Comments anyone?

Ok, before anyone gets scared away, I'm writing this to let you all know that I have changed the commenting structure on the blog. It will take you a couple of attempts to get used to, no doubt, but I think though there is always fear when dealing with changes, the benefits will greatly outweigh those fears.

First off, now you can reply to specific comments, and if that commenter has entered his or her e-mail address in the comment box, they will receive an e-mail if THAT comment is 'replied' to. Also the reply will show up attached to the original comment. This way you know who the second person is talking to and also if you don't feel like scanning the comments regularly, you'll know if someone made a joke directed to you, or called your 'Green Rhino' play a retardation of everything that is holy!

You can still make unattached comments that will post chronologically if you don't want to reply to another comment.

The biggest benefit to most of us, however, is the fact I can now ban certain commenters in a multitude of ways that I couldn't before.

So while I'm sure there will be a slight learning curve, I think it will turn out to be a good thing in the long run. If it doesn't we'll try something else :).

PS, you can also now post photos, avatars, youtube vids, etc in the actual comments.

  2. Yikes!! Briefly visited SS a bit earlier. Are you guys always this way in the off-season?

Anyway saw there was a new system here, and thought I would try it out. Like I've said before, I'm very brave! Glad the email is optional, but I am curious if it is displayed, or if the post is just sent there. I don't have anything to hide, and the people I normally "talk" to, I wouldn't care, but those crazies that have been here lately, are another matter entirely.

This avatar thing could be fun!!

  3. BTW, if you can't tell, it's me, herdfan. I registered, so I don't know what I did wrong. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  4. that's pretty funny. whips are always approved. Did you put your name in the 'Your Name' box?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Hmmm. This is a BIT confusing. The first box says leave a comment as and it says herdfan. :) Why is there a second box? Changing it now, and I'm sure it will work. Whatever. My avatar is animated on my screen. Oh, well. I'm going to change it anyway; this is one of the first ones I saw. Makes you wonder at the category I was in! LOL It made me laugh, though.

    ReplyDelete
  6. The first box is your registered ID, and the second box is your nickname/screenname/etc.

Your avatar is animated on my screen too. Was that not intentional? I just assumed you were in a comic book category....but now I suspect something far more sinister!

BTW, this is my first off-season on the blogs (I started last year around mini-camp time) and it's insane. It's like a dysfunctional family.

  7. I went on there earlier and it's like a huge p*ssing contest - where has all the humour gone? What happened to live and let live? When you see discussion threads like that, it isn't difficult to imagine ho wars start? Sigh.

  8. Herdfan,
If the boss had seen your "Miss Whiplash" outfit, maybe he would have done Jungleland for you after all?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yes, the animation was intentional. I was disappointed that it wasn't. Once I post, it isn't animated for me anymore. ;(

  10. I'm sure, but that's OK, I wouldn't want to cross Patti. She looks like she could put up a fight! Funny you say that, last night, my BFF told me that he did that slide toward the camera for me!!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Ho wars? Really uk, I expected more from you!! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  12. Funny you should bring that up, because I was just taking a bite out of a hotdog when he did that and I almost lost my lunch!

  13. I don't 'get' Springsteen. The songs all sounded the same to me. The part where the 90 year old referee came on stage and threw a flag after they acted out the 'pun' scene (or is it 'pun't?) was worse than a elementary school play.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Springsteen isn't my thing either. He comes out with a guitar and before he plays it he tosses it away and grabs the mike like he's a crooner. Oh and does the band really need 6 guitar players with 4 of them all playing the same thing? Talk about playing it safe. LOL

  15. Well, here I go again. Don't want to get in a big debate over it, but I love Bruce, always have, always will, although I have to say that "Tunnel of Love" period was not his best. I was a teenager in the 'Born to Run' era, and it doesn't get old for me. His concerts, at least the ones I've gone to are great. The last one I went to was last spring (Santa put tickets in my stocking!).
I did wonder how doing such a short set at the SB would go over. Apparently not so well for some. Maybe next year the entertainment will be more to your liking. :)

I can't believe the apprehension this posting method is causing. Maybe I'm more naive than I like to think, but seriously, I don't understand it. Unless you are a diabolical stalker, who somehow caused the SS Dolphin blog to go haywire, just so you could start your own blog in order to obtain our information. Not to sound like a nerd, but it reminds me of one of my favorite lines from X-files. "If coincidence is just a coincidence, why does it seem so contrived?" That may not be an exact quote, but you get the picture. Maybe someone should explain the issue, so I can be fearful, before it's too late.

