Tin Bits - Monday, 5/24/10 - UPDATED

• The # Dolphins 1st round draft pick, Jared Odrick has fired his agent. According to Bryan McIntyre, "Odrick had been represented by Denver-based agent Peter Schaffer's All-Pro Sports & Entertainment. When the 6-5, 301-pound defensive end from Penn State fired Schaffer, and who he has chosen to represent him, is unknown at this time.

As the 28th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Odrick will likely receive a five-year contract worth between $13 to $15 million dollars, including over $7 million in guarantees."

• The Dolphins have traded G, Justin Smiley to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Details of the deal are unknown at this time.
• The Dolphins have signed Corey Proctor, a 6'4 inch, 311 lb guard formerly of the Dallas Cowboys.
• I found it strange that the Buffalo Bills, with all their quarterback issues of the past few years, hired a quarterbacks coach who is 59 years old and has never coached in the NFL before. George Cortez has 30 years experience in the CFL and College ranks, but will now face the challenge of trying to mold a viable starter out of Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Brian Brohm, and Levi Brown. My money is on Brohm.
• The Jets haven't stopped working on their roster, and are now reportedly interested in signing a 6'5", 238 lbs kick returner. Greg Inglis is an Australian rugby standout, but the idea of converting a rugby player into someone who's actually going to be getting hit or delivering hits with pads and a helmet on are a bit far-fetched. Why would you sign someone who has never played American Football before, to play in the NFL? It's a bit like those people who go to a Sushi restaurant and order a Cheeseburger....
• The Patriots are currently loaded at linebacker, though they could probably still use another pass-rushing specialist, and I can't help but feel that someone like Tyrone McKenzie, the South Florida alum they drafted last year (who got a freak injury on the final day of rookie camp and missed the entire season) could be fighting an uphill battle to make the roster. McKenzie is my favorite Bull LB ever, so it goes without saying I'd love for him to be waived and end up on our team instead of on theirs, but the 6' 2 1/2", 248 lb inside linebacker will start making a name for himself in the NFL this season no matter who he plays for.
• The Dolphins return to OTAs today after a four-day weekend. So far the roster is still intact at 84. The Dolphins Pro Shop has shut down 90% of sales/stock which means new stock is about to be released. Not that it matters, because NFLshop.com always has more options anyway.

1. The Jets said they're considering playing the rugby guy at LB or Kick Returner... How many other LB's are kick returners... seriously? I'd be surprised if McKenzie is cut, unless he's not healthy. I haven't really considered the Pats stacked at LB... They have Mayo and Banta-Cain and they drafted Spikes. I don't know of anyone else that would be considered above-average on their team...

I'm just glad the Dolphins aren't where the Bills are at. They're looking more and more like 3-13/4-12 every day.

Are the Pats really loaded at LB or do they just have a lot of them? Outside of Mayo they seem very average.

ReplyDelete
3. The questions is, with a top ten pick in Mayo, a 2nd rounder in Spikes, a proven player in Woods, etc, where does McKenzie fit? McKenzie is a Mike LB, are they going to shift Mayo in order to get McKenzie on the field? I don't think they will.

Tim,

The Patriots still might be average at LB since Spikes & Cunningham haven't done a damn thing yet & Pierre Woods is a mediocre player at best. When Tully Banta Cain is your 2nd best LB well then I'd say you have a problem there. I think it's fascinating with the amount of draft picks the Patriots have had over the last few years they still haven't drafted a solid pass rushing OLB, a decent DE, or a productive RB.

A proven player in Woods? He's their version of Charlie Anderson for us except Anderson has proven to be a better pass rusher.

We'll see about Spikes, I'm not sure he's fast enough to be anything more than a thumper on early downs and in short yardage and goal line situations. Be sure that teams are going to test him in coverage early on and run plays that force him to run in space.

Wait a second....How long ago did Ronnie Brown get hurt??? Did he have surgery on that foot or is he still waiting for it to heal on its own????

This is from February.....WTF???

