Tin's Tuesday Bits

  • Dolphins' kicking coach, Steve Hoffman (who?), was hired to be special teams coordinator by Kansas City. So right now there is a coaching vacancy in Miami (do kickers really need a 'kicking' coach?) but it's not the one we expected, i.e. Bowles.

Check it out, I've already got the right colour walls in my bedroom!
Here's some orange for you:

  • The Arizona Cardinals put the franchise tag on Karlos Dansby. So there goes THAT target as well. Now it looks like we can focus all our energy on what Baltimore's going to do in the next week. That and the combine of course. Speaking of which, I might need to upgrade my Tivo just to watch all the coverage on NFL Network. They will be showing tons of clips on NFL.com as well. The fun starts on Thursday.

  1. Tin, i think we target two impact players in free agency, add some needs and depth, and then we draft. I have no idea who we have on our radar at the moment. We all have our opinions. Who do you really feel we'll target?

I still think Jason Brown but I'm sure the Ravens will try to keep him, why wouldn't they? One of those 2nd tier WRs like Brandon Jones would make sense. I'm very interested to see who we target on defense.

  2. In 2008, the Dolphins offense:
    s
-went 16.03 yards for each point scored ranking 23rd,
    s
-gained 4.23 yards per rushing attempt ranking 15th,
    s
-converted 37% of third downs ranking 23rd.
    s
    Defensively:
    s
-held opponents to 16.61 yards per point allowed ranking 6th,
    s
-allowed 4.17 yards per rush ranking 18th,
    s
-forced 9.7% negative pass plays ranking 9th,
    s
-held opponents to a 37.8% third down conversion ranking 10th.

These numbers indicate that the offensive is in greater need than the defense. We all saw how the O line could not sustain drives and forced the defense to spend too much time on the field. That points to the OL in need of an upgrade.

The defensive number that sticks out is allowing 4.17 yards per rushing play and the argument could be made that they got beat up by spending too much time on the field because the offense couldn't sustain drives.
    s
The Dolphins primarily need to upgrade the OL to sustain drives.
    s
Although the stats look favorably on the defense, the D needs to apply more pressure against the qb.

  3. We all know the OL needs more talent and depth. But the defense has some aging players at some positions and we need to address it now before we have too many voids. We're not real deep on defense especially in the secondary.

  4. I thought I had surfed to Advanced NFL Stats for a second there.

While you're right that our offense needs more improvement than the defense, the defense needs more bodies (literally) so it will likely be a focal point of the draft.s I would be surprised if we didn't draft 1 safety, 1 CB, 1 DT, and possibly 2 LBs.s I could see the DB number going up to 3, which would mean 6 out of 9 picks would be defensive.s I feel like (other than OL) offensive playmakers have a short lifespan as opposed to defensive ones, so it's better to draft young defensive prospects and free agent proven offensive playmakers.
    s
That's my take.s I know Bungle and I are in agreement pretty much on the free agency thing, and if we do pay out for a FA center, and possibly a WR (there seems to be a lot of dolphin buzz around Miles Austin, for example) then that would be one or two less draft picks needed on offense.

  5. Exactly.s Did you hear Alex Mack sprained his ankle and won't workout in the Combine?s the OL prospects are starting to drop like flies.

BTW, there's a new blog post up.
