Holy Free Agency, Batman! - Updated 5pm Eastern

Let's just dig in (updates throughout the day)
  • Joey Porter - RELEASED.  Since they released him three weeks ago, no one remembered to report the actual transaction which took place today.
  • Gibril Wilson - RELEASED.  Surprising move considering Jeff Ireland's 'don't blame Gibril' speech a week ago.
  • Nate Jones - RELEASED. Visiting Denver as the Broncos continue to use Miami rejects to build their secondary.
  • Akin Ayodele - RELEASED.  His age and price tag probably made a trade partner hard to find so they cut their losses and just let him go.
  • Chad Pennington - NEGOTIATIONS AT AN IMPASSE, PROBABLY GONE.  Wants a no-trade clause in his contract, the Dolphins said no.
  • Jason Ferguson - NO REPORTS OF A DEAL, DOLPHINS MAY WAIT UNTIL AFTER THE DRAFT.
  • Jason Taylor -  NO REPORTS OF A DEAL, DOLPHINS MAY WAIT UNTIL AFTER THE DRAFT. Taylor said he wants a 2 year deal, but unsure if he wants it with Miami.  As long as Cameron Wake is around, Taylor will be unhappy.
!THIS JUST IN!  Tin's Fins has discovered per a very reliable source that both Antrel Rolle and Karlos Dansby attended the Miami Heat game versus the Lakers and were part of a group that had a luxury suite at the game.  Other members of the group - Miami Dolphins' Ronnie Brown, and Vontae Davis.

Based on their asking prices, it's unlikely that Miami will get both players so they'll likely wait for a decision from Rolle before making an offer to Dansby.
  • Karlos Dansby - VISITING MIAMI TODAY.  He wants $30 million guaranteed and Arizona wants him back, so it's not a huge chance he ends up signing with Miami, but I'd say with the release of Wilson, they have a little extra cash.
  • Antrell Rolle - VISITING MIAMI TODAY.  With Wilson's departure, his chances of getting an offer from Miami increase, but I'm not sure he fits the Trifecta mold.  His agent has already said that the Cardinals will get preference in deciding on an offer, so he obviously wants to stay there.  UPDATE:  Miami has offered Rolle a 5 year contract, details unknown.  The Cardinals have offered him a 6 year contract worth $38.6 million and he has turned it down because he wants a 5yr/$40 million deal. UPDATE:  The Dolphins have apparently fallen behind in the bidding war and the Giants are reported to have offered more money.  Rolle and agent, Drew Rosenhaus have yet to announce anything.
Anquan Boldin has been traded along with a 2010 5th round draft pick to the Baltimore Ravens for a 2010 3rd round and a 2010 4th round Draft pick.  Makes me wonder what Dallas was thinking when they traded for Roy Williams (not that I didnt already have that moment at the time).

  1. And so the churn continues .......

  2. Really was hoping to see us get something for our baggage.  At this point my expectations are so low I'll be happy as long as we don't give the Browns a 2nd for Roth.....

    ReplyDelete
  3. lol, that would be priceless.

    ReplyDelete
  4. You know what is crazy... Gibril Wilson was paid $24million dollars for the last two seasons!

    ReplyDelete
  5. The Dolphins offered deal to Rolle, I bet it's bigger than Wilson's deal...thinking 35 mil over 5 years.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I heard there were a few Dolphins cheerleaders in the suite too - trying to massage the ink of Rolle's and Dansby's pens...

  7. Tin I just don't think it is wise to mess with free agents. We've seen it with the guys we have brought in, most of them are looking for a payday to retire on. Once they have the big guaranteed money there is little incentive to continue putting their bodies on the line. Rolle's stats are not much better than Wilson's and depending on the source they are worse.

    ReplyDelete
  8. That's why I prefer the draft.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Agree with Patrick on Rolle being an over hyped waste of money if your gonna replace Wilson with another player similar or even worse
Lets Hope Clemons can Improve and play like he did in that preseason game last year
    Which was quite impressive

Expect Dansby to shake down Mr Magoo for big bucks
Expect Dansby to Become a Miami Dolphin Today

  10. Whether you like it or not, the Dolphins are aggressively trying to sign
Rolle and have yet to make Dansby an offer. If Rolle signs, they likely
won't be able to afford Dansby. So Dansby coming to Miami is dependent on
    Rolle saying no.

Tin, I've been waiting for you to get going on this. So I went to lunch and came back and everything was right with the world.  :)

The reports on Rolle's deal I've seen is 5 years and between $35-40M. I think we can sign both Rolle and Dansby. The release of Porter and Wilson alone can almost pull it off.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Unless Ross decides to get cheap, they can sign anyone they want...  No cap baby!

    ReplyDelete
  13. The Knight who says Ni!March 5, 2010 at 11:22 AM

Rolle is a better cover safety than Wilson. Rolle was a corner in college and in his first year in the NFL.

