May The Source Be With You

I tend to take the weekends off from the blog, as well as the newspaper blogs, but lately I've noticed that the stuff I bring up on a Wednesday ends up on the newspapers on a Saturday/Sunday. If it shows up at all.

Case in point, Miami Herald's one-liner extraordinaire, Barry Jackson, who never claims a source but often publishes the one-line stories that we've been waiting to hear, printed this story on Saturday.

Whereas I mentioned Darius Butler as the top Dolphin CB prospect on Wednesday.

I meant to publish this story about prospects I had confirmed were getting interest and meetings with the Dolphins on Wednesday afternoon as well but put it off until Thursday. In it I mentioned CB Sherrod Martin from Troy University. And I mentioned that the Dolphins had sent not lowly scouts but coaches and higher-up management to view and meet with these prospects.

In any event, since Barry Jackson doesn't like to reveal his sources, I'll tell you for him. It's ME! LOL.

My sources on the other hand were from scouring the web looking for prospect-local reports, and Rob Rang and Chad Reuter from NFLdraftscout.com who recently joined forces with CBSSports.com which I am not too happy about.

[Update: Now (Monday) Omar Kelly of the Sun-Sentinel has reported the same Brandon London story I posted on Friday. He said he was unaware of Brandon London's modeling career until he saw him on BET's Rip the Runway concert on TV yesterday. Really? Completely unaware? He also failed to mention that Gibril Wilson, also a member of the same Super-Bowl winning Giants team that London won a ring with, is also a model. Maybe he wasn't on the BET special...]

  1. LOL @ Tin

I've taken a close look at our current roster and based on the most updated roster, I came up with what I feel are realistic drafts needs.
    s
NT, LB, CB, OT depth, WR and FB/TE/HB. LOL
    s
Not that I just uncovered the answer to the meaning of life, but these are the obvious voids if you expect some players already on our roster to step up.
    s
My latest mock without possible trade ups or downs to target specific players. I feel these players fit what the trifecta is looking for.
    s

#25 CB Sean Smith 6-2 215, Utah (big, athletic and physical with good speed who could play safety down the road)
    s
#44 WR Hakeem Nicks 6-1 210, North Carolina (big, physical possession WR)
    s
#56 CB Sherrod Martin 6-1 200, Troy (good size and decent speed, quality corner skill set)
    s
#87 NT Dorell Scott 6-4 312, Clemson (good size and speed, developmental prospect who can get bigger and better)
    s
#122? ILB Jasper Brinkley 6-2 255, South Carolina (has the size, speed and skills to be a top 3-4 ILB, a history of injuries drop him here)
    s
#150? OT Lydon Murtha 6-7 306, Nebraska (big guy who's very quick and well conditioned, depth at both tackle spots - I'd rather have an athletic guy as a backup over an oversized guy who needs time to develop, he'll get our QBs killed)

Notice I don't have an OLB on the list. I'm thinking we focus more on CB and WR in this draft and maybe take a college DE in the 7th and convert him to OLB and let him compete with Wake, Anderson, Moses and Walden.
    s
I have us taking ILB Jasper Brinkley in the 4th who has similar size to Pepper Johnson, a former Parcells favorite. Brinkley has had some injuries that will probably drop him in this draft.
    s
Tin, do you have a feeling we could re-sign JT who wants to be closer to his family (South Florida), as long as he is willing to compete for playing time and accept a reasonable salary? I do!
    s
Jason wants to be in South Florida and that's why he balked at Washington's terms of participating in 75% of their offseason conditioning program. He could do that in Miami.
    s
He's coming off of a bad season with injury problems where he said he's not worth $8M. How about a 1 year deal worth $2.5-3M to come back home? I wouldn't even expect him to play 50-55 downs like he always did for us in the past. More like 20-25 in a rotation with Porter, Roth and Wake.
    s
JT knows he screwed up but he can also help us and finish his career where he belongs, in Miami. He's now a situational pass rusher and we don't ask him to carry the load. We wouldn't need to draft an OLB this yearsas we fill more pressing needs this year.sIt allows us to make that a top priority next year.

