From Out Of The Ashes...

8 days ago Miami was out of contention. Done for the year. In rebuilding mode. General Manager-itis had set in. Today, with a win, the Dolphins will be one game out of first place.

Thanks to the worst game of the week, nay, season, the Bills fell to 1-4. The Patriots and Broncos traded turnovers and punts throughout the fourth quarter until they stumbled into over-time. The Broncos won the coin toss. The Pats are 3-2 now. If the Dolphins defeat the Jets, they'll be 2-3 heading into the bye week with the Jets tied at 3-2 with the Pats. During the bye week, the Jets host the Bills and the Patriots host the Titans.

So tonight's game isn't just an early season rivalry game - there is something on the line here.

Go Phins!

P.S. My prediction came true and the Dolphins are now the top ranked rush defense in the league after Baltimore got absolutely slaughtered on the ground by the Bengals. They gave up their first 100 yard performance by a running back in 40 games! The Steelers gave up 110 yards to the Lions, knocking them out of contention also. The MAGIC NUMBER for the Dolphins to stay as numero uno is 111 yards. If they give up no more than 111, they will retain the top ranking. Live Chat at 8pm EST/5pm PST.

1. I posted this this morning on yesterday's blog. Just want to see what you guys think.

Did any of you guys watch the N.E. Denver game last night? Did you see the "Wild Horses" formation? Man, I like the idea of lining up in the WC and then putting the QB in motion, either to stop under center or keep on moving accross as a distraction. I expecially like the idea against the Jet's D. The way they bring have 4 linemen, 4 LB, 2 corners and one S. You trot out the WC formation, wait for the Jet's to line up in there modified 46 and then put henne or PW in motion have them stop under center and run a pass play. That should help the WC. What do you guys think?

2. I actually missed that play...but I think at this point we should keep
things simple for both Henne and PW. Maybe a specially designed Thigpen
play?

ReplyDelete
3. Well, I think that will be the progression. Thigpen will be the #2 by the Oct. 25th Saints game. IMNSHO. Denver actually ran it like 3 or 4 times that I saw. (tuned in late) but the anouncers were talking about it like they have run it several times.

4. tin, you doing to chatroom again for tonights game

ReplyDelete
5. Well it's like comparing apples and oranges (Denver undefeated/KC winless)
but the Chiefs run all kinds of weird plays like this. What do they call it
- the pistol? I believe they started using it when Thigpen became the
starter there.

It's going to be fun watching the game tonight knowing we still have a chance to stay in this thing with a win. Like I said in another post, it might have been on the SS, regardless of what happens tonight my interest in this season won't be ruined. If we drop to 1-4 our playoff hopes are likely gone but we have so many young players to root for and watch develop. This team is on the rise regardless of their record this year.

I was listening to Boomer and Carton this morning and they're already planning on the Jets being 7-1. Boomer says the Wildcat won't have success against 'Rex Ryan's' defense because of what he did against it with Baltimore last year. Well that was Baltimore and everyone is forgetting that most of our running game comes out of our base formation. So everyone can keep focusing on the 7 or 8 Wildcat plays while we smash them in the mouth with the other 30-35 running plays. :-D

ReplyDelete
8. Exactly Knight!! Every talking head on TV has been saying the same thing. "Rex Ryan" will stop the wild cat and the jets will win" Last time I checked that Fat tub of Goo doesn't PLAY for the jets so he won't be stopping anything. IF the Jet's D can stop the WC it's only 10% of what we do. Besides - Grove, Thomas and Smiley weren't in the games we played against B-more last year so we'll have to see what happens when our A team is on the feild.

Also, If we can come up some twists (like the one I posted above) the wild cat can still burn their asses!

I can't wait until tonight!! Tomorrow is going to be a rough day (win or lose) at work and my phone voice will probably be shot! GO DOLPHINS!

(Remember Lil' Mark Giglio says the next 5 are ours! LOL)

ReplyDelete
9. Please excuse my spelling errors today. I'm too tired and lazy to check. LOL

ReplyDelete
10. thus my time spent posting here rather than working!!

ReplyDelete
11. To tell the truth Tin, I haven't seen one snap of a KC game this year. I couldn't tell you what they run. I just like the idea the Broncos came up with (or who ever came up with. This is a copy cat league after all) of having the QB slide back under center after showing the WC. I think it could losen up the D.

ReplyDelete
12. that would mean we have to 'actually' read what you write.

