Training Camp - Day Two

Well we made it through the first day without any major contradictions from the media, but first thing today Edgar Thompson said there were 2,000 fans this morning ahead of the media, but then said 'ok, less than 1,000.' I suppose it's ok when he corrects himself shortly after making the mistake.

Yesterday was an interesting day more for what happened on the sidelines than on the field. The Matt Roth mystery injury and the huge fan turnout were the big stories. As we get on in this thing (see, canamdolphin, these cliches are contagious) the action on the field should take over the spotlight.

Early reports from the first of two practices today:
  • Pat White is throwing much better today - it should be noted he seemed improved yesterday, according to reports, as well.
  • Justin Smiley is excused today to give birth to his already named to the media son, Jett.
  • Matt Roth is not in attendance today. I would expect he's inside getting medical attention or resting.
  • Vontae Davis's contract numbers have been officially released, 5 years, $10.25 million with a guaranteed $7.4 million.
  • The Depth Chart on the sidebar has been updated to reflect the current line-up and practicing roles.
  • Pads are on, and Omar Kelly is 'feeling' Cam Wake, who came close to 2 sacks.
  • Sounds like Fasano is struggling a bit today, having one pass broken up and another picked off right in front of him.
  • Per Kelly, Vernon Carey pancaked Charlie Anderson, Eric Green is still starting, Donald Thomas is working to the side, Turner and London are paired together (I expect 3rd team), and the guys fielding punts are Ginn, Bess, Hartline and Chris Williams.

Morning Practice Video:

  • I'm a bit disappointed in the media still focusing 100% on the known players. I want to know what's up with Louis Ellis, JD Folsom, Orion Martin, Joe Cohen, etc. The only nose anyone's talked about is Soliai. Did Ferguson et al just take the last two days off?
  • In that video, Pennington's passes looked a bit wonky, to be honest. Apparently the offenses struggled today, I wonder if there were swirling winds?
  • And it's official, the media has gone crazy for Matt Roth's groin. They are completely obsessed. I'm willing to give the guy at least 2 days before I start calling him a liar.
  • In Jets camp, everyone was fighting everyone. Apparently Rex Ryan was grinning from ear to ear during his press conference afterwards. Is it really possible for the Jets to be less likable than they already were?
  • The DolFAN Bandits and Channing Crowder make for one heck of a scary photo, but these guys are great fans and have some training camp photos up at their site.

  • Matt Roth is in attendance at the afternoon practice inside the bubble, but isn't dressed for practice. Update: Berardino states that Roth is doing stretches

  • Local genius, Armando Salguero, just tweeted that Justin Smiley is still excused from practice. Ah, he must be such a family man!
  • Per Berardino: Donald Thomas is dressed and doing individual work with other o-linemen."Per Omar Kelly: "Sean Smith slapped down a pass to Ted Ginn during 1-on-1s, and showed he has the speed to keep up with the speedster.

I would think if Justin Smiley is giving birth today he won't be ready to play football for quite some time.  :-E

The Matt Roth situation is annoying. I hope it's not something long-term.

    5. ESPN reported over 3000 fans in the stands yesterday. 1000, 2000, and 3000. You have to love reporters. LOL

Congrads out to Justin and his family.

It is great to hear that PW is throwing better. What is all of this TG throwing stuff? Could we have ANOTHER weapon?

    6. Everywhere I saw yesterday reported the turnout at something like 3100 to
3200. Only 2000 of those are allowed in, the other thousand or so either
stood in the parking garage, or outside the fence looking in. At one point
the dolphins took down some banners or something off the fence so fans could
see in. So far today Edgar has said 2000, less than 1000, and now on his
      blog it says over 1000.
I think the Ted Ginn throwing thing is more experimenting, and also
obviously they want to get Ginn in on the Wildcat and trick plays. They had
Camarillo, Cobbs, and Ricky throwing in OTAs. It makes perfect sense to me,
get everyone thinking Pat White is the only passer in the formation, so when
the ball gets handed off to Ginn, the defense slides towards him, but
instead of an end-around, he tosses the ball to a man downfield.

    7. oops, not supposed to mention that kind of strategy stuff, am I? ;)

      ReplyDelete
    8. It is briliant to have so many players that can throw the ball. The defense will have to hesitate and that is all it takes.

On a side note do you think that TG still has nightmares about the Ray Lewis hit on the Pick 6 in the playoff game? I will give TG props from getting up as fast as he did.

Ted Ginn played QB in high school. He also took some direct snaps at Ohio State and ran some draws. Not sure if he attempted any passes. But I knew he could throw it a little bit. Ricky and Cobbs can also throw.