  2. Yes I agree with the JT comment, IF the reason he wouldn't fulfill his contractual obligations was to be with his family.s However, I think it has more to do with his Hollywood aspirations, and I'm not talking Hollywood, Florida.
    s
Also, here are the official (so far) draft pick numbers:s
    s
    25, 44, 56, 87, 122, 153, 165, 183, and 188.
    s
I have to look into Murtha as I know little about him.s Wasn't he the top lifter at the Combine?s I remember seeing him run the 40 but nothing else.
    s
Personally you know I prefer Britt to Nicks, but honestly it would be hard to go wrong with the most of the first day receivers IMO.s I think they all can be contributors in this league.s The thing that worries me about Nicks, is that he wasn't UNC #1 WR and making that leap to the NFL might be asking too much.s Britt on the other hand has been THE go-to guy at Rutgers for at least 2 seasons and is more physical than Nicks, though Nicks might have better hands.s I still think Britt is a more polished receiver and I don't believe in drafting projects that high up.s Think of how many big play receivers there are in the NFL who were 4th, 5th or 7th round picks, etc.s And how many flops came out in the first round or two because teams thought they could mold them into something.s I think the first couple of rounds you need to take them for what they are because that is what made them successful enough to be in that position.s
    s
For example, let's look at the Raiders. They drafted Russel, tried to turn him into something he's not (a pocket passer) and have been unsuccessful.s Then they picked up McFadden, and used him the way he had always been used and were very successful with that until he got hurt (their defense still sucked, and so did their passing game).

  3. Re: Murtha, he wasn't the best lifter, but he was the fastest lineman in the 40.s I knew he stood-out for some reason.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Mr. Bungle, Brinkley would be a steal in the 4th round.s I saw him at the combine, cannot recall his numbers but I do know that he's a football player. Like Tin, I prefer Britt over Nicks based on production at the position.

  5. Yeah, I think you're kinda getting full of yourself tin...you're not going to go from "random blogger on the SS dolphins blog" to the source for all things dolphins for all dolphins journalists and fans in one month.
    s
If you said something that gives a professional journalist an idea that's understandable, but to insinuate everyone is looking to your blog for dolphins information is a bit far fetched.
    s
I say this all respectfully, it's a nifty blog, but I wouldn't bet the upside down Sacramento townhouse (j/k) on it becoming a gold standard...at least not just yet...

    ReplyDelete
  6. Jahndoh, while I appreciate the criticism, I never said I was the gold standard, or that anyone was getting their ideas from me (ok, i did jokingly say I was Barry Jackson's source, but that's a joke and should be taken as such.s If you don't get it, then I'd assume you don't read much Barry Jackson).s I only stated that I posted the new blogs by these writers a few days before they did.s I don't think that makes me full of myself.s Besides, I know for a fact that at least two of the newspaper bloggers read my blog on a regular basis.
    s
I don't get the upside down townhouse reference at all, you'll need to clue me in on that one.
    s
BTW I'm currently typing up a new blog entry that will be featured here today and on ESPN by Thursday!
    s
    (Yes I'm joking)

  7. "If you don't get it, then I'd assume you don't read much Barry Jackson."
    s
No I don't actually, and I apologize if I missed the joke....
    s
Upside down (as in the house is worth less than the mortgage) was merely a reference to the Sac town real estate market (I've a close friend there who IS currently upside down)...I guess it's not that funny if it takes an explanation :( ...anyway...my misunderstanding...cheers.

  8. no worries, this post was meant to be taken very tongue in cheek, it refers also to previous entries.
    s
Sacramento's housing market has been upside down for several years, so it's no different now than it has been.s At least it's not Stockton! ;)

  9. I tried to post this earlier, but something happened to it.s Must be floating in cyberspace.s That or Tinshaker had banned me.
    s
I am on board with Brinkley.s I get lots of SEC football here where I live.s Plus, I like his name.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Is there a LB named Cronkite?s I'd feel safer with a Cronkite than a Brinkley.
    s
PS. herdfan, your drunken rant over the weekend was hilarious.s lol.

  11. You are partially responsible.s You lured me into that one with the arrest talk.s I still haven't heard anything much about it here, and I was even at a party Saturday evening to watch the Eers Bball game, and usually my WV friends don't waste time telling me about any Herd transgressions.s Not that all the Eer's spend their free time in Church.s Oops, there I go again with the religious references!!!!

  12. And I was talking about Jasper.s You don't get that many Jasper's these days!

  13. It's true, Jasper went out with the Victorians!

  14. I like Kenny Britt as well but I had to choose between him and Sean Smith in the 1st round and I'd rather take the corner. I do not feel Britt will be there for us in the 2nd round.
    s
As for the draft order, we won't know the 4th through 7th until the compensatory picks are announced
    s

  15. It's a down-economy, there won't BE any comp picks, lol.
    s
Thos numbers are what were released this last week by the NFL.s Yes they are subject to change, but they are the current official numbers.
    s
It's looking very likely that all the WRs will slide a bit what with the dropping of Crabtree since Seattle got the Housh.s And the longer people go ga-ga over Nicks, the longer Britt will stay in the 2nd round.s Of course, that will likely change when the teams have finished watching the film.
    s
I've updated the latest blog entry with some Sean Smith stuff.