ReplyDelete
13. Did anyone listen to the Mike Berardino radio appearance on that NY radio
station? it was actually pretty good, but what stood out to me was that the
NY guy was blissfully unaware of the Wildcat production we've had this year,
and Berardino actually pulled out numbers like he was Sparano. To this day
the talking heads keep saying how the wildcat won't work. It's funny then
how it not only keeps working but is actually being used MORE (Knight, I
think we are up in double digits per game now), but is producing more yards
per carry now as compared to last year, despite us breaking a lot of big
plays out of it last year, and not this year.
To me it's just the same as any other 'alternative' formation in that it
puts the ball in the hands of your best player.

ReplyDelete
14. That reminds me a bit of college teams in the early 90s that used to line up
off the ball until the defense was set and then get up and run over to the
ball. I think Nebraska used to do it?

ReplyDelete
15. The Knight who says Ni!October 12, 2009 at 8:38 AM

That's another thing, the uninformed and paid pundits forget about. We didn't have Jake Grove last year and Donald Thomas played in one game last year. Smiley missed 6 or 7 games last year I forget? This is not the same OL as last year and Jake Long isn't a rookie this year. So we shall see what the big scary Jets defense does. ;)

ReplyDelete
16. The Knight who says Ni!October 12, 2009 at 8:44 AM

The ypca is up from last year but I think we only ran it 9 times for 58 yards 6.4 in the Bills game.

Once again, the Wildcat is not trickery or a gimmick. It's one of the oldest formations in football and it's all based on how well you block it. I'm amazed at how ignorant people are about the Wildcat, especially those paid to tell us what's going on.

ReplyDelete
17. The Knight who says Ni!October 12, 2009 at 8:45 AM

"To me it's just the same as any other 'alternative' formation in that it puts the ball in the hands of your best player."

You're exactly right.

ReplyDelete
18. I think the more production out of the cat can be attributed to our beefed up interior line, like I said in the post above. Rex's Ravens didn't go against Thomas, Grove & Smiley.

I would LOVE to see the WC work against the Jet's D without any twists just like it has the last 4 games against our other opponents. (of course then we'll have to hear from the talking heads about us having to use gimmicks to win again.) but then again who cares what the talking heads are saying as long as we WIN!!

ReplyDelete
19. The Knight who says Ni!October 12, 2009 at 8:52 AM

More proof nobody reads what you say. LOL

Agreed.

ReplyDelete
21. The Knight who says Ni!October 12, 2009 at 8:58 AM

The only reason anyone is talking about the Wildcat is because it works. If it didn't work it would be a thing of the past and we wouldn't use it anymore. LOL

I really hope we come out passing just to throw the Jets off guard. I'm talking throwing the ball deep at least once and maybe another one in the 15-20 range.

ReplyDelete
22. I think we willpass more in this game to take advantage of the Jets banged
up secondary.

ReplyDelete
23. Sure hope so. Tin you are straight right about that boring ass cleveland buffalo game. This is the downside to fantasy football. You're hurting because of byes and pick up a 1 Week Waiver Wire Wonder from Cleveland, and you end up watching the worlds most boring professional football game to see him catch one whole pass
LOL@Me!

I'm in a regular pool too. Last week I actually picked every game (you read it right), but of course this week I reverted to the mean.

Soooo....2 Fantasy Teams, 2 losses. One pool contest, one loss. I'm really putting a lot of eggs into the dolphins basket tonight! Go fins!

ReplyDelete
24. The Knight who says Ni!October 12, 2009 at 9:19 AM

You deserve what you get if you pick up a Cleveland player. ;)

That was a brutal game. I'm glad I didn't watch it. LOL

ReplyDelete
25. The Knight who says Ni!October 12, 2009 at 9:21 AM

That's another thing, Boomer Esiason said this is as healthy as the Jets have been all year. I was like what? Have you seen their injury report? LOL

ReplyDelete
26. Jahndoh I feel for you, but I actually had TWO Cleveland players on my FF
team! Also both picked them up just for this week. Neither one performed
even to par for me. And if that wasn't bad enough, due to the Bye, I had to
pick up a free agent kicker, went with the Jacksonville guy who didn't
attempt a single kick all game.
I trail my opponent by 38 points heading into tonight's game with only Ted
Ginn left to save me.

ReplyDelete
27. The Knight who says Ni!October 12, 2009 at 9:30 AM

I hope you win your fantasy game. ;)

I need 2 points from Ronnie Brown for the win.

