2010 Draft Prospect - Kam Chancellor, FS

Some of you may recall I liked Kam Chancellor last year - I had him as a possible Miami target at FS behind Missouri's William Moore.

Chancellor is Taylor Mays size - and if Miami were to draft him he'd be a real wrecking ball in the backfield - he's known for hitting hard - but he's also known for his coverage skills.  For a 6'3", 228 lb fella, he can run well and doesn't get beat in man-to-man situations very often.  In fact, I'd go as far to say that he could cover any TE one-on-one and it would take an above-average WR to shake him.
Perhaps the best thing I could say about Chancellor is that he won several awards in his college career - but not the kind you get for on-field play - the kind you get for showing hard work, determination and leadership off-the-field and in the off-season program.

He started out as a cornerback, grew into a hard-hitting strong safety, then matured into a patient and intelligent free safety.  As a likely 4th or even 5th round pick, it would be hard to say no if he's on the board.

Tin, why is he only a 4th or 5th round pick in your opinion?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Tin - I don't think he'll last to the 4th.  I think we'd have to pick him in the 3rd.  One thing's for such , though - Kam sure loves him some Kam.

    ReplyDelete
  3. 1. Because he doesn't play for USC or Texas.
    2. Because at 6'3", 230lbs, he doesn't fit the safety protoype - despite the fact that Omar said he does in his latest blog.  The Dolphins safeties have all been under 6'1", 205lbs since the Trifecta took over - and now they are looking at conversion CBs - they have a thing against bigger safeties, and they're not the only ones.  Just like Moore last year, some scouts may try to put him in a LB box, but then he's def off the 3-4 radar.
    3.  There's nothing wrong with being a 4th or 5th rounder in this deep of a draft.  He may go higher but I don't see there being a huge demand for safeties, and I think Eric Berry, Taylor Mays, Earl Thomas, Nate Allen, Reshad Jones, Morgan Burnett should all go before Kam, and then you have Darrel Stuckey, and TJ Ward, and Myron Rolle and Major Wright, etc - the safety pool is so crowded that someone like Robert Johnson, Terrell Skinenr or Robert Vaughn could go undrafted - There could be a lot of fairly famous undrafted free agents by the end of this thing.

  4. Tin,

I'm a Hokie fan and I think Kam is a very good player at the college level, but his coverage skills aren't that great.  As a 4th round prospect he may be decent, but I'm worried that he'd get worked in the passing game.  Something we've seen quite a bit from our beloved Fins already.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Worlids is in my opinion, a better pro prospect from Virginia Tech.  His stats don't do his ability justice...he consistently brought pressure each and every game, and I don't remember there being one Tackle that just outright contained him.

He is a bit inconsistent within the game, but he always has his moments where he appears a dominant force.

    ReplyDelete
  6. So you don't think he's gotten better in that regard?  I watched some tape on him and he honestly looked better in coverage than most of the VT corners.  And he was pretty damn good at the East-West Shrine game.  Ultimately it does depend on what you want out of your last line of defense and i want someone who's going to bring down the receiver, not bounce off of him.

I am very biased in this regard because I was an over-sized safety - so I always stick up for them lol

    ReplyDelete
  7. I agree that not everybody loves his size for being a FS.  And someone like Robert Johnson might be a more likely pick in round 6.  Tin, people are normally in love with VT defenders and tons of Fins fans loved Macho Harris last year... I guess he had an okay year - about 6 or 8 starts and 41 tackles.  I'm not sure if Macho's body of work will influence Kam's draft status or not...

  8. I think for a 4th round prospect, he's decent.  You're right, he's a physical force and fun to watch.  But he can get worked on the deeper routes with better receivers...his speed is average, but his quickness is even a little more disappointing when it comes to the pro level.  I'll give you his instincts and toughness though...really good at coming up and playing the run.  And you can recognize by the video...he hits like a truck.  Probably the hardest hitting FS in the draft.

Tin, the problem with most big safeties is they can't match up athletically most of the time. They're playing a reactionary position and it naturally takes bigger safeties a little more time to get going, and they tend to be a little stiff.

