!TIN BITS TO THE EXTREME!

Well, despite the BYE week for half the teams in the NFL, today has been crammed with news and quite a bit of it is related to the Dolphins, so here we go:
• The Cleveland Browns are once again shopping Brady Quinn. Now is your chance, Ginn haters. Ginn for Quinn straight-up? Personally, I'd go Pat White for Quinn straight up.
• The Dolphins are working out a receiver that possesses every quality you look for in a wide-receiver, but some qualities you hope not to find in an NFL player, i.e. can't stay out of trouble with the law, injury issues, etc. The Dolphins are among several teams suddenly interested in former Jaguars receiver (no, not Wilford), Matt Jones. The Jets were also interested, and may still be due to Jerricho Cotchery and Brad Smith both suffering injuries in last night's loss to your Miami Dolphins.
• It turns out that Patriots left tackle, and all-around A-hole, Matt Light, did not seriously injure his knee, despite the fact he was on the ground for a long time then couldn't put any weight on it as he was carried to the sideline during the Denver game. The MRI results showed 'no significant ligament damage'. It's unknown when he'll return to action.
• Click HERE at 2pm Eastern to view Coach Sparano's 'Day After' press conference.
• Patrick Cobbs has a torn ACL and will be placed on season ending Injured Reserve.
• Ricky Williams had a mild strain in his ankle and is expected to be fine.
• The injury to Ricky Williams must be more serious than first thought because the Dolphins have signed Kory Sheets off of the 49ers practice squad according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. Once again this causes an issue with getting Matt Roth back on the roster. I do like Kory Sheets as a runner though. He's got playmaker skills, but I don't know if he'll still be on the roster come the New Orleans game.

1. I think Thigpen is a better developmental QB than Quinn is at this point. After seeing what a big arm can do for an offense last night, I also have little interest in another QB who is "accurate on the short/intermediate stuff" but doesn't have "an elite arm".

Trading Ginn now would be just silly IMHO. He finally has a QB who can utilize his (limited) skillset, and he wouldn't fetch much in compensation if he WERE traded.

Nice game last night, sorry I missed your chat Tin, but I'm certain you guys(and gals Herd!) had a great time.

2. Jahndoh, I was being facetious about Quinn. I don't see any role for him
here unless the Dolphins decided to give up on Pat White, which they don't
seem likely to do.
We had a great time. A woman showed us her slush puppies!

4. Matt Jones doesn't seem to meet the Trifecta character requirements from what I have heard, but .......

What a schedule we have to "look forward to". We get a bye to enjoy being 2-3 (with a 2-0 AFC East record), then we host the Saints, followed by the 2 toughest divisional games left, back-to-back, both on the road. Meanwhile, the Jets host the Bills and travel to Oakland. So in three weeks time, when we have the rematch in NJ, the Jets should be 5-2 and we'll be .....? (Fill in your preferred choice of 3-3 or 2-4) Then the Jets get a bye and we go to N.E. where they are coming off a bye. Brutal isn't the word. NE should take care of Tenn @ home and the Bucs at Wembley. In the best case scenario, we could win all three and be 5-3, likely tied with the Jets and Pats but holding the head-to-head tie-breaker over the Jets, with at worst a split with NE. Anything else has a kinda scary feel to it. Gulp. *DONT_KNOW*

5. Despite any character issues, they've shown interest in Jones (i remember
hearing similar talk last year) and there's no denying the talent to
paycheck ratio that we're talking about here. Plus you know how these
things work. As soon as he scores a touchdown, no one will remember he's a
drug addict. If he had a good team around him and can stay out of trouble
there's no reason he couldn't be a 80+ catch, 1000+ yard receiver. Sure we
have receivers that can do that now, but the difference is Jones is someone
you have to gameplan for. Not so much for Camarillo (no offense Greg).

6. We can't really worry about the other teams' schedule. Can't control how
that works out and its very unlikely we'd get a repeat of this past weekend
where everyone lost except for us. What we can do is win OUR games against
them. We can beat the Bills, we can beat the Jets, and eventually we'll
know if we can beat the Patriots. Personally I think the Jets are a better
team than the Patriots, but that whole Brady to Moss thing often trumps
their weaknesses. If we win those 6 games, we'd only have to win 3 or 4
other games to be in the playoff picture. But for now let's worry about
recovering from bumps and bruises and looking forward to New Orleans where
we should expect to face the Wildcat, or the Wild Possum or whatever they
call it there.

