Henne vs Sanchez

This kind of got me off on the wrong foot this morning. In ESPN's AFC East blog, Tim Graham shows his Jets homerism by ranking Mark Sanchez above Chad Henne. I made the comment on his blog under my ESPN moniker 'ferment78' that Henne clearly outperformed the 5th overall pick last season:

"I think you forget that Sanchez was the 5th overall pick and Day 1 starter and Henne had to come in during the season after Pennington was snapped in half. Henne had a better win percentage, touchdown/int ratio, more ypg, more yards for the season, and a much higher completion percentage of 60.8% to Sanchez's 53.8%."

But, you know, blogs are as blogs do, I immediately got bashed by a Jets fan who didn't see any unfairness is comparing Sanchez's playoff stats to Henne's non-existent playoff stats. My favorite comment: "I'm sure Sanchez will make it back to the AFC championship before Henne, I'd bet my house on that!"

Well, in today's housing market, that's one good way to get rid of your mortgage payment...

One last thing in this whole 'who's better' debate - Henne went on Rachel Ray and won a cooking competition with a grilled steak dinner - Sanchez's contribution to the culinary world is buying /eating a hot dog from a stadium vendor in the middle of a game. The End.

1. I believe that we'll have the luxury to comparing Henne to Sanchez for many years. And I believe that Henne will outperform Sanchez statistically about every year. The NY media will always try to throw love to Sanchez as long as the Jets are winning. But if they start to lose, I think Sanchez will get some blame. I believe that Henne can help win games for Miami whereas Sanchez will only ever be a "game-manager." I would say the Fins have a definite advantage at QB for years to come. Whether or not we will win more playoff games than the Jets is up in the air for the next few years though.

2. The Jets are in that win now mode which is a losing formula in the NFL... I was talking about team chemistry in the last blog and it is nearly impossible to build by trying to bring in FAs to fill gaps. When a team is built together they are more likely to stay together when they lose a few games and things aren't going well. They are in it together. Mark me on this, when the Jets start losing things are going to get ugly in NY.

I believe Henne just scratched the surface last year. I think he takes a big step this year.

"Graham joined ESPN.com in 2008 after covering the Miami Dolphins for the Palm Beach Post. He previously spent eight years at the Buffalo News, where he was an award-winning NHL and boxing writer. The Baldwin-Wallace College grad also has worked for the Las Vegas Sun and Boston Herald."

Tin,

Based on Tim Graham's bio I don't see why he would be showing Sanchez any "homerism." Regardless of what he Graham says defenses (ours included) were giving him WAY too much time to throw the ball last year. Although it was pretty clear to me that Wake was our most effective pass rusher last year & should have been used more, we definitely need to find another guy who can generate pressure from the weak-side. Now maybe that guy is on our roster or maybe we need to sign a veteran like Ellis who can be a situational player but this is by my biggest concern on this defense right now. Up next would be a starting a FS but I think that will sort itself out internally.

I love our depth at ILB & DE & even without Fergie between Starks, Soliai, Baker, & Ivey our NT situation looks okay.

Patrick,

I believe "chemistry" in professional sports is overrated & outdated. With so many new players being brought in every year through FA & the draft, winning cures all ills. Gone are the days of the same guys going into battle every year until they retire. If the Jets struggle at some point in the season & I believe that they will, they will have in-fighting like any other team. If Sanchez is a franchise QB then they'll be fine. Personally, I'm not sold on him yet & prefer Henne.

Tim,

I couldn't agree more. Considering the recievers he had to work with last year, he actually exceeded my expectations. Too many dropped passes by too many players....Let's see what he looks like with Brandon Marshall.

10. WHP, I expect more of you - why would you make assumptions about a person's favorite sports team based on a 3 line bio?

But if you are going to make assumptions, look at the fact that he worked in Buffalo, Boston, and Miami - hmm maybe he's been smart and chosen not to cover the Jets because they're 'his team'?

Psu,

This is a one year deal for the Jets. Tannenbaum is rolling the dice & when they fail to win a SB they're going to have too many players who are getting old & not enough youth. Trading away all of those picks WILL catch up with them especially with all of the players who are going into the last year of their deals.

Tin,

I was just throwing it out there. I thought maybe you knew something about Graham that I didn't. I honestly don't know who Graham likes or dislikes. Maybe he has Mark Sanchez posters over his bed??? Who the hell knows??? However, he's the ONE guy from ESPN that I do like. Do I think he's wrong about the Jets & Sanchez??? Absolutely but in fairness he did say that if he was asked after the regular season he would've picked Henne. In the playoffs the Jets continued to put a major emphasis on running the ball BUT Sanchez did cut down on his turnovers & he didn't try to force anything. Does that make him a better QB than Henne??? No way. It just meant that Sanchez didn't blow it.