Big safeties were good to have when running the ball was primary. Not now in a passing era. I remember in the late 80s when teams started going away from the bigger DBs to 5-10 185 corners and 6-0 200 safeties to match up better against the smaller explosive WRs that were prominent in the league.

Even in today's game, a big safety is unlikely to be able to stay with say a Reggie Wayne at 6-0 200.

  15. Nice write up Tin, just goes to show that this will be a very deep draft.  I don't put as much energy into researching these guys as others do, but really looking forward to seeing who we pick.  With this kind of depth, could this possibly be a "no miss" draft for us?  It seems like every day I'm learning of a new prospect I had never heard of before but has an impressive resume.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Tin, I wonder if Nate Allen will turn some heads at his pro-day today? He couldn't run at the combine because of a pulled muscle or something... He has the prototypical size Parcells seems to favor in safeties. The knock is he does not have elite speed, but from what I saw watching him play he has pretty good game speed. He's a 3 year starter from a fairly large school and was the defensive signal caller. He has all those things Parcells likes in his draft picks.

As Red Dog was saying, there are so many prospects in this draft it's amazing... I still can't make up my mind who we should draft should we keep the 12th pick.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Kam seems like a good prospect based on the Tinshakers knowledge of this player
Sounds to me to be an excellent mid round choice in a draft filled with prospective NFL talent
Certainly an area of concern for the Miami Dolphins

U never see this type of insight on Knights blog ;) LOL

    ReplyDelete
  18. it would be hard to miss, but we did draft PW last year so...

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think Nate Allen will ended up going a lot higher than projected because
he is more like what teams like the Dolphins want in a Safety - 6'1", 207
lbs, runs a 4.48 to 4.58 range and has excellent leadership/communication
and great instincts - he also is a good tackler and has played both strong
and free at USF - and he is a converted quarterback.

Okay so now there is a rumor the Dolphins are interested in C. J. Spiller. But it's nothing more than any other rumor out there about who we might be interested in. They should be interested in Spiller because he's one of the BPA in the draft.

I've noticed a lot of fans are really focused on immediate needs. Let's say we draft Spiller at #12, and we address other positions and needs in other rounds this year. We end up having a pretty good season and show progress and Spiller is one of the reasons we make the playoffs but we don't go very far. Then we draft again in 2011 and we get even better. Maybe we get real close to the big game but fall just short. Then we draft again in 2012 get a little bit better and we're back competing for a title. Is anyone going to point to the 2010 draft and say we should have drafted a NT or some other position if we've been a playoff team for the last two years and we're getting close to being a champion? Nope!

The draft is not for immediate need, especially when drafting as high as we are this year. This young team isn't built to win now or never. We're constructed to compete now and for years to come.

Tin, do you think Nate Allen is worthy of a 2nd round pick at #43? If so maybe we target LB at #12 and a S like Allen in the 2nd.

In this draft our best case scenario for need and value might be:
    1. LB
    2. S
    3. NT or WR
    4. NT or WR

  31. The Knight who says Ni!March 30, 2010 at 11:35 AM

Well the fact that you didn't like getting hit, that will do it as far as your football career goes. LOL

In today's passing era the more athletic ball hawk type free safeties are the way to go. We already have Bell who is a big hitter and acts like an extra LB against the run. Clemons may not be a FS but he could be Bell's eventual replacement at SS in a couple of years. Bell is entering his 8th season and has had quite a few injuries throughout his career. Not sure how many years he has left at a high level. He's in his prime now. When does he start to show signs of slowing down?

However it goes down, a FS prospect who can make an impact right away or in a couple of years would be a good thing to get now. By 2012 our starting safeties could be Clemons at SS and the rookie this year at FS. Clemons would be in his 4th season and the FS would be in his 3rd.

  32. Agree the draft is not always for immediate need
This is why Tebow met with Bellicheat in Boston yesterday while simultaneously dotting the eyes on Tom Bradys new contract

  34. Knight how do we really know if we are ready to compete right now ?  We didn't show that last year against the also rans of the league.  Look who we lost to !!!

I don't expect us to lose to teams like that if we have the talent..  I do think there were some things going on in the locker room that lead to some of those losses.  But both of those guys are gone this year which makes us a better team even before the draft or preseason.