7. For those of you who do not back up your computers information I suggest you do so. Our DT computer was struck by lightning about 3 months ago and we lost the entire hard drive over the weekend. We had our harddrive backed to a disk and didn't lose a thing. If not everyhing would have been lost from taxes, photos, to Family history everything gone in an instint just like that. Make sure you guys take care of that stuff. Imagine the work lost if Tin lost his hard drive with no backup. He would have to redo this whole site and all it's history files would be lost.

Now nice to see an arm back in the offense even if it were for only one week, time will tell. How many think that
Ginn turns the corner now that Henne is the starter ? I'm not sold on either of them yet but I like what I see so far. Looks like Henne is a carbon copy of Pennington with an arm. Am I the only one who sees that ? Pennington definitly rubbed off on Henne in my eyes.

ReplyDelete
8. Technically I wouldn't lose anything that's published here unless Google got
struck by lightning but I hear they have seagulls with frickin laser beams
attached to their heads that can divert any incoming lightning strikes.
Thanks for the completely random but thoughtful advice though.
I agree with your assessment of Henne.

9. If it were me I'd probably do it, but if the Trifecta go public with the "high-character, right make-up" theme, they look a bit silly going back on it? Guess it won't be the first time or the last time though.

10. They've gone back on that a couple of times already, and like I said,
touchdowns = forgiveness.

If someone does cocaine that means he posseses every quality you wouldn't want in a human being??? If there's more off the field issues about Matt Jones than just him getting caught sniffing lines I honestly don't know about them. I can't condemn an athlete for doing something that I've done myself when I was younger. The only difference between him & millions of other people is that A) He got arrested for it & B) He's a professional athlete. People can change. In the world of professional sports Ricky Williams was a joke a few years ago & look at the kind of player he's become. I think what Michael Vick is far worse but I still think he deserved another chance. Donte Stallworth??? Now if I'm an owner or GM I don't know how I could look the other way. I don't think he's a bad guy but he killed someone & he deserves to be punished for that.

12. Tins,

So Jared Allen is an alcoholic & he had a few DWI's or DUI's but he stopped drinking & has been sober (at least he said he has) since. You're going to tell me you wouldn't want him on your team b/c of his past. If you look into a lot of other players pasts you're going to find skeletons in the closet. Just b/c you're a professional athlete doesn't mean you are a perfect or necessarily even a decent human being. Guys like Ronnie Brown are RARE!!!

ReplyDelete
13. Uk, Parcells loves Ricky & his favorite player of all time was L.T. Let's not completely fool ourselves. A lot of these players are not boyscouts.

ReplyDelete
14. Can someone explain to me how the Jets are able to afford all of these players??? They have a ton of high priced players like Jenkins, Pace, Faneca, D'Brickashaw, Sanchez (they had Favre last year), Bart Scott, now Braylon Edwards, etc....It seems like they have a higher salary cap than everyone else.

15. Isn't Matt Jones the one Joey Porter had a fight with? Or is that some other guy? In Vegas? And don't say what happens in Vegas...........................

16. WHP, it's not just that he likes to ride the white horse, it's that he likes
to ride the white horse even though it's ended his career, knowing that he
will get tested, and that he got caught a second time less than a year
later. And this isn't someone who's history shows a pattern of drug abuse.
He obviously developed this problem after coming to the NFL. Before that he
was honor roll, star QB, idolized by his hometown, etc.
I know people can change, and personally, I know that the drugs make people
think they can get away with it, but until he realizes he can't get away
with it and play in the NFL, he won't change. Now that said, if he has
changed, we should sign him. He's a bad-ass on the field and could be the
answer to our prayers.
Plus there's no cocaine in Miami, right?

ReplyDelete
17. WHP, you really missed the point here. I never said we shouldn't sign Matt
Jones. In fact, if you could go through my history of comments at the SS,
you'd know I wanted to sign him last year. Of course, he ended up getting
arrested this year again, so I would've been wrong. I did say he was
everything you want in wide receiver....
Personally I wouldn't want Jared Allen on the Dolphins because he's a
psycho. great football player, but absolute psycho off the field. J-lo
would wet herself. Marc Anthony too.
I have no issue with the fact that Jones had a problem in his past. I do
have issue with him not caring enough to avoid that problem (it's not like
cocaine falls from the sky), and I have issue with any player engaging in
conduct detrimental to the team. He f**ked his team TWICE. He definitely
needs a change of scenery, and I'm willing to give him ONE more chance
before I decide if he doesn't deserve to play in the NFL. But if we sign
him and he f**ks US, then it gets personal.

Whoa? Slush puppies? Where, when, where?

No to Quinn and I'm not a big fan of Matt Jones. He's said football is not his first love, basketball is.

