Training Camp 2009 - Day One

I'm not going to attempt to compete with any of the big boys but the blog is open today for discussion in between tweets/updates from the beat reporters.

First up, JD Quinn and Jared Bronson were the two casualties of the 80 man limit. While I'm surprised Quinn was let go instead of a cornerback, I haven't exactly been a fan of his (does this party-boy have what it takes to play in the NFL? My guess is no, and the fact no ones heard a peep about this kid since OTAs started does not bode well ~ June 18th) and am glad he's no longer with the team. Bronson was a favorite of sorts to be released because of the logjam at tight end.

This means guys like Courtney Bryan and Will Billingsley and Joey Thomas will live to fight another day. I have to say I find the sheer numbers at CB a bit unsettling. It could hurt the number of reps allowed to the two rookies, although I would suspect there will be a lot of spread offense being run, and they will need a lot of dime packages running through camp.

Andy Alleman, Greg Camarillo, and Donald Thomas are in pads, but Thomas is said not to be doing team drills. Still, it's a step in the right direction. Matt Roth, however, is apparently hurt somehow and is doing sideline drills. Meanwhile, Shawn Murphy is lining up with the starters at RG. Camarillo also lined up with starters.

I guess the team restricts how long the reporters can 'blog/tweet' for, so all the reports ended suddenly.
So if there are any readers out there, please e-mail any interesting observations and photos to tinshaker@gmail.com so they can be shared with everyone, thanks.

Sean Smith and Vontae Davis with second team, Eric Green with the first team. Jason Taylor was starting in place of Roth.

Day One Highlights:

So it appears Matt Roth is 'under the weather' and failed his conditioning test and Omar Kelly reported that he looked thin. I'd like to believe that this simply means he has the summer flu and couldn't handle the heat or run laps, etc, but the fact Omar said he looked thin before finding out he wasn't practicing, suggest he's been ill for a while. I hope it's nothing serious, fingers crossed at the moment. However, if he cannot practice for an extended period, it could change the landscape of the OLB competition completely.

Per Edgar Thompson, Paul Soliai weighed in at 340 lbs.

Coach Sparano:

So that's that, Jared Bronson just didn't show up to camp. It wasn't excused, so he's done.

I think after a week or two we could see a corner released. The trifecta probably wants to see these corners one more time before making any decisions.

  2. Yeah, like that orondegadsden guy said, the Bronson listing doesn't mean he's not on the team, but just doesn't count towards the active 80.  So it's still possible he could come back and a corner could get cut.

What's the deal with Bronson, does anyone know the details?

  4. YEAHHHH,Alleman's BAACCKK(hope it's 100%)!!!

Wayyyy back when,I figured CBryan would be one of the 1st released...

ANY NEWS on PW's #,or why can't I comprehend the reason for standing PAT???
A WHITE 1 is all it takes,to get PW on the field more often!!

  5. ...log jam at db, olb, and wr ...I think we might see some warm body vets released early so they can get a shot elsewhere and Sparano gets a longer look at some of the newer churn ...I also expect that at least one OLB will be tried at ILB where some fresh blood would be welcome imnsho ...I'm still not a Torbor fan.

...as for Bronson the slots at TE are pretty set ...and they'll probably prefer to keep a LB for ST rather than a TE ...whether he reports or not, it doesn't look good for him

  6. i would think its close to 100% since he's with the 2nd team

  7. can't disagree with that

  9. NEVERMIND,my dumbass figured it out!! Just hit update,(tried that b/4)but it didn't take.. Got it now!!

  10. you enter in your 'tweets' in the textbox at the top, and it appears to all
your followers but should also appear to you, If you want to see your
tweets only, you have to click your name at the top right of the side bar,
i.e. under where the word 'Settings' is.

  12. for the record, Cam Wake looks pretty strong to me. wtf is Wilford doing
    wearing winter gear?

  13. TS said JT ALREADY has shown"FLASH"..
He's GONNA play more than SOME initially estimated,IMHO!!
ALOT MORE,(and that thought come's from witnessing his ENTIRE CAREER w'"OUR"FINS)!!!

