to trade for Cribbs, he would be an
instant contributor, lining up in the wildcat, and returning both punts and
kickoffs (20-plus touches a game). Imagine a world where you don't have to
watch Bess run back a punt for 2 yards. Or one where Pat White doesn't get
put in the game in the middle of a game-on-the-line drive for a couple of
plays. If we got Cribbs, Pat White would probably be done for the year, and
I don't have a problem with that, he makes my stomach knot up when he's
taking a snap.
Scared the hell outta me too when he came in @ that pt of the game!!
ReplyDeleteOn that gain of a 1st down run of his,he just barily grabbed that ball by the tail as it went over his head,
could have been a 15 yrd loss,or loss of possesion, and definately a lost game!!
I THINK I'd be willing to trade him for Cribbs???
That's what I said during the game chat! First he almost fumbled, then he
ReplyDeletegot his feet entangled and almost fell over. The guy is dangerous with the
ball, alright....lol