  36. Personally I would say no to Allen at 43 based solely on the depth of the
draft. But like I've said before, I would rather not spend a high pick on a
safety and have two guys with relatively little or no experience battle it
out to start (ex, Clemons vs Nate Allen). I'd rather get a veteran and a
later round prospect in the equation.
However, I do think it would be fantastic if we had Will Allen, Jason Allen,
and Nate Allen on the field at the same time. Dan Dierdorf's head would
    explode!

Fang, we could have beaten the Colts and the Saints with a just a few more plays and less breakdowns. It was that close. We win those two games we're 9-7 and in the playoffs. If we had won those two games that PIT game at the end of the season has much more meaning. It changes everything.

We competed all year and were in just about every game. We were in most games in the 4th quarter and a few got away. That was while losing quite a few players to season ending injuries.

  43. Knight,

We definitely had a very tough schedule last year & we had a bunch of significant injuries (especially Ferguson & Ronnie) but that's the NFL.  The Colts???  The Saints???  Could've, would've, should've....But didn't.  However, at least we competed with everything we had in those games.  In the end we came up short but those were both Super Bowl teams.  It's one thing to lose to two of the best teams & QB's in the entire NFL (that I can live with) but I was far more disappointed & sickened in the way we played against the Titans & the Texans.  Come on!!!  I hate to see us lose to anyone but those teams embarrassed us.

    ReplyDelete
  44. We Have PlaymakersMarch 30, 2010 at 1:01 PM

    Fang,

Forget about what was going on in the locker room....That happens on every team.   Just look at the Jets & Kerry Rhodes???   I believe that stuff is really overrated at this level.  These guys are still pro's.  At the end of the day when you lose your most important defensive player & you take a look at the level of talent on defense & you throw in the inexperience with two rookie CB's that's why we I believe we finished 7-9 & are picking @ 12.

Don't get me wrong.  I'm glad we showed our lack of talent & inability to make plays on defense b/c we can definitely use the higher picks @ 12 then somwhere in the high teens or the twenties.

    ReplyDelete
  45. That's a weird notion - I'd rather have the talent and the WINS than the
    high draft picks.
But our record was mostly due to injuries - add Chad Pennington, Will Allen,
Jason Ferguson, Justin Smiley, Jake Grove, Ronnie Brown, Channing Crowder,
Joey Porter - these are not run of the mill injuries here, these are all
high level starters in the NFL - plug them in and we don't look as
talentless as all that. These injuries piled on top of sub-par performances
by our entire receiving corps and a generous sprinkling of missed tackles is
what took us from an 11-5 team to a 7-9 team. if all of those guys had
stayed healthy and everyone performed at their usual levels, we would've
repeated 2008 even with a harder schedule and lame play-calling by the
    coaches.

As for Tim Tebow I believe he's a good guy who has leadership qualities and is a just a good football player. That doesn't mean he's a 1st round QB prospect. I think his upside as a quality NFL QB is 50-50 and that's not good enough to be a 1st round pick. However I do believe some team will take a chance on him in the 2nd round.

Maybe he can become a FB/HB type who can run a little, block and catch, and utilize passing options. That's good for the 2nd round if you really believe in the guy like the trifecta believed in Pat White. The problem with Pat White is that he got exposed when he wasn't really ready but our coaches wanted to experiment and get a feel for how teams would react with him in the game. Now a lot of people are writing him off. Not fair!

If Tebow wants to be a QB, he would be better served playing in the CFL for a couple of years in my opinion and working on his passing skills. But get with a team that will run somewhat of a pro style.

Just like Pat White last year, I wouldn't take Tebow any earlier than the 4th round but a team will take a chance on him earlier. There is a lot of gambling that goes on in the NFL. LOL

    ReplyDelete

I didn't say he would be taken in the 4th round. I said I wouldn't take him any earlier than that. I said some team will probably pick him in the 2nd round. Now the rumor is late 1st. I wish someone would take him before #12. That way we would have even more prospects available when we pick.

What am I suppose to admit being wrong about? Let's say Tebow gets picked #1 overall, that doesn't mean he'll pan out. Just because a guy gets picked higher than I think he should doesn't mean it was a good pick.
