Training Camp - Day 14 - UPDATED!

Photos by Brian L. (click on photos to enlarge)

Today is another brutal two practice day for the Miami Dolphins. I bet they had a rough day off from practicing, because they probably had to watch film and get reamed in position meetings, etc, and today they have to put up with the heat. One thing I really noticed in retrospect from the Jacksonville game is that despite the downpour and the generally soggy conditions, no one fumbled the ball. Even Ricky, despite his dropped TD, kept the ball off the ground when running the football. One turnover was caused when Chad Henne threw an ill-advised, and ill-aimed pass under pressure, and another was caused when Anthony Kimble tried to catch a wet ball with his jersey and a ricochet ensued. But for a wet, soggy pre-season matchup between two defensive minded teams, I thought we did okay on the turnover side. That's a positive considering how many young, inexperienced players we have.

In leading up to the Carolina game this Saturday, it looks like Johnathan Stewart will not be playing as he has a sore achilles. This pisses me off since I drafted Stewart for my fantasy league. But it does allow us to get more action versus DeAngelo Williams, which is a good thing since we'll see our 2nd string linebackers versus their 1st string RB.

Now the big question for today is if the team will release any players based on the first 2 weeks of camp and their performance in the game. And while it's still early, there are a few free agents out there Miami might be interested in bringing in at this point for evaluation. One thing I do think we'll see is a reorganization of the depth chart. Considering the next game is on Saturday, I think any changes they make will be done immediately (as in today). Also, training camp officially ends tomorrow so there are only 3 more practices under this format.

Put on your GM hats and comment on what actions you would take today.

  • Matt Roth is not practicing yet. Word from Drew Rosenhaus is that he will be soon. As soon as training camp ends, you mean? Drew also said that Yeremiah Bell is one of the most under-rated players in the NFL and he expects Will Allen to have a pro-bowl season.
  • I did say if Roth wasn't practicing by this point, he'd definitely be out of the starting picture. I think it's clear that JT is ready to assume that role (not that he ever wasn't starting caliber), but if Roth can't get on the field by this time next week, I'd start to be very doubtful he even makes the 53 man-roster. At the very best he could hope to be put on the PUP which would make him ineligible for the first 6 weeks of the season. I like Roth a lot, like most fans, but it's been nearly 3 weeks. If we get up to week four, at some point you have to ready the team for the season and that means giving someone else a shot. However this works out, the narrowing down of the 53 man roster is just getting harder and harder every day..
  • Donald Thomas HAS been elevated back to being the starting Right Guard. Shawn Murphy is second string for now.
  • MORNING PRACTICE VIDEO:

  • The Dolphins have released cornerback, Eric Green. This is where I say I told you so. Told you Green wouldn't make the team, much less start. And for all you doubters, this pretty much locks up Jason Allen to make the team, which would be two I told you so moments all at once, but I felt guilty just saying it the first time, so I'll let the second one go. ;)

Yea I've already seen some cuts. I think it was Bob Griese who mentioned during the game that Jeff Ireland has scouts at every game and they're keeping an eye on players they had on their draft board and some rookie free agents they liked.

I'm not sure anything big happens today but the depth chart may take on a little bit different look. Like putting Donald Thomas as 1st team RG for good and get the top 5 to start building chemistry because that's what they need more than anything else. The talent is there for us to have a very good OL.

  2. Eric Green is an embarrassment to the AFC EAST CHAMPION MIAMI DOLPHINS

Green sucked on  the Cards ,watched the SB from the sidelines,  had a miserable camp and stunk up the field against a bad nfl team in the passing game
Green was a despearation pick off season
Rip the jersey off his back and get rid of him quick
    No hard feelings
Green will still make more money than U or I for getting free off season conditioning and not playing

Also time to shop Wilford(now he is worth more) London(no room, he will never get a chance to play anyway and return specialist Little Chris Williams is the new front runner for WR pick # 6)
Jason Allen is worth shopping around, but I would lean on keeping him if possible
Not sold on rookie garbage glory grabbing  CBs yet
Need to see more,  but unfortunately Dolphins are playing scruby struggling QBs in preseason game 2 and 3
Game 4 will see very little if any Drew Brees and starters

This will give Rook CBs a false sense of their abilities at start of regular season
Only for the goofball sean and perhaps others to get smoked and exposed when they face the Real NFL QB

  3. I disagree about the 3rd game vs Tampa Bay, we'll get to see how our DBs
adjust to plpaying against 15 different QBs in one game...

