New Practice Squadder and Other News (UPDATED @ 11:51AM)

I can't guarantee I can pull this off all season, but I'm trying to track the practice squad as I would the 53 man roster.

The Dolphins have deleted newly signed LB, KC Asiodu and it's reported they've replaced him with defensive lineman, Derrick Jones, out of Grand Valley State, class of 2007.   He was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Pittsburgh Steelers.  He has appeared in one NFL game, with the Falcons in 2007, and spent time on the Titans and Bills practice squads in 2008.  He was cut by Buffalo during final roster cuts on  September 5th.  He is 6'4" 315lbs.

The Miami Dolphins practice squadders are:  JD Folsom (LB), Kory Sperry (TE), Andrew Hartline (OL), Will Billingsley (CB), James Robinson (WR), Ryan Baker (DE), Julius Pruit (WR) and Derrick Jones (DE).

Here's a little article on him trying to make it in the NFL from a couple of years ago.

  1. Damn! Just typed a whole thing on JR and it dissappeared!

Short version: I heard an interview last weekend w/ Seau. They asked when he was going to be rejoining the Pats. He said: "Not yet. It's too soon. This old body can get you 4 games, not 14"

I think the Pats are getting desperate on Defense.

  2. Well, this isn't the first time the Pats have done this....they do it every
    year don't they?

  3. Tin - please would you clarify s/thing for me - is Billingsley on our practice squad or the Gridiron Gang's ps? ;)

  4. I don't get that reference....is that a movie?

  5. Braylon Edwards to the Jets???  WTF!  When the hell did this happen???  This is what happens when I try & work, I miss everything!

I could be totally off-base but I think the Jets made a bad decision.  I'm not a fan of Edwards both as a player or a person.  He had one very good season but he's definitely one of the more overrated players.  First off he's injury prone & he dropped a lot of passes last year.

I'd make the deal straight up for Ginn since I'm not a COMPLETE idiot but the Jets gave up Stuckey who was pretty decent & improving, this kid Trusnik who was a promising young D-lineman, & draft picks???  They must really think we suck if they drop their No. 2 WR mid-week before a game.  So much for them caring about chemistry.  I guess they think that between Cotchery & Keller are enough to beat us since Edwards can't do much if he doesn't know the offense.

Is Derrick Jones a NT? He has the size.

WHP, most of us don't think Edwards is all that but Jet fans are creaming in their pants the same way they did with Sanchez until this past Sunday. Once Edwards disappoints them they'll all dry up. LOL

  8. Knight, do the math....Atlanta 07, Tenn 08, Buffalo 09. What position do
    you think he played?

  9. Yes - it was a gridiron team formed in prison!

DT so with us he'd be a possible NT.

  11. lol....I guess I missed that one. Who did they get to play against?

  12. If memory serves, the warders had a team and made the in-mates form a team to beat up on, but guess what ...... the in-mates won!

  13. Ryan is following a blueprint for success and his building project is going exactly according to plan. Trouble is, he's got the plans for a rest room and we're building a mansion. I know where I'd rather live.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Well, let's think about this for a second...does this Mansion have indoor
    plumbing?

  15. BTW--I apologize.  Trusnik is a LB not a D-lineman.  My mistake.

  16. You are NOT forgiven! Off with his head!!

  17. Not yet - Rome wasn't built in a day. We can use the Jet's rest room, it will be repossessed soon!

  18. UK,

If Henne is the real deal then I'm in complete agreement with you.  If not then this franchise will be back in the out house.

Parcells & Co. have drafted & brought in a lot of good, young players but you can't build a house without a foundation.  A young starting QB that doesn't turn the ball over, makes the throws he needs to make, & knows how to be a leader is BY FAR the biggest part of that foundation.