I'm more than willing to forgive him for DWtS,(his ONE F'up IMHO!!)   GO JT,GO DOLPHINS!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yea,TS said that ONLY 4 or 5 are gonna get substantial reps,
(8 on the roster)so Thomas, and Billingsly aren't likely to stick for long,
that'd leave 6(meaning Green or Jones)won't be too far behind..
(UNLESS JAllen gets traded),HOPE NOT!! SF lost their starter for the yr this wk!!
(Can't recall his name),long time vet.. Will ??

Sound's as though TS's TC rep routine resembles Bill Walsh's 1st qtr gameplan,
Set in stone,NO waivering,no matter the down and distance(15-20 plays)..

    Though early,according to Coach(PW IMPRESSIVE),buzzer didn't phase him!!
Apparently MY OL roster will need shuffeling,w'the MURPHY emergence,
but they may just be attempting to instill confidence..
ONE yr ago(give or take a couple mnths),we couldn't bye an OLineman,
NOW we have tooo many,LIFE IS GOOD!!!

  15. Above reply was supposed to go under KNIGHT's initial thought's!!

    ReplyDelete
  16. SF lost WALT Harris, but they have ELEVEN CB's on thier roster!! So JA apparently won't be going there!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. ...never was a question that JT would "flash" ...the question with him is stamina over the long haul and can he still consistently physically outplay much younger players.

...murphy is following up with his ota showing ...maybe we have that starting quality bu ol emerging after all.

...I still think JA is trade bait despite the fan club here ...he has to dominate to win a roster spot at cb and he's not done that in three years.

  18. What is it with the phrase "I mean..."!

Before anything is said, so many interviewees start out saying "I mean..." in answer to a question.

Please, enough already! Say what you mean, and mean what you say!

Sparano must have used that phrase a half-dozen times during the course of the interview.

I know it's nitpicky. Let the games begin so we can see what he means!

So they're not in full pads, they're in helmets and shells but wearing shorts so it's still not full contact football yet.

Matt Roth apparently has an illness and a groin issue again. Damn!

Soliai weighing in at 340 is good news. Sparano had said months ago he wanted Soliai in the 345 range so he came in 5 lbs. less than that.

  21. the players do it too (Ted Ginn starts every sentence that way), you know
how it is, a small group of people get together, they start picking up each
other's vocabulary and speech patterns. But don't ever watch any football
coach interview if you can't deal with repetition! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  22. "Camarillo was holding for long snapper Jason Taylor"
Do you mean he was standing where the punter would be?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah I had read somewhere that JT could long snap. That could free up another position to keep an extra LB, OL, or DB.

    Man the season has begun!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. The Knight who says Ni!August 3, 2009 at 7:39 AM

JT is the backup long-snapper. Someone has to do it. They're not going to have JT as the full-time LS when his main role is being a pass rusher, and now that Roth's role is uncertain at this time, there is even a lesser chance of that.

    ReplyDelete
  25. That is very true. It could be a little "roster flexability" that TS always talks about. I doubt he would do it full time though. You would think that one of those centers could do it. With all of the money they get they should have to LS also.

    ReplyDelete
  26. It's supposedly a hard transition for a Center to long snap. Maybe they're
just not bright enough to make the adjustments...

    ReplyDelete
  27. The Knight who says Ni!August 3, 2009 at 8:07 AM

Ralph, think about a center running down the field trying to make tackles on a punt returner. That's why the LS is usually a guy built more like a LB, DE or TE. The guy has to be a little quicker and more athletic than an O-lineman. John Denney was a DE in college and is 6-5 255. You don't want 300 pounders as your LS.

    ReplyDelete
  28. LOL. I worked with a guy that played guard at Central Mich. He told me that he LS and it was only because those guys practiced snaps while the rest of the team ran.

  29. Yes I do see your point and it is very valid. Which may support JT serving as a LS.