ReplyDelete
19. WHP, they all have the same salary cap but the disparity between team
salaries is huge in the NFL. There's no surprise that the really bad teams
have low pay-rolls when compared to the really good teams. For example, the
JETS team salary for 2008 was approx. $117M, whereas the CHIEFS were $84M.
Yes you can buy a lot of talent with $33M. Or you can blow it like the
RAIDERS who spent $152M.
If you remember back to free agency time, the Jets had gone over the salary
cap and needed to clear $13M. They did it by getting Brett Favre to
retire. If he hadn't retired, they were going to be up Sh*t Creek. They
then got rid of a lot of high priced players like Laverneus Coles, Chris
Baker, Eric Barton, Abram Elam, David Bowens, Kenyon Coleman, etc. And
don't forget they gave up half their draft to get Sanchez so they didn't
have to sign a lot of rookies. They also got about a million cash back in
the edwards trade, so in a way he's only an added $3million to the salary
cap.

21. Tins,

Look, I admit that sometimes I have different standards for players in the NFL. I say to myself these guys have the life. They're getting paid ridiculously well to play a damn game plus they can get some of the hottest women on the planet (like Giselle) & still so many guys like Burress, Matt Jones, Pac Man, etc. still screw up in a huge way. I think to myself how dumb are these guys to risk everything???

The truth is that regardless of living "the life" they're just flawed human beings just like anyone else. Obviously some worse than other like the guys that beat up their girlfriends--yes you Randy McMichael--but you have to look at where some of these guys came from. Some of these guys grew up in some crazy poor areas that I wouldn't want to be found dead in. A great athlete is not always going to be a great person. That's why guys like Ronnie Brown are so special. He's a real role model. Not b/c he's a great football player but b/c he's a great human being. Another example would be Warrick Dunn. And there are others but the NFL is just a cross section of society & there are a lot f#cked people out there. There was an article in the Sun about a scalper who stabbed or got stabbed by someone over a ticket!!! It's a crazy world.

BTW--LOL!!! There's absolutely NO COKE in Miami!!! Now that's funny!

Having spent time in Miami recently for business it seems like EVERYONE deals & wants to be Tony Montana. Lots of young kids in H.S. trying to be players...Scary stuff actually.

23. Tins,

As someone who has declared themselves "Tinshaker" you should know by now that I love to mix it up as well. Just trying to keep the coversation lively...LOL!!!

As for Jared Allen, yes, he's a complete psycho but he plays balls to the walls. Talk about a "high motor???" Jesus!!! BTW--After watching the camera shots last night, I'm thoroughly more convinced that Marc Anthony is more feminine that J-LO.

As for Matt Jones, as with every player, there is an element of risk. Is Matt Jones a higher risk b/c he clearly has a drug problem??? The answer is obviously yes. So what do you do??? We take a gamble & sign him preferrably for a one-year, incentive laden deal & see what happens. If his agent refuses & insists on a multiple year deal with substantial guaranteed money then there's no F#CKING way & he can sign with the Bengals.

27. Tins,

It's interesting & actually very funny when teams spends a ton of money & the team underachieves based on the money spent like the Cowboys, the Redskins, & hopefully the Jets again. I sincerely love watching Jerry Jone's & Dan Snyder's faces when they lose b/c they want it so badly they would sell their children to get a win. Those two are serious jackasses.

Living in NYC, obviously the Yankees outspend everyone & this might be their year but they haven't won a World Series since 2000 & trust me, it's a BIG DEAL here. Take the Marlins for example that year with Pudge that they won. I think Pudge asked for $10 Million after that & they didn't re-up b/c I think Jeffrey Lauria's entire payroll was like $30-40 Million.

ReplyDelete
28. I'm only dissing them based on the fact that they are the real version of "The Longest Yard" & not the Adam Sandler version in which case I'd rather be given shock treatments than to watch another one of his movies. After "The Waterboy" which is one of the only movies I ever walked out of---that was it!!!

The Bengals are winning & Cedric Benson is a huge reason. He has finally become the player that the Bears thought they drafted. He looked very average on the Bears & appeared he was on his way out of football. Hey the Bungles took ANOTHER gamble but this one has really paid off so far.

BTW--Another f#cking genius by the way driving his boat ripped out of his mind.

29. Herd,

But Joey did have a funny tirade last year how players were being fined for illegal hits & Matt Jones was not being punished after he got caught "with the cocaine." It was actually pretty hilarious & the reporters were laughing their asses off. I'd go with Joey or Channing as the best Dolphin to interview. They're both out of their minds!