"Many remember that Miami Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown was on his way to an outstanding, career-best season before suffering a season-ending foot injury in week 10 against Tampa Bay. Brown's lisfranc injury put his status for the start of next season in jeopardy, but it sounds like he is recovering well. Brown told the Palm Beach Post that it's been 11 weeks since his surgery and that he has finally gotten out of the walking boot, but he is still not allowed to run. "I don't know how this things works," Brown said. "It was a weight-bearing injury, so I couldn't put any weight on it for awhile. But now I'm out here walking around and everything feels pretty good. Everything is going real well."

8. AFC East today, huh, Tin! Alright, Belichik is the best coach in the division, even though he is still searching for a defense. The Jets SUCK ALL DAY and with our new DC, JT can't help them at all with what Miami does on defense! Buffalo has one of our last year coaches, but again, he can't prepare the Bills for our D, and they will be a door mat!
We need to sweep our division to get into the playoffs. The schedule is screwy, our division is 3 of the first 4 games and 3 of the last 4 games.

11. That's why its important that we start strong and finish strong. If we're going to have any slumps it needs to be in the middle of the season not at the bookends. Preferably no slumps at all of course.

Tim,

Agreed on Woods. I think he's a mediocre player. I'm no sold on Spikes or Cunningham for that matter either. I've said this before last year & I'll say it again, the Patriots are definitely losing (or have already lost) their luster.

I know a lot of things have to come together (our youth & inexperince on defesnse is my biggest concern) for us to have a good season but I don't fear the Patriots any longer & I think the Jets & their QB are highly overrated.

I can't believe the season doesn't start for three & a half months....I'm dying to see what our rookies look like on game day. And Dansby. And Marshall.

ReplyDelete
16. I don't think it's fair to compare Woods to Anderson - one can defend the run and no pass rush, the other can pass rush and not defend the run, one had 71 tackles the last two years whilst the other had 44. One is a special teams ace and the other is a special ed ace who can't stop committing penalties.

And I wouldn't be so excited to put down Anderson via Woods, because it seems Anderson is currently penciled in to start at WOLB which would indicate that the Pats actually have a better OLB corp than us.

ReplyDelete
20. We don't have to sweep the division to make the playoffs, but its a lot easier to make the playoffs if you win the division. 4-2 doesn't guarantee a division win - weren't we 4-2 last year? 6-0 or 5-1 is more like it.

ReplyDelete
21. We Have PlaymakersMay 24, 2010 at 10:07 AM

Tin,

4-2 in the division is solid but you do have to win more than 3 out of the other 10 right??? LOL!!!

If we go 4-2 in the division--which sounds realistic--especially the way the schedule is put together this year, than my guess is that we'll be a pretty good football team. 5-1 would probably mean that we are one of the best teams in the AFC & I'm not ready to take that leap of faith.

LMAO!!! This would actually help the cause. Can you imagine our WR corps with Marshall, Bess, Hartline, Camarillo, & Crayton??? I don't know if we'd be as good as the Saints (Colston, Meachem, Henderson, etc.) but the depth would be pretty outstanding.

"The Dolphins were reportedly recently contacted about their potential interest in Patrick Crayton.
It makes sense that the Cowboys would gauge Miami's interest considering the coaching staff's history with Crayton, but the Fins were "noncommittal" when asked about the player. Crayton is a slot receiver with some punt return value. The Dolphins have a better, cheaper version of him in Davone Bess."

25. Break the season up into quarters. We already know that the 1st and the 4th will decide the AFC East.

26. One thing though is Anderson has never really been given a shot to start with JP here and then JT. I guess you could say in 2008 he was with Roth so that's fair. But Woods has been mediocre playing more often.

I'm not trying to pump up Anderson because I'm not a big fan but let's see if he can finally step up. If not he'll be replaced next year for sure.

38. I'm not big on worrying about the schedule. For me it's all about how we match up against the team we play the week we play them. Last year we didn't match up defensively to anyone. Offensively we were pretty good against nearly everyone, and that should improve. Even though I don't think Ronnie will be at full speed until about week 4 - 6.

