Tin Bits - Friday, 4/2/10

• In site news, I have added a page at the top of the screen to keep tabs of the pre-draft visits by draft prospects - I've got it arranged by position, more or less, and it also includes the confirmed players who will be at the local pro day. Last year several of our rookie camp UDFA invitees came out of this group, but this year, a legitimate draft target in UM's Jimmy Graham will be attending. The Dolphins probably didn't intend to spend a high draft pick on Graham but his stock has soared in the last month or so to the point some boards have him as a 2nd round pick.
• Looking at the visitor list, it's obvious that Miami has brought in just about every potential first round pick that they hadn't already seen in person (Dan Williams and Brandon Graham were at the Senior Bowl). They've also brought in two potential Pat White replacements in Edwards and Webb, though both have been working out both as QBs and WRs.
• Chad Henne recently said he came back to Dolphins' home base in Davie at the end of January, essentially only taking a couple of weeks off. Don't worry though, he'll get most of May and all of July off.
• If you haven't figured it out by now, the Marco Coleman interview was an April Fool's Day joke. It never happened. I do know a Katrina, but not the one who's married to him, and I have no idea if he attends Georgia Tech games or not - I made it all up. Absolutely no one caught on. "L.O.L.!" However, here's a great photo of Marco patting down Jim Kelly.
• Ricky Williams arranged a Easter Meal giveaway and got a dozen Dolphins players to hand out full ready-made meals to some of the fattest, er, I mean poorest South Florida families so they could gorge, er, I mean enjoy a proper Easter meal - probably some syrup-glazed ham with macaroni and cheese or something equally representative of Jesus' ascension. I'm all in favor of helping to feed the needy, but other than a handful of people in these pictures, who actually look like they may not own a refrigerator to hold the ham, most of the people getting these free meals look to be about 300 lbs and/or quite middle class. There's one guy wearing a Dolphins polo shirt that probably cost more than the ham did. And he was 50 lbs overweight. Anyway, the Dolphins official website didn't have the decency to mention all the players by name, so I will here, based on who I see in the photos: Ricky Williams, John Denney, Tyler Thigpen, John Nalbone, Jake Long, Davone Bess, Greg Camarillo, Vernon Carey, Patrick Cobbs, Nate Ness, Richie Incognito, Lousaka Polite, and Tristan Davis.
• And now that I've been so snide about a charity event, I would like to say I wish you all the best weekend, regardless of your religious beliefs, and I thank the Dolphins players who sacrifice their free time (Fridays are non-workout days for the Dolphins) to go hand out food. It's more than most of us would do. I would suggest to any readers who feel charitable to go hand out some food to the poor, but may I suggest roasted Rabbit instead of a ham - it's so much more apropos, and I think there's a lot less sodium in a rabbit.

1. Making up articles about players who's opinions are irrelevant, is not a great way of making friends. Remember the whole bit on how "I'm shy and need friends"...

Well I'm a huge Dolphan too, and I don't like for my time to be wasted.

4. Dallas just released 29 yr old FS Ken Hamlin!!!
I've alway's liked him,and hoped for him whenever he was a FA,Wasn't he a BP regime draftee???

Of all the potential Dolphins to fake an interview with why did you choose Marco Coleman??? I thought it was an odd choice but you did a great job of selling it with the Michael Johnson & Derrick Morgan comparisons. LOL!!!

13kv,

I like Hamlin too & he's perfect as a stopgap at FS before a younger player emerges. BTW--He was drafted by the Seahwaks.

ReplyDelete
7. I chose him because he was the 12th overall pick in 1992 out of Georgia Tech, and the connection to 2010's draft. I also wanted to choose someone who was out of the limelight and was well-known enough to warrant an article, yet not famous enough where some twitter feed automaton would pick up on it and tuen it into a national story.

For the record, if it was April Fools WEEK, I definitely would've laid out the Chuck Klingbeil story - I had it all in my head.

8. Coleman was before your time as a Dolfan but he had a pretty good stint in Washington - he made the pro-bowl there. In Miami he was a solid player but after a stellar rookie season, his fame was overshadowed by other players at the time like Brian Cox, Troy Vincent, Dwight Hollier, Jeff Cross, J.B. Brown, and Louis Oliver. We used to have a pretty sick defense - or I should say we had the players, but maybe not the best team defense.