38. I just watched the last nights game again. I've never done that before but last night was worth another look. These are the players & things that REALLY stood out to me;

1) The combo of Ronnie & Ricky is even better than I could've imagine
2) Jason Taylor played well & so did Crowder
3) Ferguson was a former 7th round pick of the Jets & IMO is our best defensive player
4) Our best pass rusher was Starks. Not only did he have a recorded sack but he should've been credited for a 2nd sack on the play that was called intentional grounding
5) Will Allen should not have been called for that pass interference on the Jets last drive
6) The refs need to stop this bullsh#t illegal contact call after 5 yards. I've been watching this all season & it's ridiculous. This is a terrible rule & they are calling CB's & Safeties on plays that have no impact on the game. It is impossible to play football without the DB's touching the receivers & vice-versa. Also true with pass interference calls. The refs need to let these guys play. We almost lost the game on these ticky-tack calls.
7) Gibril Wilson got called on a penalty for making the best hit he made all season. IMO--I don't think that should've been a penalty but it was worth it just to lay a guy out.
8) The biggest surprise when watching the game for the second time was that Wilson actually played a very good game. If he can play like that we'll be fine at FS.
9) Our blocking on offense was unbelievable
10) The 2nd biggest surprise was how well Lousaka Polite played
11) Ted Ginn has redeemed himself with that TD
12) Henne looked better than Sanchez. This was REALLY noticeable in the 4th quarter. Sanchez looked like a rookie & Henne looked like a veteran. Henne was as cool as a cucumber down the stretch on two critical 3rd plays on that last drive & those two passes to Camarillo were throws that can't be taught.
13) Don't know what the rest of the season has in store for us especially with the 3 games after the bye week but I'm very excited about the future of this team. If Henne stays healthy I believe he's going to be the guy to lead us deep into the playoffs & hopefully the SB.
14) We need to re-up on Ronnie Brown. I know he's getting up there in terms of age for a RB but he's more than just a great RB, he's the man! The Wildcat is just another formation with anyone else. With Ronnie it's almost unstoppable. Adam Schefter said that before this year's draft we were in talks with the Browns to trade Ronnie for Braylon Edwards. I heard the rumors for the last two years & although I think Edwards looked great last night--with everything that Ronnie has done since he came back from knee surgery--I just wouldn't trade him.

43. Lots of people on all the boards I read are crying that Ronnie should be resigned. Public Service Announcement: Ronnie Browns contract expires the same year the CBA expires. This means lots of things, including:

In 2009, there is no June 1 rule for Signing Bonus acceleration. If a player is removed from the roster or his contract is assigned via waivers or trade at any time in the 2009 League Year, any unamortized signing bonus will be immediately included in Team Salary.

There is no year-end netting of incentives in 2009. Not-likely-to-be-earned incentives are charged to team salary immediately when earned, and likely-to-be-earned incentives are deducted when they are no longer possible to earn.

Guaranteed salary from 2010 and beyond is reallocated to 2009 unless the entire 2009 salary is guaranteed.

50% of guaranteed salary in any League Year beyond 2012 is reallocated to 2009.

The 30% increase rule restricts salary increases from 2009 to 2010. For example: A player with a $500,000 salary in 2009 would be limited to annual salary increases of $150,000 ($500,000 x 30%) beginning in 2010.

A team can include only three veteran team incentives in a player contract covering 2009 and beyond. These incentives must also be coupled with a playtime requirement. Previously, clubs were limited to eight team incentives and no playtime requirement.

The lines with 50% and 30% in them are particularly interesting to Ronnie Browns situation IMHO. The fins can't go crazy putting together a typical contract with signing bonus and guaranteed money without considering the business landscape of the league in future years. If they sign him to a typical monster contract (what he's obviously worth at this juncture IMHO), they're gonna get hit with an acceleration of 1/2 his money that's promised/allocated past 2012. I'm not thinking that a 2 year contract is in anybody's best interest, and therefore I recommend you all leave this complicated contract issue to the experts who get paid to do it.

I also would like to see Ronnie resigned, but I'm aware of at least some of the many challenges to doing it.

Who else is getting their contracts redone this year? I'm honestly asking, 'cause off the top of my head I can't think of any big deals getting done lately. Perhaps the first will be a model the rest of the league follows?

It's not Madden.

I feel the whole football watching world would be better off if they truly recognized this fact; it's not madden.

Tin, I think we signed sheets more as a replacement for Cobbs than because of Ricky's ankle which Sparano said isn't serious. He also gets an extra week for it to heal. The way we play smashmouth with the running game, we need extra RBs. Hilliard is a big back who runs downhill and Sheets is more of a speed guy who will probably return some kicks.

2009. He was rated somewhere in the middle rounds. He is known as the
'Ankle-Breaker'. do a search for him at youtube and you'll see why.
Another reason he dropped out of the draft was that he ran a 4.47 at the
combine, but was previously timed at 4.39.