What concerns me more than anything is the slow transgression the coaching staff has in figuring out what the team does best in the early part of the season. That has been a problem for the past 2 years, and that trend must be reversed.

ReplyDelete
39. Frankly, i am really happy that we got anything for Smiley. His shoulder problems were way over-publicized and we didn't help our trade prospects by telegraphing our desire to dump him. We were probably a few weeks from having to cut him, so getting anything is good at this point. A fourth would be shocking.

41. Smiley traded, now proctor signed...it's a decent day. I don't know if Proctor can win a starting job but he definitely adds more depth to an already deep Oline bench.

I also want to say that it really is too bad about Smiley's shoulder, he was a really solid player and a leader. Proctor for Smiley may not be an upgrade in talent but i like our philosphy of getting rid of perenially hurt players (except for Ronnie, but he better make it through this season).

Tim,

That dude made catches!!! Same with McDuffie. Granted they had the best pure passer to ever play IMO the game but they were both so clutch. Peyton Manning is surgical & is right up there too but Marino was groundbreaking & before the NFL went completely pass happy. The similarities to me is that both QB's can completely pick a team apart by themselves & not even have to hand the ball off. In addition, the game is/was never over when either QB got the ball back.

62. Hello all, glad I finally found Tin's site.

Marino made clutch plays that won. Manning is more like a robot. I liked Elway's clutch plays too but c'mon, rooting for Marino was almost like when you were a school-kid in love. So 'friggin exciting..all those 4th qtrs.

Anyway, I'm glad they're attacking O-Line personnal. I never realized how much the cap, contract & overall system humstrung the management from plugging in the players they wanted.

This is all in a perspective that the Tuna's greatest weakness...picking a WR has been solved.
That cash has been spent on BM so other guys have to take a pay cut. Sorry men, that's the way the pigskin bounces.

I think we start slow & suffer the young/new D this year but really have an awesome December.

Lastly, I had doubts about Nolan when he was hired too. But, man did I scream at the lack of double coverage on Randy Moss last year. My brother screamed at Jimmy Johnson back ion the '98 draft for passing on Randy Moss...I will never, ever forget that day. We've been watching Moss for years. You must bracket Moss vertically & it's been done & Moss has been shut down. Don't know what Paul P. was thinking. I'll take dinks & dunks from their TE all day before I want to see Moss kill us over the top. My bet is that Nolan finds some smoke & mirrors plus we hopefully get a 4 man front that can put Brady & Sans-nadz in the dirt.

64. The one thing Justin Smiley brought to the table that can't be overlooked is his toughness and his leadership on the OL. For those reasons I was a little surprised when the Dolphins basically didn't allow him to compete for a job. Either the shoulder was not going to ever be right or, as I had speculated in a previous blog, there is a rift between him and the coaching staff.

I get the distinct impression Sparano was not happy with the player leadership on this team. I think JT and JP did not buy in and I'm thinking Smiley did not buy in either. Part of these changes like cutting JP, blowing off JT and telling Smiley to not show up are intentional attempts to show the other players on this team, if they don't buy in, they will be gone. I my opinion Sparano is a very loyal guy, very straight forward but he requires the same in return. What he is attempting to build is a team that acts as one force on the same page at all times. He had to put up with some players his first couple years simply because the team had no depth, but as they have built the roster we can see that he is now addressing the players who he feels place themselves higher than the team. Roth is another example of a guy who placed himself above the team.

If Sparano has showed us anything over the last two years it is that he values team over all else and will not hesitate to eliminate players who do not buy in. After Nick the dick-tator and Cam failing foward fast we finally have a coach who has an absolute plan and sticks with it even at the cost of letting a player go who clearly still have some gas left in the tank or a coaching partner who has not lived up to Sparanos expectations. When the players see that even the coaches are not treated differently than they know they have to perform. I have to admit, I really like Tony Sparano and I think if we stay healthy this team going to be really good this year and is being build for the long run.