Does anyone here remember that one time that JB Brown intercepted a pass with his left ear?

Tins,

Nice job. I'm probably dreaming but if Bryant is available do you think there's anyway we actually take him??? If not, it might not be such a bad idea to pretend to be in love with Bryant when we're about to pick & try to work a trade.

ReplyDelete
10. I also chose Coleman cuz it needed to sound believable - if I had said I got an exclusive interview with Bill Parcells, no one would've believed me!

ReplyDelete
11. I'm generally of the opinion that Miami will either go Williams or Graham
with the 12th pick if they can't move up.
The more I think about it, the more the whole Michigan/Miami connection
comes into play. We have familial ties there and Graham fits a need that
was witnessed up close by the Dolphins at the Senior Bowl (where I have to
say Graham came across as pretty classy as well as dominant physically).
And the Trifecta did not host Jake Long, Vontae Davis, or Brandon Graham.
Coincidence? maybe.

ReplyDelete
12. THANX WHP,well I guess that lessens the auto-matic acquisition of his services by BP!!!
Was BP Dallas' HC when KH was drafted, and was BP Dallas' HC when they pkd'up KH???

Guess I could look myself,but my pc's only good for a half-hour @ a time these days!!
THANX AGAIN!!

13. Isn't the point of an April Fools joke supposed to make readers believe something foolish just because it comes from a respected source and is presented just as something real would be? Maybe I'm a true fool but I can't see anything in that "interview" that can objectively be considered as ridiculous -- it all seems like something the real Marco Coleman might say. Your joke seems pointless.

16. I was real curious abou the whole interview and how you were able to get it. Now I know. Great sell. I see the humor in it...YOU GOT ME! I still have Marco's rookie card and always expected more after his rookie season. It was the first dolphins draft I followed. I was 11, geesh I'm showin my age! I fell in love with Marino and the phins pasing game when I was 8. Boy how the Phins have changed.

17. So DWilliam's hasn't visited yet either,is he scheduled to meet??
(POSSIBLY NOT a Coincidence),keep'em guess'n,we'll know for sure after 4-22-10)!!!
Can't remember,is the Senior Bowl East-to-West or Nrth-to-Sth??
The actual question is,was DWilliam's""witnessed up close""from the FINS REGIME side too(W'BGraham)??

I'd AGREE, ""either William's or Graham"",have from day-one,but I'd throw-in McC ahead of them!!
@LEAST that's my 1st 3 of 6 scenario's!!
DAMMITT McC visited, DRATS,LOL!!!

CAN'T go wrong w'any of those 3,although I'm not personally POSITIVE DW can NOSE-UP(cup half full),
and OUR OLB positional requirement's can be had throughout the draft!!
BUT BGraham seems pretty special according to what we need(though borderline OLB speed),IMHO!!
I'd THROB over any of the 3 in the teens to go along w'an extra 3rd rndr!!!

Also agree that the regime like's to deal w'particular NCAA teams/prospects,
Michigan,Clemson,(sure CH & JL had some nice info to add to the BGraham analysis)!! GOFINS!!

ReplyDelete
18. Being able to say that you pulled one over on me isn't saying much Tin! But good job anyway....Got a debate going about Dorin Dickerson...buddy told me that Dorin worked out at WR at the Senior Bowl but was unimpressive, but he doesn't know where he heard it. Did you hear anything?

ReplyDelete
19. dont think brandon graham will be on miamis board! he doesnt meet the size requirements for a parcells 3-4 olb! he's more of a 4-3 guy! derrick morgan meets size requirements but i fear he will be gone!

taking safety at 12 (e thomas) i dont think is possible either, they wont take a low value position that high! best case scenario we trade down and pick up another early round selection!

ReplyDelete
20. We Have PlaymakersApril 3, 2010 at 12:16 PM

Tins,

Without seeing him play, Graham does fit some of the Parcells' criteria based on his production & playing at a big school. In addition he played all four seasons @ Michigan just like Long & Henne so who knows??? If he's a better prospect than Kindle, I think it's a mistake if it comes down to their protypical measurables. If his skills are truly comparable to Lamarr Woodley & I honestly don't know if they are than Parcells would be wise to take him.