    10. I think Ginn has a recurring nightmare where, he's back to return a punt, he
catches the ball off it's twelfth bounce, then makes a beeline to the
sideline, setting up a wall before cutting back and taking the return all
the way to the house. The crowd cheers and he feels on top of the world.
Then he turns around and sees Charlie Anderson holding his arms up in a
'W'. Then Ginn wakes up in a cold sweat....

    12. 3,000 fans yesterday.  1,000 including kids from camps today.  Edgar needs to speicify which day he is reporting on.  From what I've heard second hand Carey looks slim and is a beast pushing people around at will.  Solai looks like a bull and rountinely made Grove look like Satele.  Not sure if thats good news or bad...

      LOL, NOT!

      ReplyDelete
    14. well they like to say that the defense is always ahead of the offense at
this point, but I don't see why that would pertain to the o-line. But then
again you have to factor in that in a game, the center would rarely be going
up one on one on a nose tackle, so the one-one drills can be a bit deceptive
as far as the interior goes, but it's much more demonstrative for the
      Tackles.

Tin, it's the same with WRs beating the DBs on long bombs. There are basic coverages but no real game planning. These guys need that one-on-one work though because that will make everyone better in the long run. The results are misleading though.

      ReplyDelete
    16. That's why they have pre-season games. Also, while the media has been quick
to bash Cam Wake, don't you think his athleticism would be a huge advantage
in a game situation as opposed to lining up in front of a tackle in practice
in one on ones? These reporters don't seem to know that a pass rusher
doesn't line up directly over tackle...

    17. The Knight who says Ni!August 3, 2009 at 9:28 AM

Ted Ginn did in fact attempt two passes his junior year at Ohio State and was 1-2 for a 38 yard TD.

      ReplyDelete
    18. I saw that pass, i think there's a youtube video of it...

Agreed and centers usually don't block NTs by themselves. Regardless of Jake Grove's strength and leverage, it's not a surprise to me that Soliai would give him problems one-on-one. Soliai is huge, strong and athletic. He has 40 lbs. on Grove.

    21. In the age of 24 hr sports news it doesn't surprise me at all the this Roth thing is getting unwarranted pub.  Just nothing sexy to talk about.  I wish Rosenpus would just shut his....  the guy is in love with seeing himself on camera al a his #1 T.O.  Does it surprise anyone that all the contraversial info has come from him?

Wings wrote some really great songs. Not everything but some of it was well done.

I don't get offended if people dislike certain music, it's all personal taste. I think 90% of the new music out there now blows major ass!  >:o

    44. Just got confirmation! I am going to Opening day game in Atlanta.  My wife's uncle's company has a box and he is getting us in!   I can't wait! Never seen a game in Atlanta before or from a "box".  It will be really cool regardless.  I'm psyked! Now if I can get Tuesday, Sept 22nd off of work I'll be going to our opening Home game too.  The games go waaaay too late with getting out of the stadium and parking lot and driving the hour (two hours in dolphins traffic) home for me to go to Monday night games. I already have club level seats from a sub-contractor if I want them.  Just gotta get Tuesday off.  Whoooo HOOOOOO! The Season is here!

    45. Way to go, Rockphin! I went to a game in Atlanta back in the mid 90s and

That's terrific when a city lures it's fans to a stadium in the worst neighborhood in their city. Unreal!

      ReplyDelete
    48. Well to be fair, 90% of Atlanta at that time was like that. Back then only
Buckhead was considered safe, but it's ultra-trendy/expensive as well.
Everyone else fled to the far-away-suburbs.
The problem with stadiums and arenas that are downtown is that they only
'manicure' their grounds, and pay no attention to the surrounding area. As
charitable as a team/stadium owner can be, they never donate time or money
to the neighborhood that all the fans have to drive/walkthrough.

      ReplyDelete
    49. Well athough it's not that bad look at where the Marlins new Stadium is going to be.  DUMB !!

    52. Up here in Michigan the Wings, Lions and Tigers play in downtown Detroit. It is crazy on game days/nights, there are so many cops just trying to keep the peace and make the surburban-ites feel safe until they can get out of the city.

JJ was a GREAT college coach, and GOOD NFL coach until his college recruits had all been drafted..
Which UNFORTUNATELY happened to be around the time he came to us,or shortly thereafter..
DON'T get me wrong, luv'd JJ too and would have been very pissed had we replaced SHULA w'anyone else!!
But didn't like the way he attempted to erase the past,or his lack of respect to DS!!

But TONY is just REAL!! GREAT ORGANIZATION,TEAM,PLYR,FAN,and MEDIA PERSONALITY!!
In his FIRST yr,he's already ahead of the BEST coach in FINS history's pace of 10 W's per,(though he won't do it for 35 yrs).. I'll take 100+ W's in 10 yrs,w'a team that'll be FAR SUPERIOR to last yrs scrapheap,or any team we've fielded since RW's unscheduled retirement!!      GO TONY,GO TONY!!  GOFINS!!