13. I always got the vibe he was more in favor of the Dolphins than the Jets, or at least unbiast based on his posts. I mean just yesterday he put up the "Are Jet Fans Delusional?" post... >.>

14. I think Graham gets the tag of Dolphins-homer because he's the only ESPN guy who ever mentions them.

15. WHP do you have a short memory ? If so look back to the Wanny years when Miami was bringing in players to fill holes as the Jets are doing at this time, and giving away draft picks to do so. It didn't work did it ? NE has been bringing FAs in that don't fit in also.

Team Chemistry is a factor. A team can't have a cancer in the locker room. Yes the players can do their job even if there are problems on the team. But it most certainly effects the team on and off the field. Plus it pisses me off. :)

ReplyDelete
16. lol, now that's the truth... Brandon Marshall? "Oh that's interesting", Karlos Dansby? "They signed him!?" Your Mother's a prostitute? "QUICK open up the phone lines and get every person we can to give their opinion on it. Email us, don't worry we'll get to you, we have 4 hours of air time to talk about this and nothing else"

ReplyDelete
17. I don't think having great chemistry is necessary, but I do think there are cases where the reverse, having bad chemistry comes into play... like the Cowboys with T.O. where Romo started trying to appease him and everyone was taking sides till they finally imploded. Jets have some questionable dudes who could bring up the negative side of chemistry to where it actually still matters and they start pitting against each other.

Fang,

You seem to forget that Wannstadt was also an idiot, a choker, & a bad head coach. Rex Ryan may be an idiot but he's not a choker or he's not a bad coach.

BTW--I will take it to the grave that if Jay Fiedler didn't keep getting hurt or if we ever had a decent back-up QB instead Griese or Ray Lucas, we would've had more success. In particular was the season when we beat the Cowboys in Dallas on Thanksgiving after a short week & wound up finishing 10-6 & barely missed the playoffs.

Tin,

LOL!!! Graham is the lone renegade who even dares to mention that the Dolphins actually play in the AFC East.

It was nauseating enough on ESPN when it was the Patriots love fest year after year but it's clearly all about the Jets now. And now with Herm Edwards on board??? Absolute torture.

Tryptich,

T.O. is someone who created more than just bad chemistry, the guy is a locker room killer & a one man cancer. The Jets do have some sketchy guys like Holmes, Cromartie, & Edwards who might display bad attitudes but T.O. is in a league of his own. The next league is Ochocinco who should stick to running side by side with horses & racing Michael Phelps for his gold medals.

Check this out....Damn!!!

"Saints agreed to terms with RG Jahri Evans on a seven-year, $56.7 million contract.
Averaging $8.1 million annually, the deal makes Evans the richest guard in NFL history. A four-year starter without a single missed game in his career, Evans earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2009. According to Pro Football Focus' metrics, he was the league's best all-around guard and No. 2 run-blocking interior lineman, behind only Jets C Nick Mangold. The new contract puts Evans under control through his age-34 season. Guards have lengthy shelf lives, so it looks to be a worthwhile investment for both sides."

...what is it with you guys? ...you can't read the stats? ...you need glasses to see that Henne lacks both the accuracy and the touch to be labled a franchise QB? ...at the moment, he's a yeoman at best ...maybe he will get better and maybe he won't even be the starter out of camp ...Sparano hasn't exactly embraced him as he did Penne, eh ...granted he has stronger arm than Penne and we might have a receiver to take advantage of it this year ...but even a yeoman QB will look better when he's throwing to a franchise receiver ...imnsho, if Penne's arm is healed by camp, Henne is going to be playing 2nd fiddle again.

...now go on and vent, it suits you ...you must, I know ...but please, stop telling me how great a cook Henne is in the kitchen ...when he starts cooking on the field, I'll start believing the rap.

MIAMI -- A jury has awarded former Miami Dolphins wide receiver O.J. McDuffie $11.5 million in his lawsuit against a prominent physician over a career-ending toe injury.
The jurors returned the award Wednesday against Dr. John Uribe following a 2½-week trial. Uribe, a former Dolphins team doctor, called the decision a travesty and an appeal is likely.
McDuffie's attorneys called the damage award fair compensation for his lost earnings.
McDuffie sued for negligence and malpractice over treatment for the toe injury he originally suffered in 1999. He reached settlements with several other doctors.
McDuffie played 116 games for the Dolphins from 1993 to 2000. He had 415 receptions for 5,074 yards and 29 touchdowns and also returned two punts for TDs.