  17. herdfan, I was just agreeing with C-Holmes about Springsteen. Obviously a lot of people like him. I never got him going back to HS when I also grew up at the time he was breaking big. A lot of people in my school were into him. When it comes to music to each their own. I was just stating my opinion. : )

  18. Mr. Bungle,
Hey, it's all good. I have very eclectic musical tastes, and would never presume to question what anyone likes or doesn't, so I hope it didn't come across that way.

I'm having to work late, and I'm waiting for some reports to run, so I can get back to it. There is nothing else to do right now!

  19. herdfan, art is subjective and there are no rules. Only no talent critics with their noses in the air create a criteria for art. To me art is 'freedom' of expression and if millions of people dig your stuff, great! If not, you're a struggling artist. That's the way it goes.

But we all have opinions don't we? LOL

  20. You can either have a preview or an imposter obsessed with anal perversion. :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. For the sake of openness, the following is what I see when I click on 'moderate' (its a button that I see, and it's next to the reply button - I think you guys see a delete button):

    Approve message
    The message is not blocked

    Delete unwanted comment
Get rid of comment without prejudice

    Flag as Spam or Junk
Train Akismet to flag similar comments in the future

    Block this commenter
Make comments from this user invisible to other users

    Block commenter's IP
Make comments from this IP invisible to other users

That's it! at no point do I see any of your email addresses or IPs. The only time I might see an email address is if I click on your name and you have filled out the email field in the comment window. BTW, clicking on a commenters name brings up a window that shows that person's recent comments (very handy if you're trying not to misquote someone). If I don't click on one of those buttons, the comment software doesn't even notice you. And it doesn't send me any reports, it simply deletes the comment.

I cannot speak for randy, etc who don't feel comfortable using my comments but park in the SS which DOES keep track of IPs. Personally I'm not a child molester or a serial killer so I don't even think of these things, but I'm trying to make the system the overall best it can be for everyone.

PS, I agree that Springsteens songs all sound the same and the referee/penalty puns were god awful! ;)

  22. "You can either have a preview or an imposter obsessed with anal perversion. :)" LOL

That's not a great option. Okay, I'm cool! LOL

I wonder if the programmers thought of it that way.

Melvin: "Hmmm... if we offer a preview we might have bloggers who are infatuated with anal perversion."

Sylvester: "Good point, I was too busy working on my sweet skills to pick up on that. Well done Melvin."

    ReplyDelete
  23. Melvin and Sylvester! lol
that conversation is a bit Hitch-hiker's Guide...with a little anal thrown in.

    ReplyDelete
  24. "that conversation is a bit Hitch-hiker's Guide...with a little anal thrown in." LOL

I haven't heard that in years. LOL

Back in the day a girl I was dating and I used to listen to "A Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy" on audio tape and then have anal sex. It's ironic isn't it? : )

  25. I've only learned what a ho is from the SS blog (not). They were acting like how I would imagine a lot of hos would act yesterday. Do you think Lucas would be intersted in making Ho Wars?

    ReplyDelete
  26. I was waiting for a nurse to come on and help him up. He's old enough to be your dad herdfan.

  27. I just don't get half-time entertainment at the Superbowl. What's wrong with reading the program and waiting for the second half to start 10 minutes after the first ended? Isn't the Superbowl "big enough" anyway?
Also, whilst on the subject (sort of) - what's wrong with singing the national anthem. The US anthem is one of the better anthems globably, so why turn it into a cross between an opera and a soundtrack of a hernia operation on a cat without anaesthetic? Some of the warbling over the years has been dowright painful to listen to as each performer tries to "make it their own". Yuk. (sorry about that rant)

    ReplyDelete
  28. uk, the anthem is supposed to be one of the most challenging songs to sing and make sound good. I thought Jennifer Hudson's version was pretty damn good as was the other American Idol one a couple of weeks before...forget her name. As for the half-time entertainment, it would be fine if it was 10 minutes, but they drag it out to about 20 and add the halftime reports, commercials, etc, I think halftime was about 45 minutes! All I know is that my tivo said the Super Bowl was 4.5 hours, and it still ran over that mark by a couple of minutes, then add the ceremony afterwards! But none of that is as bad as the 12 hour pre-game show on NBC.