ReplyDelete
65. ...wecome to the Tony Sparano school of continuous improvement ...just when it looked like the OL competition was set, they bring in Proctor to really shake things up ...I love it.

...there just has to be more to the Smiley story (much as in the Roth story) ...what we know doesn't make any sense ...something went on behind the scenes between Smiley and the trifecta.

...the Jets will be the toughest AFC East competition this year, despite Sanchez ...much as I loved JT, I hate the thought of him on a Ryan coached defense playing against us ...we won't have Ginn's family this year.

...and never count any Brady led team out of any game with or w/o a defense.

...despite Marshal we're not going to have a balanced offense ...this team is built to run ...60/40 run/pass ratio ...and it won't really matter if Brown is healthy or not ...if the OL is working, we have at least 4 backs capable of getting it done ...w/o Brown we may not have the WC but otherwise, we're going to run it come hell or high water.

...but Marshal will do two critical things for us ...they won't be able to stack the run with him on the field ...which makes our run game even more effective ...and Marshal will make the catches that Ginn didn't last year.

...defensively, who knows?

...Nolan will do some things that P didn't ...but it all depends on the talent he has to use ...other than Dansby, I don't see any great change in the talent level ...especially at FS ...and we're placing a huge bet on one guy becoming a pro bowler at OLB, a guy who has yet to show he can do anything more than rush the passer ...maybe that pays off, maybe it doesn't ...but you have to admit that its anything but a sure bet.

...overall, I think the improvements on offense will win a few games we lost last year ...and the run offense will minimize the defensive weaknesses more than last year ...so we likely make the playoffs.

67. I couldn't agree more, although I think it's more of a trifecta thing than a Sparano deal in regards to loyalty and a team first mentality. This has been an issue for longer than I want to remember. The team was loaded with those players for years, and it takes some time to weed through the problems.

I agree with everything except your thoughts on the D. I'm expecting some breakdowns at times with new players and new coach/scheme, but I think our D will come around to be quite impressive. One thing Denver didn't have is the DL that we have. I think our depth will prove to be the key late in games and late in the season. I guess I'm more optimistic about Wake, but you are right, we haven't seen enough to date to know for sure.

69. I'd consider 60-40, 55-45, pretty balanced in comparison to most every FIN team since the 70's!!!

FANTASTIC that a SUPERSTAR WR make's the run game all that much better,
while also catapulting the pass game into the top 10 of the league from 20th!!

BM's good for @least 900, which is how far out of the top 10 we were in 09,
and HENNE's going to be farrr more effective than last yr,(even if we hadn't acquired BM)!!
W'out all the drops & turnovers in 09 we'd of likely made-up 500 or so of that 900 last yr, IMHO!!!

TOP 10 all around O in o10, GOFINS!!

I thought the same as you about being a run first team. Then I went did a stat check and found that Miami passed more than ran last year. I still think we will try to stay with a balanced attack though. One thing for sure there were things they didn't like about the o-line. They shipped Smiley out, moved Thomas to the other side of the line, and have Berger running with the first team in OTAs something was wrong up front in the middle of the line. Which proves to me that we the fans along with the Media have no idea what we are looking at when we are evauluating talent. I know that is true about myself, so I don't waste my time going over youtube clips.

I don't see us making the playoffs yet again because of the uncertainty on the defensive side of the ball. Unless like so many times I have seen in the past that the speed and size of this defense can make up for weeknesses that we saw last year.

Every time I want to jump on the bandwagon and say yea baby we are on our way !!! Reality jumps in and says take another look which leads me to writing and thinking as I do. I still don't have the confidence in this team at this time, to say we are a playoff team. I will say that very soon we will see a very good team on the field that can beat anyone they play. I just don't see the improvement happening early enough this year to make the playoffs.

71. Good stuff Lemmus... It seems to me they are looking to get away from the running game and move to a 50 - 50 split. I still contend the wildcat telegraphs itself and can be easily defended when teams prepare for it. I can still see it being used but I think we will gradually get away from it or use it from the base personnel package so it is not as obvious. That's hard because Ricky and Ronnie need to be in the game at the same time and that typically doesn't happen unless we're running the wildcat.

