Tin Bits - Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Oh my, what a way to start the week:
  • Justin Smiley is on the trade block.  While this is somewhat shocking news, he is the most realistic player to be traded in exchange for a much need mid-round pick - I would estimate a 4th rounder.  Still, it is a bit of somber news for right now as he was a fan favorite despite his injuries - he is a smart, nice fella who really bought into the system and took on Jake Long in a mentoring role and we see how that worked out in our favor.  The Dolphins obviously feel they need to get more quality draft picks or would like to move up in the draft and a package that included Smiley and a couple of draft picks could get us into a very good position - perhaps Top 5 (our main trade partner, Kansas City - 5th overall, needs more help on the O-line).   In my mock draft I have Eric Berry going 5th to the Chiefs.
  • More bad news as Ronnie Brown has reportedly been arrested in Atlanta for DUI.  He failed to use his indicator when making a lane change (dickhead cop).  First of all, I need to mention that while I don't want any drunk drivers on the road, this should be noted - in a period of 6 months - as a 20 year old, I was pulled over by Georgia Highway Patrol a dozen times, and once the officer held his gun on me.  My father worked in Atlanta for a total of two years and got 3 DUI charges against him.  He's not really a drinker and I am the most law-abiding citizen on the planet and used to be even more obedient when I was younger - so while I'm not saying that Brown didn't break the law, I'm just letting you know some of my own experience in that area.  Still, it's important to remember that Brown is a single black man driving a probably nice or pimped out vehicle late on a Friday night in Atlanta and this is his first ever run-in with the law.
  • Dolphins off-season conditioning officially kicks off today, but as I previously reported, several Dolphins were already 'getting their condition on' starting earlier this month.  Sophomores Sean Smith, Vontae Davis, and Kory Sheets have been taking advantage of the facilities for weeks now, and Ted Ginn Jr flew in from Cleveland last week.  The latest word from Cameron Wake sum it all up perfectly - "It begins today....... officially...all 3 phases are underway.... Nutrition, Strength and Conditioning...the transformation has begun!"

  • The football season speculation just wouldn't be properly under way if I didn't dust off the EA Madden video game and see just how we stand - I traded for Karlos Dansby (let ting Ayodele go, keeping Torbor as backup) and I let Jason Ferguson go unsigned into free agency - I also traded away Gibril Wilson and stuck a rotation of Jason Allen and Chris Clemons at free safety.  Everything else I left the same, and then I started to play.  The difference in the middle was unbelievable - Dansby was ten times better at tackling and coverage than Ayodele, and he and Crowder always seemed to be in on the run plays together.  I played the first 5 games of the season and was 5-0 (though I had 4 cakewalks I almost lost one because I kept fumbling).  Then I simulated the rest of the season and quite shockingly ended with a 7-9 record and didn't make the playoffs.  So the moral of the story is to keep playing hard and never 'call it in'.

I guess the trifecta feels they can't rely on Smiley anymore. He's been hurt often, missed a lot of games 3 straight seasons going back to SF. Maybe it's also a sign that we're high on some of the other guard options we have.

  2. I think it's a money thing - it's no secret that Ross is no money bags and doesn't want  to pay more than he can sell, and Smiley's production did drop off a bit after his most recent injury.

  3. tin,

you want a dickhead cop, my son got his first ticket last week.  you ready for this one, he got it for playing his radio to loud.  he went past two cop cars that had this guy pulled over and one of them left and followed my son to give him a ticket for his radio to loud.

Sounds like the story line to the movie "Footloose."  LMAO!!!  I think Kevin Bacon might want to burn the original film.

  5. Tins,

What do you mean "Ross is no money bags???"  He's the richest owner in the league.  Perhaps your definition of "money bags" is different than mine.

However even if your definition of "money bags" means that he is cheap or frugal I disagree.  How do you account for the signing of Dansby & while we didn't end up with Rolle we still offered him a nice chunk of change....And last year we shelled out big money to Grove & Carey???   Both questionable signings IMO & both players were overpaid.  I think it's a position where we have depth & with the play of Nate Garner last year who is younger & healthier.  If Smiley had been healthy & started all 32 games for us (actually 33) over the past two seasons do you honestly believe he'd really be on the trading block????