    ReplyDelete
  14. The Knight who says Ni!March 5, 2010 at 11:30 AM

Sometimes it's a better fit scheme-wise and you can't always compare the stats.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Knight, if it were just a cap issue then I'd say it's possible, but it's
more of a cash issue. We may have released Porter and Wilson, but they
still get paid. Also, it wouldn't be wise to pay out a lot if there's a cap
next year and we'd end up over the cap. Plus I think Ross is making
    cutbacks right now too.

  16. So what U meant to say was your statement on Karlos Dansby having 0 Chance coming to Miami to negotiate becoming a Dolphin after I asked U thought on the possibility were wrong
and that was good immediate  insight Home

    ThanX Tin LOL

    It`s OK
We can only give our opinions

Rolle will never be a Dolphin
Just bargain basement shopping and kicking the tires to
Drive the price up for the next unsuspecting fool
    Go Redskins! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  17. True.
For example, I've never won an NFL game, but I think I would be a better
    Offensive Coordinator than Dan Henning.....

    ReplyDelete
  18. Tin, the trick would be to front load the contracts for this year... It all depends on Ross.

    ReplyDelete
  19. We are not going to get in a ridiculous bidding war for Rolle
He is just not that good

    ReplyDelete
  20. The Knight who says Ni!March 5, 2010 at 11:41 AM

    LOL

    ReplyDelete
  21. The Knight who says Ni!March 5, 2010 at 11:43 AM

That's why you get creative during the uncapped year, this year.

Dansby wouldn't be in Miami if he was out of our range.

Are you Ross' financial advisor? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree Home, but they have to land a couple positional starters in FA or it will put too much pressure on the draft.

    ReplyDelete
  23. You bring them both in and work both out and negotiate with both, that
doesn't mean you'll actually sign both. Have you never heard of a job
interview? Do you hire everyone who interviews?

    ReplyDelete
  24. How is my saying Dansby won't sign with Miami any different than you saying
Rolle won't sign with miami? It's the same thing! lol
To be fair, I made that statement 3 weeks ago and you made the Rolle
statement today while Rosenhaus and Ireland are on the phone with each other
    lol.
In the end it doesn't matter because free agency rarely ever pans out. For
every Michael Turner there's 3 or 4 Joey Porters.
Anytime you have to get into a bidding war over someone, you're going to
find yourself over-paying. The Draft this year is deep and solid. I'd
rather take the $40 million dollars and give it to the Rams for their #1
    pick.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The Knight who says Ni!March 5, 2010 at 12:04 PM

Tin, I understand that. But the Dolphins knew Dansby was going to be high-priced. That's all I'm saying.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Point of discussion was U thought and said we have 0 chance on signing Dansby when I brought his name up minutes after the Porter release statement
    Thats All

I dont care about Rolle at these prices
Personally think he is no better than Wilson
Wilson had a bad year and still made 93 tackles with bad LB coverage and 2 rookie CBs
think Wilson will do better this year

We Better Make Some Move Quick Here in FA
Magoo wanted to be a Big Shot and own a football team
    So Pay Up, Sucker

    ThanX Tin

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yes, they knew that but that doesn't mean they planned on spending $80
million on two players. In fact, I think it's highly unlikely they did.
They probably planned on getting one of them. If Rolle does say no, I'll
bet you Dansby gets his payday. If Rolle says yes I think the Dolphins walk
    on Dansby.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes
    I Know
He started at UM  not far from where I live in South Florida
Watched almost all his play here in Coral Gables, FL
was a great college player and promising NFL star

Now he  is after that one PHATT contract and his play has diminished somewhat
missing many tackles and only a few Ints

Expecting Rolle to be signed shortly to the  NY Giants

    Peace Bros

  29. The Knight who says Ni!March 5, 2010 at 12:40 PM

I'm 50-50 on Rolle because I don't think he's all that but I do think he'd be a better deep safety than Wilson.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The Knight who says Ni!March 5, 2010 at 12:42 PM

However I do think Dansby would help our 3-4 be more effective because he can do a little bit of everything.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Does anyone feel a little wary throwing that kind of cash to guys who are coming from a different scheme?  Kinda sounds like the guy we just cut....

I think between Clemons, Culver, and even Will Allen (or Sean Smith) we could make do, and maybe even do better.  But I really hope Rolle is just hanging around to drive his price tag up, I don't want him.

Can Dansby really be all you guys want him to be?  I think I'm on the spend-the-$-on-Suh-instead bandwagon before grossly overpaying for a 29 yr old 4-3 LB

    ReplyDelete
  32. Way things look, I'm betting we sign neither Rolle nor Dansby.  If the rumor about Peppers ready to sign with Chicago are true, then Dan Snyder just throws his wad of cash at the next overhyped free agent on pundits list.  Aka Dansby.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think Peppers already signed - $14 mil a year.

    ReplyDelete
  34. It's official.  Peppers signed with the Bears.  They also signed Chester Taylor and some tight end I never heard of.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The TE was the back up in San Diego. I don't recall how much he played, but he is suppose to be pretty good at blocking which will fit Martz style of O.