  4. I see better talent on the offensive line, but I don't think they measures up to teams like the vikings, Jets, Panthers, Steelers, and about 6 or 7 more teams.  Now that is a great improvement over 2 years ago for sure, but of the players we now have as a group the talent of the top teams in the league ?  I hope so.

One thing for sure the trifecta are still churning this team, from what Ireland said.

I haven't seen much talk about how the special teams played Monday night other than Williams but they looked really good.

  5. Tin do you think that matt roth has any tarde value, we have jason taylor and cameron wake.  If the dolphins get atleast a 3rd round pick for him they should let him go

    ReplyDelete
  6. The Steelers? They Steelers had a lousy line last year. The Giants should
be on that list as well as the Titans but the Steelers line blew chunks.

    ReplyDelete
  7. One thing I noticed is that not once did one of our gunners make the tackle
on a return. Still, we didn't give up a lot of ST yards, so it's
    progressing.

  8. Not while he's injured. You can't trade someone who can't pass a physical.
If he were healthy I'd try to get two picks for him like a 4th and a 6th.

    ReplyDelete
  9. yea when he gets healthy, not bad getting two picks from him.  We can use the 4th to draft a olb or a de to convert to olb. Because of right now jayson taylor and cameron wake can get the job done at that position

We're not going to release Matt Roth. He's injured, he didn't do anything to get cut. He still has time to get up to speed but it has to be soon or he will end up on the PUP. He will come in handy as the season progresses and when Porter and JT slow down a bit and they will. They can't escape their age. Both Wake and Roth will be needed.

I'm not getting too crazy about the first preseason game. Every year people make too much of it because that's all we have. Once the season starts no one even thinks about the preseason, especially the first game.

We'll have a better feel for who will make the team after the 3rd preseason game. The 4th game will be for a few players on the bubble and to determine the final depth chart.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I know this sound totally Homerish, but I would package as many picks as it
took to get George Selvie. It's not like we need to save a 2nd rounder to
draft another QB...or do we? lol. It all depends on how the draftees of
the last two years develop this season, but we might be heading into next
year's draft without a huge shopping list, especially after the free agency
    period.
I think next year we will double down on linebackers and running backs (i
know this is way in the future speculation). I don't see the Ronnie and
Ricky dynasty lasting forever, so they'll need to work on replacements, and
at the same time, despite the logjam we have right now at OLB, if Roth isn't
around (and at this point I wouldn't extend him), and with JT and JP
possibly hanging it up around 2010, that area will suddenly be quite thin,
even with Wake, Walden, Anderson, etc.
I think we'll be set at WR, QB, TE, DB, DL and OL. I would expect to bring
in camp bodies but not spend a high draft pick on any of those positions.
Plus, i think there's still a chance we land Crabtree....;)

    ReplyDelete
  13. I didn't mean we'd release him, but if he's not good to go soon he will have
to on the PUP and then possibly on IR, but it is his contract year and they
won't extend him if he's on IR.

Tin, do you think Selvie is more of a 4-3 DE or do you feel he can convert to 3-4 OLB?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Well. Selvie plays for my alma-mater, USF. He could've come out after his
red-shirt sophomore year and been a top ten pick. Here are his stats:
2006, after converting from Center to DE:
64 tackles, 16 for loss, 6 sacks, 3 Forced Fumbles and 1 fumble recovery
    taken back for a TD.
2007, after one year of experience as a defensive player:
58 tackles, 32 for loss, 15 sacks, 3 forced fumbles and a blocked kick.
2008, he suffered an ankle injury in the middle of the season, missed a game
and played sparingly in the following three games. He was regularly
    triple-teamed before that:
42 tackles, 15 for loss, 7 sacks, 1 forced fumble and 5 passes defensed.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Why does everyone put words in my mouth. I said he might not be in the TOP
    of the 1st round.
There's some pretty big names coming out next year.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think he'd actually be better and have bigger numbers as a weakside LB in
a 3-4. He's 6'4" 245lbs. He's not going to play DE for anybody in the NFL.