On that note of familiarity with schools, it should be interesting if Benn from Illinois is still on the board with our 2nd pick. I mean, who knows this guy better than Vonte???

ReplyDelete
21. We Have PlaymakersApril 3, 2010 at 12:22 PM

The other Big Ten WR to watch is definitely Decker.

In this case,IMHO it ain't the meat (ONE INCH), it's the motion...
It's been said by the ""EXPERTS"" consensus that DMorgan is LIKELY ONLY a DE,(no swivel to his stick)...
However,I respect your thought's and what do the EXPERTS know anyway's!!
DMorgan would be hard to pass-up,even IFFF he does end-up only being a sackmaster DE,
but unless he can play the HYBRID position,we have a multitude of down DE types already,IMHO!!!

BGraham is (ONE INCH) shorter and 3 lbs heavier while faster, more mobile and stronger than DMorgan!!
However,I'm not YET completly sold on BGraham @12/OLB either, but I like him in the teens to go w'an xtra 3rd!!
GOFINS!!

Baja California quake estimate raised to magnitude 7.2 by The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Seismologists have raised the preliminary magnitude of an earthquake in northern Baja California from 6.9 to 7.2.

U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Lucy Jones says the new magnitude of the 3:40 p.m. Sunday earthquake is still an estimate.

The quake centered south of California's border with Mexico was widely felt, swaying buildings as far away as San Diego, Los Angeles and Arizona.

52. The 7.2-magnitude quake struck at 3:40 p.m. in Baja California in Mexico, about 19 miles southeast of Mexicali, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was initially reported as a magnitude-6.9 quake. The updated magnitude was still an estimate, according to USGS seismologist Lucy Jones.
"It's been quite a while since we've had an earthquake this large," Jones said. "The last time we had an earthquake this large in either Baja or California was in 1992 with the Landers Earthquake, which was 7.3."
The area was hit by magnitude-3.0 quakes all week, but the 7.2-magnitude quake was felt as far north as Santa Barbara, USGS seismologist Susan Potter said..
The USGS reported three strong aftershocks within the hour, including a magnitude-5.1 jolt in the Imperial County desert east of San Diego. Magnitude-4.5 and magnitude-4.3 aftershocks were also reported.
Strong shaking was reported in the Coachella Valley and Riverside. The earthquake rattled buildings on the west side of Los Angeles and in the San Fernando Valley, interrupting Easter dinners. Chandeliers swayed and wine jiggled in glasses.
In San Diego, there were reports of shattered windows, broken pipes and water main breaks in private buildings

56. Didn't understand the McNabb deal to a division rival. I just heard he nixed a deal to go to the Raiders ( can't blame him ) on that. Man they wanted Donovan GONE, big time....

57. I'm thinking the beginning of the descent of the Eagles.......Kolb?

ReplyDelete
58. I'd pk'em up in fantasy, think he had only 3 starts but threw for 300 plus each time...
Went straight to my keeper league, DARN can't do nothing till after the draft...

I think DMc and Kolb will both do well in o10!!
I don't see the Eagles decending much in o10,(though it is a very tough division)!!
Those draft pks are better than losing the guy for nothing next yr,(since it's known Kolb's the future)!!
Kolb & DMc will be passing-by each-other over the next few yrs during their rise & fall!!
GOOD MOVE for ALL,(other than DMc staying w'in the division),NOT TOO SMART,IMHO!!!
But who cares,it's not AFC stuff that's of major concern to "OUR" FINS!!!

59. Actually,MAYBE it does matter to us??
Several Mocks(including TINS/that's GOTTA piss'em off)has Wash taking a QB @#4 !!
MAYBE NOW they don't,since their set for a few yrs,and they target a position we crave)??
I haven't looked @ their needs,
but it's gotta throw a wrench into many draft plans!!!
I heard they'd likely go OL(so that'd be good),
but now whoever WOULD HAVE GOT that OLineman might end-up targeting a guy we desire,
and so on,and so on,and so on...