56. I don't think anyoned called Henne a franchise qb. But, I'm not sure how much he lacks the accuracy/touch to be one, considering his lackluster passing weapons... But since you said we need glasses to read the stats, what better stat to judge Accuracy/touch than completion percentage...

First years starting Completion percentage-
Tom Brady- 63.9%, Phillip Rivers- 61.7%, Matt Ryan- 61.1%, Chad Henne- 60.6%, Joe Flacco- 60%, Donovan Mcnabb- 58%, Peyton Manning- 56.7%, Drew Brees- 55.6%, Mark Sanchez- 53.8%

and that's with some of the most atrocious drops i've ever seen, no receiving te to lean on like many rookies tend to do and many of these had. o.O Wtf do you want from him, so he couldn't carry the team on his back down the stretch with no weapons, when the running game disappeared completely due to Ronnie being gone and Ricky falling apart... not to mention the invisible defense that did him no favors... Sure he still needs to grow but what, You want him to go Drew Brees throwing to ted ginn and in his first year starting? come on, don't be a hater.

57. he's from Ohio, thats for sure, but his homerism may be due to him writing predominantly about the team that is the big deal at the time and for now that's the Jets. I don't recall him being so Dolphin friendly after 2008's season tho.

64. As I understand it, hasn't Sanchez been laid up from some surgery? Henne's been throwing and working since our season ended. Not to mention he's been throwing to Marshall since he arrived. Sanchez has yet to work with his guys since last season ended.

This is setting up perfectly. Completely blown out of proportion expectations by the media and their own coach. A QB who has proven to be a decent game manager his rookie year but only after playing horribly and being muzzled to the manager role. This also after starting only 1 yr in college.

They will most likely sputter on offense out of the gates. Teams know his tendencies now and there isn't the running game they relied on, or the protection on the line.

And all this time he's had to catch up, he's been laid up.......

I'm thinking by game 4 they'll be running Sanchez out of town and all those personalities will clash beautifully!

69. Fiedler, JT, ZT, Wanny, Speilman, and Wayne would have all had @least one championship ring,
IFFFF not for Ricky's unscheduled retirement!!

We were THE FAVORED AFC represenative the day b/4 RW's walk!!

We spent however many 1st AND 2nd rnd pks to acquire his longterm services,
and then suddenly to fill the superstar void that Ricky left
Wanny/Speilman were forced to spend another bunch of early pks in DESPERATION
of maintaining that ""favored afc represenative"" status, IMHO !!!

When the StLouis RB(can't recall his name though it's on the tip of my tongue)for a 2nd or 3rd didn't work out, the regime thought well since we can't replace Ricky maybe we should try to better the QB position
w'Philly's 3rd stringer for a 2nd rnd pk, and so on,and so on !! PURE DESPERATION!!!

Overall, I think we spent @least two 1st, three 2nds, and two 3rds to acquire and then ATTEMPT to replace Ricky!!!

I LOVE RICKY, but he's the unequated biggest reason everybody hates that regime,
and why JT/ZT ,Fiedler the entire cast as well as we fans don't have a Championship!!

And yet most hate that regime and still adore (myself included) Ricky!!!
Even though the regime unsuccesfully tried their asses off till the bitter end,
while Ricky turned his back on all our hopes and dreams in favor of his own!!
He even said NO in his story,(when asked iff he missed his children)!!
I bet that still to this day WANNY misses his MIAMI DOLPHIN FAMILY!!

AGAIN, WANNY and his cast were ""favored AFC represenatives"" b/4 RW took his walk!!!

GO RICKY, GOFINS!!!

70. You're pretty close with that assement, but I can't help to think that it was still Wanny that ran RW off. He handed the ball to him way to many times in his 2 previous seasons and beat the hell out of him. I guess Wanny figured that's all he had on offense I don't know. What ever the reason I still feel RW went away because he was beat up and didn't want to take the pounding like that for another year.

After that we got a case of the stupids. Not only wasting draft picks but also filling the cap space with huge contracts. I could see the money for JT and ZT, but Chris Chambers ?? He may have been our best reciever at that time but he wasn't worth the amount of money he was getting from us. Man, I could have ran the team better than that and I'm a loon !!!