  6. It's amazing how these cops can find any reason they want to pull over
drivers but can never get motivated to respond to a crime scene and/or hunt
    down criminals.
I know that's a sweeping generalization, but maybe they should do something
to improve their reputations....like actually fighting crime!
Could you imagine if we sent soldiers to fight a war and instead of lining
up in battle, they raped and pillaged small towns and
    civilians....oh...nevermind!

  7. LOL@Tins!!!  Could you imagine????  Thanks for the laugh.

  8. They wouldn't tell Smiley not to show up if they didn't already have something lined up...We drafted Gardner last year, Garner filled in quite impressively, and we have a CFL guy in the mix to add to Incognito's signing.....Lots of bodies there, could Carey's days be numbered?

I'm thinking outside of Henne's overblown Tebow comments he is doing his part to muddy the waters.  NOBODY has a clue where we're going in the draft.  The draftniks will latch onto Henne's comment as proof we're drafting Dez or trading for Marshall.

Has there been any other Fins told to stay away for OTA's?

  10. The DUI thing with Brown is disappointing but it wasn't as if he were weaving in and out of lanes from the sound of it.  You didn't say if they gave any testing results as to how much over the limit he was.  If he was just barely over the limit, it's not such a big deal to me than if it were twice the limit.

I got pulled over last week for going 23 in a 15 mph zone, mind you this was going up a rather steep hill and if you don't have a certain amount of speed, it's hard to get to the top.  Then, the officer was called to go to an accident elsewhere and had to let me go!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Who told you Ross was the richest in the league? I'm pretty sure Paul Allen is.

Ross lost a ton of money last year - there was an article about it in one of the papers.   Here's a blurb on his net worth:As of 2007 his estimated net worth according to the Forbes 400 list is $4.5 billion.<span></span> As of 2009 his estimated net worth according to the Forbes 400 List is $2.9 billion.

You cannot compare last year with this year.  Last year there was a salary cap, this year there isn't.  If the owners wanted to they could get rid of all their high priced players and save millions of dollars because there is no minimum spending requirement.  Dansby got 25% less than he asked for.  Rolle's contract offer is pure heresay because the team wouldn't disclose that info if they didn't have to.

  14. tin,

dont know if you saw this on the SS

(UPDATE: 12:18 p.m. A comprehensive phone and online check by the Sun Sentinel of inmate records in 11 surrounding counties near Cartersville — Bartow, Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Clarke, Cobb, Clayton, Cherokee, Floyd, Douglas and Paulding — as well as the City of Atlanta and Cartersville itself has still turned up no record of a Ronnie Brown being arrested this weekend or any other time.
That doesn’t mean the report isn’t true, but it does mean we need to get confirmation of this and/or see the arrest report for ourselves before jumping to conclusions.
“I’ve been researching this, and we have made no arrests of Ronnie Brown,” Captain Frank Cline of the Cartersville Police Department told me this morning. “I’ve checked with everybody, and nobody in Bartow County has had any contact with Ronnie Brown.”
Captain Cline agreed that any jurisdiction that may have arrested an NFL star of Brown’s caliber should have made a public announcement by now, more than 48 hours after the alleged arrest. He sounded as though he doubted the veracity of the report, which cited two unnamed sources and did not name the location of the arrest or quote from the arrest report.
“I’m totally flabbergasted by it,” said Cline, who has known Brown and followed his career for 15 years, dating to the Dolphin’s days in middle school. “This is a guy who pulled himself up out of a really bad situation, who lived with his coaches during high school to get away from family that did that kind of stuff. He’s worked so hard to get so far. He doesn’t need that kind of mark on him for any reason.”)

so who knows if ronnie did or did not get arrested

  15. Cops should focus on crime ONLY, not traffic voilations.  They miss most of the bad ones anyway.  However, every cop will tell you that's how they catch criminals, with random traffic stops.