    ReplyDelete
  30. i heard Patrick Turner didn't have a good game - i didn't see it - do you guys think he'll still make the team?

    ReplyDelete
  31. The Knight who says Ni!August 19, 2009 at 10:21 AM

Ooops... my bad. But you actually said: "We could get a steal as he probably wouldn't guy in the top of
the 1st round". I don't know how to guy so you'll have to fill us in on that one. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  32. The Knight who says Ni!August 19, 2009 at 10:22 AM

Well maybe the Colts, they like their DEs extremely small. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  33. ok, I can get myself out of this one.....hmm...guy is also a wire/rope used
to secure something in place, so what I was suggesting was that he probably
wouldn't secure himself the high draft position.
    Ta-Da!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. The first dress rehearsal (preseason) showed the same offensive tendencies as the final game last year did; the inability to run inside. The line play picked up with Thomas, but neither Ronnie nor Ricky could get it going inside. Now, I realize that it's early, so I will say that I will continue to evaluate.

Tin, I agree that the rb position should be looked at in the next draft. Ricky's getting old(er) and Ronnie looked like he was auditioning for dancing with the stars last year.

    canamdolphin

    ReplyDelete
  35. He's not small, but he has a Jason Taylor-like body. His first step is the
best I've ever seen though, and that includes JT. With experience and
proper coaching he could be a huge star in the NFL. He's a really good guy
too, no issues at all off the field.

  36. The Knight who says Ni!August 19, 2009 at 10:35 AM

    ReplyDelete

  40. I dunno about that, he's going to sit on his ass for a year and not have any
buzz around him. Then you have to factor in Dez Bryant and Aurellius Benn.
Plus Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy, Tim Tebow, N. Suh, maybe Selvie, etc

    ReplyDelete
  41. no, i think I saw him play in the superbowl and that was about it. Once
again, i said fastest that I, me, tinshaker, has seen. lol

    ReplyDelete
  42. Well look at it this way, Daniel, he was graded as top five pick in 2008,
and as a late 4th rounder in 2009. several players dropped in the 1st round
this year, think Maualuga, and Vontae Davis, etc. Plus, according to both
Parcells and Ireland, if there's a guy they MUST have, they will not
hesitate to trade up for him.
They tried to trade up this year but couldn't get any takers for their
    offer.

That's too bad. One of the best plays was watching LT chase RBs from behind the line of scrimmage. The back would have no idea he was that close and he would trip them up before they got to the line of scrimmage. He must have done that 100 times in his career.

    W. Allen
    Smith
    Davis
    Jones
    J. Allen
    Thomas
    Billingsley

    Probably only 5 make it.

Good call with today's blog asking about what do you think will happen today as far as cuts and playing GM. I agree this helps Jason Allen. What I do like about Jason is his size, speed, athletic ability and he can tackle. Can he consistently play the right technique and cover is the question he has to answer.

week. What a maroon...super cocky, great practice player, but awful on game

I know Allen wasn't starting but he played exclusively at safety in that
game. Nate Jones was the nickel corner. But I'm sure they said they were
moving him to corner full-time BEFORE that....why don't we just admit he's a
good tweener and let him play both positions depending on the need?

  96. My gut is telling me Roth is going to get traded.  He's got to be healthy by now doesn't he?  As a resident of the "Hawkeye State" I would love to see him stay, but this seems really suspicious.

  100. No way he goes top ten if he sits out the season...what GM in his right mind would voluntarily sign up for the same ridiculous sideshow the niners are now experiencing? Top ten picks are far to valuable to take a chance you might not get the player signed and gain nothing from that draft slot.

FWIW though, he is NOT (I guarantee this one..and how many "guarantees" have you seen me make?) going to re-enter the draft next year...he'll sign w/ the niners (or have his rights traded to some other team) before that would happen.

  101. Uh, there's more to Haiku than leaving out the punctuation. Also, pronoun use is not limited in Haiku. Also, Haiku follows a very distinct syllabic pattern.

Guess you're not so poetic Narcissus!

  102. Don't expect too much from this kid's agent/cousin, etc. On this week's
Hard Knocks, the Bengals were trying to negotiate a deal for Andre Smith and
you should've heard the 'agent' on the other end of the phone. he sounded
like he was negotiating from a street corner in the hood.