    ReplyDelete
  29. uk:
I WISH he were old enough to be my dad, but sadly he isn't. I suppose anything is possible, but he would have been a VERY young father, for that era especially. I think I am older than most, if not all, the regulars around here. The confusion may be due to my having mentioned the age of my children, who I had somewhat late in life. I was into the career thing first.

  30. Maybe Tin should give concessions for his "seniors?" I have one more b-day left before the big 5-Oh (no). So I suspect I have a few more cobwebs than you but it is impolite to ask a lady her age, so consider this thread CLOSED!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I must admit, Jennifer Hudson's version was less whacky than lots I've heard, but I guess I'm a vanilla man when it comes to the anthem and cheerleaders are the best form of 1/2 time entertainment in my book. Bar none.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I don't mind. It is what it is. I have 3 left, if I make it!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Being a Chadfan isn't that stressful is it?

  34. Tinshaker:
Just wanted to say sorry if I caused a big thing over on the SS earlier with my question. Completely not my intention. I think I need to filter my thoughts a bit more, and not always ask or say what is on my mind. I've always been that way, character flaw I guess, and it's hard to change it at this point.

Having said that, do you think those posts are authentic? There are a lot of what I would have to call "out of character" posts. Everyone is soooo grumpy and I get enough of that here at work! So I guess I'll have to leave you boys alone and find myself another diversion. Sigh!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I've been reading stuff on the Fins for years, but rarely posted until I started reading Omar's blog and enjoying the mob banter. I'm a bit of a people-watcher too Herdfan and I would be quite surpised if that was the real Mr. Bungle on there today (though I am less practised at reading Americans due to umfamiliarity with some aspects of humour and culture). He is rarely aggressive, preferring in most cases to be the voice of reason and even, on occasion, a peace envoy. I know it wasn't the real ffr (he's in blue these days and never says duuuude)or Walker.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I guess both Mr Bungle and FFR have posted saying they were being impersonated. I thought it was odd the way Mr Bungle was being that way towards me considering his last comment from yesterday (above) was so much more lighthearted. And you're right, uk, he does tend to be very straightforward and calm in his posts. But this shows that the imposter is no longer happy to post immature jokey type comments, but now is trying to become those people. In any event I think his motivation is to confuse me. In the days before I banned him he posted several hundred comments and threats. Now that he has been removed from my site, he is waiting until I post something on SS to start his game.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Pretty pathetic huh?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yeah, but that's his time he's wasting, I try my best not to let it affect me.

herdfan, you're going to like my next blog post.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I hope you're not going to sell out Tin and do a "Saint Chad" blog just to try to leverage some of the "after" pics from Herdfan? lol

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm waiting!!!!! Or do I have to get my whip out again? lol

    ReplyDelete
  41. You guys are correct. That was not me today on the SS today. I did post once saying the previous comments are not me. Then the imposter replied saying "wah" as in I'm being a baby about it. I had a busy day and had no desire to deal with imposters so I passed on blogging today.

Good job on your blog, Tin.

    ReplyDelete
  42. FWIW, I'm not sure that is Walker either. He never posts in the evening, plus, I can't put my finger on it, but it just doesn't seem like what he usually posts. Maybe I'm suspicious of everyone now. I didn't think that was tonydatiger earlier today either. So far, I have been fairly accurate on this. Women's intuition, maybe. If I could just figure out a way to make money with this skill!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. herdfan, when the comments seem out of line it's probably not the real person. I even thought I saw some randy comments that didn't fit his profile. The imposter is playing a little game. He's now trying to control the conversation by pretending to be multiple people. It's turned me off. So if that makes him feel like he wins, so be it. I don't come to Dolphins' blogs to battle trolls.

    Tin's blog is a nice option. : )

    ReplyDelete
  44. Agreed on some of the randy comments.

I was actually thinking that I've been here a little too much when I can tell when someone isn't who they say they are.