The difference on defense will be young legs... Porter and JT had lost a step but were savy enough to make it work. Wake is all about speed, but he likes to play with his hand on the ground, which is probably the reason Anderson is slated to play 1st and 2nd down. I would have to see a lot of improvement from Wake as a stand-up LB to think he could play everydown. But what I think will surprise teams this year is our DBs. Our secondary will take a quantum leap as those rookies get another training camp and Will Allen returns as a FS. Mark me on this one, what people are thinking as a weakness is going to turn out to be a great unit.

72. I don't see us making the playoffs yet again because of the uncertainty on the defensive side of the ball.

We don't know what the defense will do. Last year we did, but we got rid of that former NFL tight ends coach that was posing as a DC and have a bona fide DC and former HC with NFL pedigree making the calls this year! I'm optimistic about the chemistry of this team following last year's key injuries and the general lack-luster performance of defensive "team leaders".

ReplyDelete
73. I agree with the general arguments presented. If all of you remember, the coaching staff was very disappointed about the depth of leadership on the team. They kept saying how they lost so many of their leaders as the season went on. I'm betting the frustration of a) losing players to injury, but b) losing players in the sense of buying into their system was actually part of it. Its interesting to see how many team captains are back and how many are just thrown away (except for Smiley if he passes his physical).

Looks like an interesting year indeed. When is the next OTA?

ReplyDelete
74. As far as i'm concerned the Smiley situation makes perfect sense... he was highly paid, hasn't finished a 16 game season the past 3 years. Uncapped year, multiple years left on the contract, normally you probably just keep him, but since it's uncapped you cut him because now is the time you can do it without any repercussions. Typically once the season starts you WANT continuity along the line, having a player who can't finish a season is a hinderance when you're trying to create a dominant line.

Tryptich,

As a fan it makes perfect sense. Of course. However, I'm glad I'm not the one paying the bills. If you're the owner, you take a pretty big loss with that signing. Other than Starks, Thigpen, & McDaniel I'm scratching my head to see if any of the FA's that Parcells has signed or traded (for a significant amount of money) have panned out. Hopefully Dansby & Marshall break the cycle in a big way but for the most part I say stick to the draft.

1) Smiley
2) Grove (actually competing to be with a starter after the money we paid this guy???)
3) Wilson
4) Wilford
5) Torbor
6) Ayodele (part of a trade)
7) Fasano (part of a trade)
8) Eric Green

The repercussions are the $9 Million dollars we paid this in guaranteed money. That's a lot of money to tie up for a guy that started 24 games in two years.

We rushed 509 times. We are a run first team but we fell behind too many times and the 545 passing attempts stat is skewed because of that. We need less pass attempts this year and more yards per attempt.

24 of a possible 32. It is what it is. I'm not sure why everyone is so tied up about this.

Instead of working out or rehabbing, Smiley was hunting and the trifecta didn't like that. They cut their losses and moved on. It happens all the time for all sorts of reasons.

80. I Think the coach should rethink not haveing injured players on the side line at game time to help the players along. To me having two extra eyes on the play and be able to give input from a starter is huge for young players.

85. I believe IFFF healthy WAllen will be one of the best nickle's in the league for a few yrs(not so @ FS),
and having him alongside the youngster CBs to coach'em-up in every critical situation
can only expediate their growth process toward probowl level type player's!!
(WA & VD can switch-up @ a moment's notice a time or two),
and possibly confuse a racing the clock O @ strategic point's of the game!!

Having a coach on the field @ every level of the field might help turn this D around overnight,
(DEFINATELY CAN'T HURT!!)
I think WAllen would be a farr bigger assett @ the nickle/cb/coaching position!! JMHO!! :-D

86. ...I still think that if a real FS doesn't jump out at Nolan early, that they will move Sean Smith to the position by the middle of camp ...remember that a lot of draft sheets had him projected at that position last year ...we have a lot of young talent at CB, not to mention Will Allen, and none of that projected at FS looks like a cornerstone to build a backfield on.