I'm from the Chicago, IL area and can't tell you how many times I was harassed as a kid with an old car late at night in a somewhat wealthy town.  I am way less law abiding now but they leave me alone cuz I'm old!

    F tha police!!

  16. Kinda surprised with the Simley trade but I guess we have other options there.  His injuries were a problem but othewise, he was great.  Since I believe we're still 2 years away, I have no problem trading guys for picks this year.  We certainly do better in the draft vs. free agency!

I thought the Ronnie Brown thing was unsubstantiated?  In any event, I don't care but the arrests are starting to pile up and I just don't get why athelets don't pay for a damn taxi!  Hell, call a tow truck and have your car towed and ride with the driver or follow him in your cab.

  22. Tins,

I apologize he's the 2nd richest owner...This is article is based on the numbers from the Forbes 2010 list.  I guess his real estate came back a little bit this year.

"Seahawks owner Paul Allen is #37 on the list with a net worth of  $13.7 billion which makes him the wealthiest NFL owner.
Running a distant second (based on my quick scan of the list) is new Dolphins owner Stephen Ross who checks in at #277 with a net worth of $3.4 billion.
Malcolm Glazer is next at #400, with a net worth of $2.4 billion (tied with Oprah and ahead of Donald Trump who comes in at #488 with a paltry $2.0 billion)
Jerral (aka) Jerry Jones comes in at #556 with $1.8 billion net worth, and a whopper of a note on that new stadium.  "Sold personal seat licenses to die-hard fans during the off-season; used proceeds to help pay $425 million in debt."  We're such suckers, aren't we?  And why is that cheesy 80's video "We're not gonna take it any more" running through my head?
Patriots owner Robert Kraft is #655 on the list with $1.5 billion in net  worth.  By the way, Uncle Drayton is right there with Kraft in the rankings.
Tied with McNair at #721 on the list is Colts owner James Irsay with a net worth of $1.4 billion.
Falcons owner and Home Depot mogul Arthur Blank is #773 on the list with a net worth of $1.3 billion.  They may want to adjust that to $1.243 billion after the Dunta Robinson signing.
Coming in tied at #880 with $1.1 billion in net worth is the man Houstonians love to hate, K.S., (Bud) Adams, Jr.,  (I'll save the editorial comments on that one), Chargers owner Alex Spanos, and Redskins owner Dan Snyder whose free spending ways in free agency seem to have slowed a bit since the arrival of Mike Shanahan.  But maybe that's just a sign of these 'tough times.'
Rounding out the list of NFL owners on the Forbes List of Billionaires is Browns owner Randy Lerner, and Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie who rank #937 with $1.0 billion in net worth.

A team source just told Omar Kelly a few minutes ago that the report is true, and that Dolphins football czar Bill Parcells personally called Smiley on Saturday during an Alabama hunting trip to let him know he shouldn’t bother coming to Monday’s opening of voluntary offseason workouts.

    The primary reasons are three-fold:

    1) Health

    2) Money

    3) Depth

  24. the only problem is knight pulled out his sword but it was one of those fake rubber things and was none threatening to the cop in its limp semi hard shape

  25. Obviously if there is no salary cap the owners could get rid of all their highly paid players but I don't think the Dolphins are going to do that.  Jerry Richardson who is the owner of the Panthers is doing that to a certain degree.

All I'm saying is that Stephen Ross is a super rich guy & he has shown that he's willing to pay "fair-market value" for certain players.  This is an owner that had to sign off on eating all of the guaranteed money that was spent on Gibril after he only paid one season.  IMO--I don't view the possible trade of Smiley as "a cost cutting move," as much as "a moving forward with younger players" decision.

A bit dissappointing, I thought the losses of Renaldo Hill and Andre Goodman, who both played extensively in Denver, might have gotten us at least a 6th rounder...