ReplyDelete
28. Might as well pop the champagne bottle now.
The 38 points may seem unreachable, but the last time I had this bad of an
outing was before the previous Monday game, and I was down by even more
points and Ginn managed to get me within a few points of a tie. I think he
DID actually end up with 38 points in that game.

ReplyDelete
29. or hears what you write LOL

ReplyDelete
30. i thought in fantasy you had to pick NFL players, how could you even get some one from cleveland.

ReplyDelete
31. i already have the win even without ronnie. so i will pull for tin to win with a 272 yard 3td performance by teddy

ReplyDelete
32. LOL@ FFR!! oh, my sides hurt! Why not a 350 yd 4 td game? ROFLMAO!

ReplyDelete
33. BUT! If it were to happen, I would be the first crying from the roof tops that I KNEW HE COULD DO IT! LOL

Let's just hope he plays well, gets some first downs, moves the chains and MAYBE takes one in for a TD. That would make me happy.

ReplyDelete
34. LOL!!!

Good luck with that one Tin! I trail by 70 with just Miami's D and Dustin Keller (I know I know, but you ARE the one who pointed out to me how TEs always have their way with us!). I'm hoping that Keller catches like 15 balls with no TDs and lots of yardage and about 5 fumbles that the defense returns for TDs.

It could happen :)

ReplyDelete
35. how the heck are you down by 70 points, oh nevermind, thats right you took a cleveland player. lol.

ReplyDelete
36. Well actually I get a point for every ten yards and 6 for a TD, so something
like this could work for me:
2 TDs, 40 yds rushing, 220 yards receiving
-or-
3 TDs, 40 yds rushing, 160 yds receiving.
Of course, it would help if he took a couple of kicks back for scores...

ReplyDelete
37. funny thing is Rob, for 2 consecutive weeks I was projected to be highest score in the league (12 teams) and it looks like I'll lose them both. Last week I was 2nd highest score in the league and lost to the top point getter (which is also a cash prize of course!) by .3!!!!!!! This week it's not so close, but you'd think that McNabb, Mendenhall MJD Reggie Wayne, Kevin Walter (ppr league), Massaquaoi (who only had 14 targets the week prior!), Keller, Rackers and the Miami D would be good enough to win from time to time, but alas, I've only a dolphin win to keep me interested in football tonight :)

ReplyDelete
38. I was going to say! All you need is for him to return two KR for TDs, that would be like 30pts right there( Right?) Then if he catches 10 passes for 8ydc average your there! No worries. Bank it. LOL

ReplyDelete
39. Oh BTW, did anyone notice the performance by Miles Austin yesterday? This
is the guy I wanted to sign in the off-season to be our #1 WR, but no one
wanted to give up the 2nd round draft pick he was tendered at. Question is,
was the price too much considereing we used that 2nd round pick on Pat
White?
http://www.wikio.com/video/1806460

ReplyDelete
40. I like the part about the 5 fumbles returned for TD's. You would crush with that. (both on Keller's yds & miami's D's TD's. LOL

ReplyDelete
41. or one TD pass for 20yds!

ReplyDelete
42. "I'm hoping that Keller catches like 15 balls with no TDs and lots of
yardage and about 5 fumbles that the defense returns for TDs."
Brilliant strategy!

ReplyDelete
43. I had Massaquoi too, and the running back...Harrison? The two of them
combined for 300 yards the week earlier but only 35 this week!

ReplyDelete
44. I don't think I get any points for return yards (that would be way too
easy), so I'd only get 12 points.

ReplyDelete

I saw his stats last night 10-250 2 TD. Everyone will pick him up in fantasy this week and he'll never come close to that again. I've seen it happen many times.

I got 8-210 and 2 TD from Roddy White yesterday.

ReplyDelete
48. damn jahn, how are you down by 70. mcnabb had a great day. trust me it was so wonderful, not only watching my fantasy qb rack up the points but he did it against the bucs

49. The Knight who says Ni!October 12, 2009 at 10:39 AM

Does anyone else sense a calm amongst a lot of us fans heading into tonight's game? I don't sense much worry, but actually confidence which is unusual, especially playing the Jets and us being 1-3. I'm enjoying it because I feel the same way.

ReplyDelete
50. FFR, did you see the article in the Tribune about how the Bulls can 'own'
Tampa with a win on Thursday, but that the team is being tacky about
self-promotion and that the game isn't the biggest game in school history
and that they won't win anyway. LOL It was a complete mess of an article.

ReplyDelete
51. tin, you say that like something in the Tribune wouldnt be a mess. and yes on talk ready all morning they were saying if the bulls win, they will be owning the town.