Like so many "clairvoyant" fans (Ha!!!),  I can't question the decision to draft Long ahead of Ryan until I see how Henne turns out & even then I probably still can't.  No one knows for sure until whether a player will excel at the next level until that player shows that he can.  You can bring in all the experts you want.  You just don't know!!!  Most people who watched JaMarcus Russell at LSU thought he would be an elite QB, everyone thought Bush was going to be a HR, & some experts doubted Adrian Peterson.  No one knows for sure.  I repeat NO ONE!!!

But......It would have been a dream come true if we took Nicks. I thought Hakeem Nicks was the 2nd best WR in the draft & he would've looked great in a Dolphins uniform!!!  After that I wanted (& thought for sure) Clay Matthews Jr. was the right pick.  Vontae Davis???  The truth is that I never watched him play a game in college so I was not really sure what to think.  After watching Davis play so far, I think we were very lucky to get him so far down in the first round.  I think he's going to be a heck of a player.  Excellent value with Davis.

  19. Fair enough.....

  20. Yeah they do. It's not surprising that they did it, it's surprising they're doing it ALREADY. They'll take his good 4 games and hope to get healthy before the playoff push I guess...

  21. WHP - I don't watch college games so I can't speak with any authority whatsoever, but I do understand absolutely that it is not an exact science. At almost every position, it's a crap-shoot trying to project exactly how a player will project. There are pleasant and unpleasant surprises everywhere, at every position and on every team. I remember the hype on Gallery saying he was a "can't fail" pick, but, whilst I haven't seen him play much, he hasn't lived up to expectations from what I understand.
People also love to put on those 20x20 goggles after a season or two and point out all the stars drafted after their team picked a "bust", but that's all hot air and wasted effort. If it didn't happen, just move on.
We have drafted who we've drafted. We have to try to develop the players we have, not throw them under a bus. I read this comment on the SS about TGJ - "This guy is a nothing more than a track star playing football, and I want him gone after this season". Maybe if Henne throws a pick-6, they'll be calling for him to be cut too next week and get Thigpen in as our next saviour (do these people not realise how many QBs have been through that revolving door post-Marino?)
My take on Henne so far is this. He has a strong arm, he's played in a big college system with lots of pressure and handled it, he's played behing Penny and seen how one of the best NFL QBs behaves, prepares, overcomes adveristy and leads. He's being guided well by the coaches, he has a good running game to help him settle in and he hasn't panicked yet. All plusses. Sparano likes him. We haven't seen what he's made of when the game is on the line and we need a 4tjh Q comeback yet and we haven't seen what his upside is either, but SO FAR, he looks at least serviceable and if Dilfer can win a SB, it isn't necessary to have a franchise QB to lead your team ..... it just helps an awful lot - ask the Pats. lol.

  22. well, the dominating running game will get its test this monday!! A rex ryan defense will test any running game and we will se if the fins are ligit or not soon enough. is our offensive line jelling? or are they jello? are our running backs well seasoned? or out of date? i cant wait to seen how this thing works out....

The Saints ran on the Jets pretty well so we should be able to as well.

Derrick Jones sounds like a guy who's worth a look. If he doesn't pan out, it won't be from a lack of work ethic. He's impressed a lot of people as a football player and person.

Like 'james in va' I can't wait to see how this thing plays out. I for one am an eternal optimist. I see the move for Edwards as a sign that Ryan (now exposed by the Saints) must cover a huge hole. Sure it is being lauded as an excellent move by several analyst but the fact remains that a huge hole exists.

Our team on the other hand is moving forward on very solid footing with a strong running game and we will know how strong by 11:00pm EST on Monday and a well genned in QB. Our passing game at this point can only get better. We too have holes but our philosophy it seems is coaching our own guys too cover it. In other words the coaches feel that the talent is there and there is no need to go on the trading block.

This is reminiscent of the '08 Jets management moving in Brett Favre as the one missing link. Maybe I'm old fashioned and maybe things have changed but building a team through the draft with consistency and teamwork beats the crap out of random attempts at superstardom or whatever you want to call it. I liked that earlier analogy about the Jets building a bathroom while we're working on a Mansion. That was right on the money.