...I don't think they will move him willingly but only if one of the present candidates don't step up.

...and while I'm throwing curve balls, I also think that we'll possibly see PW in the backfield a lot more this year, especially if Brown goes sour on us ...not as a QB but as an option back who is a threat to both run and pass ...they tried to rebuild his throwing style last year and it looked like it didn't work (though he only had 5 pass attempts) ...but as an option back, he'd be free of the constraints an under center QB faces ...don't forget that he was a great option back at WVU and remains a real threat with the ball in his hands ...just not under center ...and despite all the PW haters, the one obvious thing is that the coaching staff believed in him enough to keep inserting him in the game ...they evidently saw something in his ability that the fans didn't.

87. Lemmus, child please! That little boy will get killed!!! Everytime I saw White in a game he looked like he was playing hooky from high school...

kv, I don't think they would want to move Smith from the CB spot until he proves he cannot handle the position. As a young guy, they don't want to mess with what he's learning and if he progresses at the corner then you have the guy who matches up perfectly with the big receivers who have givin us trouble in the past. While Vontae Davis is probably more gifted, Smith could be special because at 6'3" he plays with the fluidity of a much smaller man.

They will give all the youngsters a chance to take the FS spot before moving Allen there, but in the end they will play the 4 best guys because while Allen may hurt you some in run defense, he will not give up the huge stupid plays in the passing game that led Wilson out the door.

Now the Sun says the reports that Smiley's shoulder is shot was "exaggerated." That's what I said!!!

"Justin Smiley passed his physical Tuesday, completing the Jaguars trade with the Dolphins.
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel suggested that reports of Smiley's shoulder being "shot" were exaggerated, so it's not really a shock that he passed his physical. The 28-year-old will likely slot in at left guard for the Jags, pushing Uche Nwaneri to center. Declining veteran Brad Meester may be out of job. Smiley agreed to restructure the five-year, $25M deal he signed with Miami in 2008."

Tim,

You can't deny that we've shelled out a lot of money to a number of players that have not panned out. You are correct that this happens all the time & in fact MOST high priced FA's hardly ever live up to their contracts. As I said I'm hoping that this is not the case with Dansby. Marshall was actually a trade & the way his contract is structured protects us in case he goes insane again.

91. NEVER suggested moving SSmith to FS!!!!
(APPEARS that my point's weren't throughly read)???

I don't think we want our two oldest, slowest, leaders as the last line of defense, behind rather than alongside
the youngsters where WA can help VD,SS & YB can help whatever youngster takes the FS spot manipulate the critical play's that might be coming @ them!!!
I want an established veteran leader/on field coach @ every level of the field to help speed the recognition abilities of the youngsters!!

92. ...that "little boy" ran over and through every opponent he ever played ...hes as big or bigger than many a successful NFL back.

...its not a matter of SS not handling the CB slot, I don't think that's ever been in question ...but they have other viable options at CB and may not have such at FS ...I don't think its a "probability" but its more than a "possibility" imnsho of course.

94. IFFFFF all of the current FS prospect's totally flop,
that could be a possibility,(don't see it happening, but it could)..

@least in that scenario, I'd still have my preferred wishes of having established veteran's
alonside yet profesceint youngsters, rather than having the two most experienced (YB & WA) @ safety,
and out of direct eye & verbal contact w'those that still need direction!!!

Though we'd have to go real deep for the nickle corner, where I'd personally luv to see WAllen,
but he'd have to play the #1 WR if SSmith's @ FS!!

Let's hope w'all our heart's that two of the current FS's excel!!

I like the way our DB depth sets-up right now,
(IFFF CClemon's and/or RJones become legit FS's,we're set for yrs down the road)!!
I believe that WA & YBs eventual replacement's are already on the team,
and have a few yrs to get ready to step in w'out missing a beat!!!