ReplyDelete
52. total headshaker. I'm gonna drop Massaq and pick up Austin now, the Waiver priority is the downside to having a loser fantasy team.

...of course now the knight has jinxed Austin too ;)

Thanks for that Knight!!!

ReplyDelete
53. and by "downside" I of course mean upside!

ReplyDelete
54. Other than the Rays, what other argument is there? The Bucs stink, and no
one cares about the Lightning.

ReplyDelete
55. sounds like we have the same team

ReplyDelete
56. He had rothlisberger, portis, Brandon Marshall, Wes Welker, Visanthe Shancoe and the Ravens D which scored big with the Ed Reed pick 6. It's the story of my life!

It's cool though, I HAVE to make the playoffs. My roster includes both McNabb AND Rivers, MJD, Mendenhall, and Ronnie Brown, Reggie Wayne (though obviously I'm grasping for other WRs since Kevin Walters has produced exactly ONCE this year., Vernon Davis and Dustin Keller, and Dolphins and Green Bay D.

I have NO idea how I can be 1-4 but here I am!

ReplyDelete
57. if the lightening put a decent product on the ice, they get good crowds. for some reason lightening games attract a lot of talent (not that it does me any good), i think it is they get to get all dolled up and sit indoors.

ReplyDelete
58. I'm not calm, but on the other hand I hadn't given up on the season either. Cautiously optimistic.

On a personal note, I am also excited about my beloved Thundering Herd. We might just end up with a winning season and be bowl eligible this year. I probably shouldn't have said that, we will be doomed now, especially going into this weekend's game with the hated 'Eers. I'll be going up there for the game this weekend, the only Herd supporter in our group. I need new friends!

62. The Knight who says Ni!October 12, 2009 at 11:20 AM

I was 0-3, now I'm 1-3 needing 2 points from Ronnie to get to 2-3. So far my fantasy team has been parallel with the Dolphins this season. Not that I've been getting killed or anything, just unlucky with the schedule. Other guys have been winning scoring the same amount of points.

78. What's up, Tin! I listened to the Broncos/Patriots game on AM radio yesterday as I was driving to Amarillo. Heard about Goodman missing a key tackle and that Holliday played very well! Gave a big fist pump when the Broncos won and the driver behind me must've thought it was directed at him! The Bills are done. Only business left is busting Ryan's Jets right in the chops!

ReplyDelete
79. Rock,

That was a great game. One of the best I've seen all season. I watched it from start to finish & they worked out of the "Wildhorses" formation a LOT!!! Orton was nearly perfect when he threw out of that formation. Great job by Denver's O-line yesterday giving Orton all the time he needed. As I've said before when anyone decent starting QB gets that kind of time like, he can look like a All-Pro.

Very impressed with Royal & Marshall looked like T.O. in his prime. If Moreno can stay healthy & hold on to the ball better, he'll be a very good RB.

ReplyDelete
80. You're driving from Canada to Texas?
The Goodman tackle wasn't as bad as the announcers made it out to be. He
wasn't that close to the guy and didn't have a good angle on the guy but he
made a diving effort anyway. It's not like he got run over or anything.
The back (think it was Maroney) made a big run outside but they didn't score
so it was moot.

ReplyDelete
81. Marshall DID look very good in that game.

ReplyDelete
82. Canam,

It's absolutely true! Big time whiff in a critical stretch of the game. Goodman looked like Gibril Wilson on that play. He was in position but he didn't rap up the RB. I can't remember which RB it was--either Maroney or Morris???

Holliday is still a very solid player. He made a huge play by sacking Brady & forcing a fumble that Dumerville recovered. I've got to hand it to the Broncos & McDaniels for getting it done. BTW--Getting Brian Dawkins was a hell of a signing. The guy might me 34 or 35 but he can still play at a very high level.

ReplyDelete
83. Except he dropped an easy INT in the end zone and he's all banged up.

ReplyDelete
84. Tins,

Are you kidding??? He was in position to make the tackle he just didn't rap him up.

I honestly love your blog but you couldn't see that on your gigantic plasma??? WTF were you looking at???

ReplyDelete
85. Tins,

He was all over the field yesterday making tackles plus he's an excellent leader. I wish we had a safety that played with that kind of intensity.

ReplyDelete
86. it's not a fookin plasma!
on my gigantic LED he didn't have the angle at all, because the runner just
did a bounce to the outside and was gone.

ReplyDelete
87. maybe next year we'll draft one. I've always liked Dawkins as a player, but
he's too old for us.