GLAD I don't get carried-away Mocking other teams anymore!!!
MAYBE NOW TIN'll redo his mock & I can find-out his plans for NT,FS,TE,(GIGGITTY,GIGGITTY) ;) !!

62. What do you guys think the impact of the DMN trade to Wash has on the top of the draft? I was reading on one of the other blogs that Philly was interested in Clausen, but I questioned that when I read it. They already had DMN, Vick and Kolb. Kolb looks like he's the guy now (and probably has been sinse last year) Does this mix things up?

Tins,

Nice reporting on the Michigan connections. Stephen Ross is indeed a Michigan alum & an extremely generous benefactor.

I figured Vontae would know all of Benn's strengths & weaknesses. I didn't know that about Vontae & Benn being such good friends. I wonder if he's available with a 2nd pick if they take Vonate's word about him or think that Vonate is overrating Benn just to have his buddy on the same team. With that said I think Vontae wants to win & be a great player.

64. I thought McNabb had peaked in Philly and maybe as an NFL QB but that is yet to be seen. I think this trade is completely in line with the Philly MO of trading players while there is still value but a pro bowl QB is rare indeed. I think it was time for Philly to move on, but I do believe he has some life left in him and should get energized by the change of scenery. The thing that shocks me is trading him within the division. Even if the Redskins tank and are a non-factor there will be two games they will be ready to play (if they weren't already). The thing I thought we would see differently with Shanahan was a break from the trade mentality to a draft mentality but that has not been the case, which means Snyder still has it in his head that his team is one player away. The "one player away" formula is foolish and never works, even Brett Farve couldn't take a very good Vikings team over the edge. It's one thing to bring in a FA like Farve or Brees but completely another to trade away draft picks for savours. Teams like Philly understand the NFL has changed and the roster, with the exception of a few players, needs to be churned every 5 years. As players come into their own and demand large contracts their trade value in draft picks is at its peak. The teams consistently at the top of the league acquire draft picks while the teams that ride in mediocrity give up draft picks. What is McNabb worth to the Redskins? Two or three victories with nothing in the pipeline to replace him or other aging vets due to this foolish draft strategy? While Philly sits back and has groomed Kolb for 3 years and has Michael Vick to back him up. I'm sorry, but this trade is a perfect example of a team that gets it and a team that clearly does not. The Eagles may not win 8 games this year but they have again set themselves up to move on to a brighter future while the Redskins will be mired in the middle of the one player away highway destined to continue a long torturous slide into anonymity...

Well, the draft has taken on a new shape. The Redskins now have a very good starting QB & the Eagles are now rebuilding by trading away McNabb. It's very difficult to understand what the Eagles are doing BUT they are amassing a ton of draft picks. I'm not a Philly fan. In fact I strongly dislike their teams & the city but they were a very good football team before last year & now although they're getting younger have no chance to make the playoffs. I also bring this to every attention who may have thought that the Redskins would take Clausen...NOT!!!

Strange to say this since the Eagles have been a very good team for awhile now but with an unproven Kolb, they've taken a HUGE step backwards.

Patrick,

While I believe the Eagles are a much better organization than the Snyder (much hated by myself) Redskin team & the trade of McNabb is better for the long term, you still need to question why they have so much confidence in Kolb. Maybe they will be right on Kolb but his playing experience is extremely limited & it's impossible to gauge his leadership qualities yet. What is the most interesting to me about the Eagles is that they don't run the the ball enough & their defense clearly did not replace their defensive leader in Brian Dawkins were last year. So as bizarre as it is to me that the Eagles actually traded their starting QB, the even stranger trade involved another weakening of their secondary by trading Sheldon Brown (a very good starting CB) & Chirs Gocong who is a pretty good LB for Alex Hall who is a DE that basically did nothing for the Browns last year & a couple of mid round picks???? I understand that the Eagles are always involved in cost-cutting maneuvers but come on??? That is a terrible trade & I believe they could've gotten a better player than Hall.

Although I don't see the Redskins as being a very good team this year, I don't see how the Eagles can be either.