    ReplyDelete
  30. Well I like all those players but I'd rather use some of our picks and
Smiley to move up and get one of the elite players a la Berry, McClain, or
even Suh. I still think the Rams will draft Suh despite all the media
saying they'll take Bradford. However, if they pass, you know Detroit wants
to get out of the 2nd position. Their best bet of trading down is to do a
multiple trade, switch with Tampa Bay, then trade down a few more spots (I
think we could manage to get to 4th or 5th with a package deal incl. Smiley,
    our 12th and a 6th.

  39. <p><span>It's not really surprising the Dolphins are looking to trade Smiley. He's a great OL but he can't stay healthy and the injuries across the OL have been a constant disruption. OL play is based on continuity and communication. These guys need to play together for an extended period of time in order to learn each other. It seems like we had a revolving door at center and the two guards last year and it never quite came together.</span>
    </p><p><span></span>
</p><p><span>To me, the trade rumor indicates that Smiley’s shoulder is chronic and the Dolphins do not believe he will be able to play for an entire season, let alone be able to be a building block for a stable line. There aren’t too many secrets in the NFL so thinking we can get a 4th rounder for him is probably ambitious. They are dangling him as trade bait during the draft when teams sometimes get a little antsy if they have not filled a hole by around the 4th or 5th round.</span>
    </p><p><span></span>
</p><p><span>It would also seem to indicate they are all in with Richie Incognito. It’s too bad his shoulder cannot hold up because Justin Smiley is one hell of a football player.</span>

    Tins,

IMO--My two favorite players in this draft are 1) Suh & 2) Berry .  Suh is an absolute beast & I can't remember a college player with that kind of size who looked as polished as he does.  As for Berry, well, he looked like he was ready to play in the NFL when he was a Freshman.  When I first saw Berry play a couple of years ago I couldn't believe he was only a Freshman (he was a physical freak) & he was definitely the best player on that defense.  The last player that I can say that looked ready to play in the NFL as a Freshman was Adrian Peterson.

    Tins,

Now will you rescind the comment about Ross not being "money bags???"   It sounds like Parcells has carte blanche to me.  This is from Tim Graham at ESPN.com.

"ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Miami Dolphins have had their share of spending misadventures since Bill Parcells took over football operations nearly 2 1/2 years ago.

We learned Monday morning they're trying to trade left guard Justin Smiley, the player they signed to a five-year, $25 million contract one minute into 2008 free agency. They've already unloaded notable free agents such as safeties Gibril Wilson and Chris Crocker, receiver Ernest Wilford and quarterback Josh McCown.

But when it comes to running football operations, Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross trusts Parcells implicitly.

So completely, in fact, that Ross said Monday he doesn't get involved in even the biggest decisions about his cash.

"I'm putting my money with Bill Parcells and our organization," Ross told a small gathering of reporters during a break in the NFL owners meetings. "Nobody bats 1.000. I just look at the bottom line and end results and where we are and what we're spending. The results are in the won-loss record."

Ross suggested he stood aside two weeks ago, when the Dolphins made Karlos Dansby the NFL's highest-paid inside linebacker with a five-year, $43 million deal.

"Bill tells me beforehand," Ross said. "We have salary caps -- this year we don't, but we still have to live in a financial world today -- and I say 'Hey, what counts is on the field.' That's what he's looking to do: deliver winners.

"I don't try to micromanage him. You can't look at every dollar you spend. One thing I found out: Sports is different than business. From a businessman, when it comes to what you do for paying players, you have to have a little different discipline than you'd otherwise have."

Ross can refrain from meddling because Forbes recently ranked the Manhattan real-estate developer the 277th wealthiest man on the planet with an estimated net worth of $3.4 billion."

  46. It's a pretty simple math equation.  Thousands of dollars for a DUI and suspension plus the wrath of your coach OR call a damn cab!  You have insurance on your car if you leave it or just don't drive.  Though Ronnie's issue sounds more like he only had a few and may get off with nothing.

And thanks for agreeing with me!

  47. I wouldn't view Smiley as a bad FA signing.  Wilford, Wilson & Eric Green, yes.  Crocker didn't cost us that much and McCown was fine at that time and we got something for him.  The truth is FA is no easier than the draft.  Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.