ReplyDelete
88. The Knight who says Ni!October 12, 2009 at 1:54 PM

Dawkins was the best FS in the game for quite a few years.

ReplyDelete
89. A win tonight would be beautiful & it would certainly keep us in contention but after the bye week we have the Saints @ home, the Jets in NY, & then the Pats in Foxboro??? That's a killer 3 game stretch. There's no doubt that if we make the playoffs this season we'll prove to even the most vehement detractors that we're a pretty damn good football team.

Just look at the first half of the seaon's schedule??? It's BRUTAL but the 2nd half doesn't look NEARLY tough as it did before the season. The Panthers??? The Titans??? Talk about teams that have disappointed!!! Jesus Christ....

ReplyDelete
90. LOL @ Tins! Okay, okay on your gigantic LED!!! Sor--ry.

IMO--That's a tackle that could've& should've been made. Hopefully my favorite rookie Vontae would've gotten it done.

ReplyDelete
91. The Knight who says Ni!October 12, 2009 at 2:13 PM

Not to put too much pressure on Henne but he will be the key in beating good teams so we can stay in the playoff hunt. We already know we can match up physically with teams. Sure there are mismatches here and there, but when you can play in the trenches you can win any game. If Henne can make some special throws we can pull off some upsets and tough road wins. If not, we're gonna fall short.

ReplyDelete
92. Knight,

There's no question about it. Dawkins is a heck of a player. If Philly would've won that SB, maybe a Hall of Famer. I'm actually surprised that Steve Atwater never received consideration. There are very few safeties in the Hall of Fame. Because of the SB's I think Rodney Harrison will get in. Great player but I prefer Dawkins.

ReplyDelete
93. Tins,

What does that really mean??? He's too old for us but not too old for the Broncos???

Isn't Taylor too old for us or what about Ricky for that matter??? If a player can help you win I don't think it matters. I'd rather have older players that win than younger players that lose. I watched Dawkins & Holliday play yesterday (for a team that I wouldn't have been surprised if they started 0-5 this season) & they can still play & help a team win games.

I'd still be complaining about Goodman if Smith & Davis weren't playing as well as they are. Watching these rookies play so far I don't think we lost that much but it was a pretty risky decision to roll the dice with the draft & Eric Green. Parcells & Co. just happened to draft the right guys. It's extremely rare to hit on two very good CB's in one draft.

94. Knight,

I think he's ready for the pressure (4 year starter at Michigan) b/c I think he's going to be the real deal. I usually reserve judgment until I've seen a QB start more than one game but I really trust our scouts & the job we have done the past two seasons with the draft.

They watched a TON of tape & did a tremendous amount of homework before they drafted Jake Long. During that process, whether they wanted to or not, they saw a lot of Henne too. I don't think it's a coincidence that we drafted both guys who played together at Michigan. Before they took Long our scouts must have REALLY looked at Ryan & Flacco backwards & forwards as well so therefore I won't be surprised if Henne eventualy turns out to be as good as those guys.

Not sure if he'll get to that level this year since I don't think our line is as good as either as the Falcons or the Ravens. But who knows??? Maybe they'll surprise me. Also in the case of Ryan he has better weapons than Henne has to work with in the passing game. Put Henne behind that line & give him Roddy White, Tony Gonzalez, & Jenkins to throw the ball to. Henne needs the same help any good QB needs. You give a guy like Henne the time to throw & he's going to make plays.

hee-hee! No, I drove from Canada to Santa Fe! I'll be here til November 8 with my wife, who's in her final month of hypnotherapy training. I'll be working on my golf game, eating mexican food and drinking negra modelo!

Niagara area?
They really love their hypnotherapy in that area. Do you ever watch Penn
and Teller's Bullsh**? They did an episode on it. Maybe your wife's
teacher is the same person from the show!
I don't approve of the golf but I enjoy an ice cold negra modelo anytime I
can.

I don't think Super Bowl wins have anything to do with HOF. Marino?

The trifecta didn't think there was a whole lot of difference between Henne, Ryan and Flacco. People can say what they want, but until Henne has a body of work to go by, you can't say he's not on the same level. It takes time with young QBs. Eli Manning was being questioned and the fans and media were real close to giving up on him a couple of years ago, even during their Super Bowl season. How about now? LOL

The weapons Henne has to work with is a big difference. We don't have a whole lot of established WRs or TEs so it's going to take some time. But by next season Henne is going to be a different QB as is the entire team.