ReplyDelete
67. WHP, I don't agree... Kolb looked pretty good in the games he played, averaging over 30 points. McNabb was given every opportunity to win for the Eagles and could never finish the job. At one point a team has move on. QBs are defined by the outcome of big games and it seems once a QB fails to perform in one of those games his team never wins one. Jim Kelly comes to mind and Fran Tarkington, in fact the only two QBs I can think of who won a SB after losing one are Bob Griese and John Elway, but there may be one or two more. Given 5 chances in the NFC championship game four of which he lost and one losing SB I would say McNabb has defined himself.

The Redskins on the other hand are like a ship without a rudder... To give up draft picks for a bridesmaid QB just seems foolish to me, but it follows a long line of foolish moves by the Redskins...

68. Tin, glad to have that list of visits up. You Rock! Anyway to tell if we pass on them or select them based on the history of the last 2 years? I still think we go OLB with our #12 and "reach" on a NT in later rounds.

70. I agree and think the Eagles are willing to take a step back in order to take a few forward. I LOVE McNabb but he is on the decline now and only has a couple of years left. The Eagles got something for a guy before he was not worth anything. Division team or not, it's only a temporary issue and they get more picks to build their team to be contenders in 2-3 years.

ReplyDelete
71. WHP, it goes back to churning the roster and being able to draft well... I'm from Philly and though I've been a Dolphin fan my entire life a lot of my family are Philly fans and from what they are telling me, the other players on the team were beginning to question why McNabb was playing when Kolb was out-performing him.

Of the 11 players let go this offseason by the Eagles the average age is 29.5 years old with the six players re-signed or acquired average 25.3 years old. Alex Hall is only 24 and they also picked up fourth and fifth round picks in the trade with Cleveland and now have 10 picks. You can see where this is headed. Yes I agree Dawkins hurt but the team needed to get younger and jetison some contracts. The thing is, the Eagles have a plan and they may not be good next year but they clearly are moving forward. The Redskins on the other hand are floundering in my opinion.

Trade for McNab
Is a Win Win Deal

Good for The Redskins Cuz adds instant upgrade at QB and offensive leadership

Good for The Eagles Cuz They get another 1st round pick and have a young QB that can prob get the job done
Esp if they really a bit more on the running game
Also expect the Eagles to be running more in Wildcat & Spread Offense
Believe Mike Vick will have shaken the dust off and be ready to
once again Light It Up

McNab seems to usually plat so good in regular season and then is notorious for tightening up and choking in the Big Games

Playing against each other in NFC division games will certainly bring even more interest to the NFL

Expect the Redskins to now pick Lupati to protect Mcnab & Grossman

ReplyDelete
76. *meant 2nd round pick #37
Good Deal considering McNab is Just Jinxed from winning the Big One for The Eagles
Almost as bad as Jim Kelly was Jinxed from winning a Super Bowl for The Bills

77. yeah but they didn't use one of their 30 visits on him - they spent time with him after his pro-day, and then brought him in for negotiations (at which point they would've given him a physical), but they didn't have a private work-out (still it was a very safe pick).

Patrick,

Say what you want about McNabb but he did take the Eagles to the Super Bowl & a some NFC Championship games. McNabb is definitely one of the better QB's in the NFL & I only wish we had him throughout the years that we couldn't find a QB. Kolb's body of work as a QB is VERY limited. The kid has only thrown 130 passes in the NFL, he's completed 79 of them & he's thrown 4 TD's, & 7 INT's???? Be careful what you wish for b/c this kid has a lot to learn. I don't think that it's so easy to replace a Pro-Bowl caliber QB. If Kolb is NOT the guy in Philly & who the hell knows, than that franchise could be set back a lot longer than just a year.

ReplyDelete
82. Tin: I can't believe BP would announce that Justin Smiley was going to be traded, unless he already had a trade partener. I don't think BP can let Relando McClain get away from him. Parcells has already made a trade for Smiley with his son-in-law to pick Relando at No. 5. I don't know if BP has to give more than Smiley for the exchange of No.12 for No. 5. You may be right that Okland may be the trade partener, but I don't think that Oakland would have committed that far in advance of the draft.

ReplyDelete
83. McClain would be really poor value at # 5. Besides, Smiley and the 12 alone
would not be enough to move to 5.
I don't think the Dolphins have a trade partner for Smiley - if they did it
would've been done by now.