    ReplyDelete
  36. The TE is Brendan Manumaleuna, who is considered as one of the best blocking TE's in the league. He recently was the 2nd TE in San Diego and played mostly on running downs (with Antonio Gates in as a pass catching TE). He played for the Rams when Mike Martz was there in the Kurt Warner & Marshall Faulk era, so the Bears know what they get in the player.

I'd prefer Dansby over Rolle if I could pick one of them. I consider Dansby as a Top 5 ILB in a 3-4 Defense in the NFL. Rolle is a good player but nothing special. He'd still be a huge upgrade in the pass defense, though.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hey Red Dog, agree with you 100%. Let's build through the draft , hit or miss its allot cheaper then free agencies. Takes allot longer, but pays off in long run.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think you're right Dansby is in his "street walker" mode, and I would guess Rolle is standing on the same corner across the street.  That's what FA is all about (show me the money).  I hope the Dolphins have learned from there past mistakes in the FA market, but something tells me I'm only trying to fool myself.  Oh well it's their money not mine.

Adam Schefter just said that Dansby will be announced as a Dolphin tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The Knight who says NiMarch 5, 2010 at 5:11 PM

Dansby is a Dolphin, it's a done deal. It looks like Tin might be right that we won't sign both Dansby and Rolle who could end up being a Giant. He took a physical today and they really need help at safety.

  48. We Got a Playmaker!!!March 5, 2010 at 5:41 PM

    13kv,

I think it's going to be Kindle.  I'd like to see us trade a 2nd for the TE Olsen.  However we need to make those draft picks count for LB's, a NT, a WR, & a FS.

    ReplyDelete
  49. We Got a Playmaker!!!March 5, 2010 at 5:50 PM

Agreed.  I think Kindle will be a better player than McClain anyway.  If we go NT don't sleep on Price from UCLA.  That kid looks ready to roll.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Just as I wrote him off we signed him.........I think the contract is fair if he actually makes a signifigant impact.  Paired with Nolan, I think there's a good chance of that.  How soon do we find out if he'll play ILB or OLB?

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'm gonna have to do some serious manipulating of my ranking's now...

Wasn't even considering an OLB @12 until now,was sticking to ILB(McC)!!
NT(cept for SUH,McCoy) and OLB were only trade-down options for me,
so now I have to figure-out ONE that's good enough for pk 12
incase we can't find a dancing partner...

    ReplyDelete
  52. Well,IFFF we take an OLB or NT in the 1st,
    we're gonna need that 2nd for a NT or OLB,(STILL NEED A BUNCH of LBs @least 2)...

    I like Olsen(of course Canes),
but I'd like to fill the D voids w'@least the first two pks(was the 1st three prior to Dansby),
    and then the O w'rnd 3 and 4 (WR/TE,TE/WR either way)..

But like I said ,I have some serious adjustments to make due to CD!!

    ReplyDelete
  53. STILL taking McC IFFF he falls, I'll put KDansby out-side I I have to... NT in the 2nd...

    ReplyDelete
  54. The street walker is ours :-D , I'm good with that.  Now,  Just Win Baby !!  KV your rankings are going to be changing quite a bit in the next few weeks.  This is trifecta's MO, they are going to fill as many of the weaknesses as they possably can before the draft.  Don't get to far ahead of yourself with those rankings :)

I feel they will be looking for more help at the LB, safety, TE, plus I think my best buddy is a goner.  You know who I mean.

I thought I saw the Flying Spaghetti Monster the other day.

    Dansby over Ayodele.  =-X

  56. LOL ;) !!!
I said we'd need @least 3,4,or maybe even 5 new LBs esp if JP/uknowho both were to leave, lookin that way!!
WE GOT ONE SO-FAR,I'd figure @least two are still to come..

I suggested last pre-season that CClemons would be our Starting FS in o10,IFF not sooner,
STILL need to find his bkup,or some-one to force him into a bkup roll...(YBELL gettin old too)..

Nate Jones IS A BRONCO,so I guess we'll be looking for another CB too,(WAllen's gettin old too)..

We pretty much need TWO of everything,(how'd that happen),LOL!!  LBs,NT,S,(recievers WR/TE),CBs..GOFINS

  57. Antrel Rolle signs with the Giants.
    37m (15m guaranteed) for 5 yrs

  58. A few years ago I felt the defense would get old all at one time and it looks like that's what happened.  It didn't help that Roth didn't work out down here for what ever the reason.  The team was working so hard on the offensive side of the ball leading up to the parcells era, that the defense was kinda looked over.  Plus the fact that we had some real flops on the D side of the ball.  We were simply an awful team.

As for needing 2 of everything, I guess we could say that and it would be true or at least appear to be.

Oh yea went to the Honda Classic today.  Man those guys can play.  All of them shoot for the flag, only saw about 2 or 3 players hit the ball outside of 25 feet from the flag hitting irons from about 160 - 190 yards away.

Now what???  I'd be happy if we signed Fujita & brought back Ferguson & called it a day.

However the Bears need draft picks so if we were able to get Olsen in a trade for a 2nd then I'd be ecstatic!!!