...as for who called Henne a franchise QB? ...take a look around, join in the game chats, look in the mirror, his fan boys are rampant here ...and maybe they are right ...I just don't see anything to support it as yet ...and plenty to not support it ...just a lot of excuses and finger pointing at everyone else 'cause y'all want him to be something he isn't ...reminds me a lot of the last election, it does
...and I most especially don't think his cooking skills are going to translate too well onto the football field 8-)

79. Okay, while the Dolphin in me could never put Sanchez ahead of Henne, the guy made a good point... "While Sanchez got better as games became more meaningful down the stretch, Henne struggled. Heading into Week 15, the Dolphins had a wonderful shot at securing a wild-card berth. They finished with three straight losses. Henne threw three touchdowns and five interceptions."

Unfortunately this has been my fear with Henne since we drafted him. Great QBs rise to the occasion in big games and we haven't seen that from Henne yet. I'm not saying it's not going to happen but the body of work suggests that he has a tendency to make poor decisions in critical moments. Now before anyones goes open loop, I believe the defense had more to do with our late season losses than Henne, but it still concerns me until he proves otherwise.

80. FOURTH QUARTER COMEBACKS: Henne has three fourth-quarter or overtime comeback victories this year (and in his career), with three at home and none on the road ... His three fourth quarter comebacks came on Dec. 6th vs. New England, Nov. 15, 2009 vs. Tampa Bay and on Oct. 12, 2009 vs. N.Y. Jets.
CONSECUTIVE COMPLETIONS: Henne completed 17 straight passes on Dec. 13th at Jacksonville, which is tied for the most consecutive completions overall in team history and the most consecutive completions by a Dolphin in a single game.

So while Sanchez is falling apart in clutch time, Henne is using his guts and talent.

83. Tin
I just noticed, you have done 87 blogs this year and 407 last, bringing you to 494, only 6 to go to 500. Wow. Just wondered if you are planning on giving money away, throwing a (tinshaker) cocktail party or will it just be the usual tequila slammers and a lap-dancing club after the 500th?
But seriously, your milestone blog should be a little special shouldn't it? Or do you already have a cunning plan up your sleeve?

ReplyDelete
84. uk,

i did some research:

if tin gets his 500th blog before may 18th he will be the youngest dolphin blogger ever to reach 500. not only that, but, he will be the youngest blogger to reach 500 and he did it with utilizing two gay pics of sanchez and 3 manboobs shots of potential draft pick. and just to show off, all that will be done while fixing 249,895 sandwiches at the same time. way to go tin.

ReplyDelete
85. Lol
He's also the "bloggingest" high school safety (free or strong - can't remember?) who didn't quite make it to the college level. You know, you have a point on those topless shots ...... Tin says he has a wife and a son, but we've never seen any cheerleader shots on here? NLC or otherwise? Although I seem to remember a brief flirtation with the lingerie league? I think the least we deserve on #500 is an animated sandwich shooter firing footlongs at us?

ReplyDelete
86. agree, well either a sandwich shooter or some sandwiched hooters

ReplyDelete
87. I guess I need to remind Tinshaker that he promised me pre draft that he would post a scantily clad pic of our first pick, if I am remembering this correctly....maybe it could be my new avi? That would be Odrick....Maybe he's saving that for the 500 post extravaganza!!!

ReplyDelete
88. Herd,
Maybe Tin will do better than that and send you a calendar with all of the picks scantily clad ala JT's attempt at male modeling. LOL

ReplyDelete
89. Sanchez & Nathan's Coney Island Dogs = Love match

ReplyDelete
90. yeah, that would be it, odrick dressed all commando style (not that commando style, herd) ala arnold in commando with a sandwich shooter strapped to him as he is blowing up a phathead of brady

ReplyDelete
91. Herd

I can see the interest that the Ladies would have, of seeing Odrick in a Speedo. I feel when Tin posts that photo, he also includes a web site where I can purchase a Barf Bag.

92. I suggest usage of this picture of Odrick...

93. I hate stats but I couldn't resist this. I'm a realist or I try to be. These stats seem to point out that dolphin fans have plenty to look forward to IF Henne can develop some touch on the ball. Which from what I have seen over many years of fandom usually comes with time. With the TE play of last year and no reliable deep threat. I think Henne did pretty good I don't see him going backwards this year. Not only that but the Dolphins were relying on Chad the last 4 or 5 games. Sanchez was not put in that situation. I don't think the Jets know what they have yet at QB. I think the Dolphins have more of an idea what Henne will be this year.

94. to be honest I hadn't noticed. I don't think it's that much of a milestone
to be honest and I'm not into patting myself on the back - but maybe I will
do something shocking, like suddenly start covering the Vikings instead....

ReplyDelete
95. That's not true, I did cover the cheerleader competition last year.

ReplyDelete
96. herdfan - I think the odds of Jared Odrick pulling a Sanchez are pretty much
zero.

ReplyDelete
97. lets hope the only pulling ordrick does of sanches is when he is pulling him down and planting his mug in the infield dirt of (whatever the stadium is called now).

ReplyDelete
98. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOO! please don't tease like that

ReplyDelete
99. Do we expect a sophmore slump from Sanchez this year? Henne will almost certainly be better with better receiving targets. But who really cares what a Jet fan thinks anyway? Hell, our castoff WR Ginn torched his team! That's pathetic!

I'm feeling good about our LBs. I'm even intrigued with guys like Folsom, McCoy, Spitler and Johnston.

If I had to pick our LBs on the 53 now they would be -
OLB/DE Wake
OLB Anderson
OLB Moses
OLB Misi
LB Dansby
ILB Crowder
ILB Dobbins
ILB Edds

5 or 6 of those guys will play special teams. We don't have the established veterans like JT and Porter who don't play ST anymore. Dansby and Crowder probably won't but that's only 2 as opposed to 4 last year including Ayodele.

Torbor could be on his way out with his salary unless he steps up big time.

ReplyDelete
103. think we'll take 9 in... and the 9th will be McCoy.

ReplyDelete
104. Tim The EnchanterMay 6, 2010 at 7:44 PM

I don't know who 9 is yet. It depends on the talent on the roster. We could get away with 8 LBs.

ReplyDelete
105. ...agree on all but Anderson ...I think both he and Torbor lose their spots unless none of the other rookie LBs can play ST as well as fill in at LB ...Anderson makes too many critical penalties ...Torbor makes too much money compared to his contribution ...among our current crew I think Crowder could be at risk as well if his injury lingers ...but then I think about what happens to our run defense every time Crowder isn't on the field ...posit they'll keep 8 on the roster and 2 on the ps ...the new DC is going to need a lot of DL to keep the rotation going in his style of attacking defense that depends on fresh bodies ...if there is a choice between an extra LB or DL, I think he'll take the DL.

ReplyDelete
106. Still think we're gonna take 9, we took 9 last year and we had much less competition/potential at the position... I don't see any reason to switch from the 9 LB/7 DL we took into the start of the season last year. Last year our dline rotation was very heavy... Snaps: Starks-730, Langford-581, Merling-376, Soliai-370, Mcdaniel-315, Ferguson-286... I don't see why we would need a more intensive rotation to the point that 7 wouldn't be okay. Plus we have Ferguson coming into play later in the year if any injuries happened.

Lb's(9): Dansby, Crowder, Wake, Misi, Edds, Anderson, Dobbins, McCoy, Moses

DL(7): Starks, Odrick, Langford, Merling, Soliai, Mcdaniel, Ikaika Alama-Francis

Of course it's all dependent on how training camp goes and that's just an early thought... Maybe Baker instead of Ikaika.

107. Tim The EnchanterMay 7, 2010 at 7:08 AM

The main reason I have Anderson in the mix is due to his experience in the 3-4, his size and speed and he plays ST. I'm aware of his dumb penalties but I'm not sure that alone gets him cut.

New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez (knee) was able to run on a treadmill for the first time since undergoing surgery, two people familiar with the situation confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini. Sanchez told a friend that it "went well and I can eat as many hot dogs as I want." The NFL Network first reported Sanchez being able to run.

Do you honestly expect me to offended if you think NY is a sewage dump??? There are parts of NY & every other state in this country for that matter that are total sh#tholes. As long as I don't live in one it doesn't bother me.

120. I've lived in about 30 different locations in my life, and 90% of them were in the 'good area' but I had plenty of occasion to go around or through the 'dumpy areas'. Every city has a ghetto and every county has a closed sewage/asbestos dump and every state has a 'boonies'.

If I were Jersey residents, I would be very happy that everyone just generalizes on the turnpikes and swamps, because as a Nation, nay, as a Planet, people say far worse about Florida - specifically about its people. I'd rather someone insult my 'garden' than my family.

If I could be an OLB for one play in the NFL, all I'd want to do is pound Mark Sanchez face into the ground for a ten yard loss & tell Rex Ryan "San-chise my a$$!!!"

I don't want to just beat them this year, I want to embarrass them.
