Tins Bits - UPDATED - Updated AGAIN! - and Again!

Friday updates:
  • I want me a Patrick Surtain...jersey? They pulled this last year in Miami, they slashed the price of the Jason Taylor thongs weeks before the trade.
  • The polls are closed and Obama was elected as the Commander in Chief. Oh wait, Todd Haley was. It's as if the Chiefs didn't even interview any black candidates! Ridiculous. on to a different poll...
When asked which former Dolphin (in his prime) you would add to the 2009 roster, a whopping 60% of voters said Dan Marino.

Runners-up: Klingbeil 17%, Duper 11%, Fryar 6%, Ruddy 4%, Byars 0%. I know Marino was the face of the Dolphins for so long, but Quarterback is not a position of need in 2009. I was surprised that Ruddy came in 5th.

When asked in Draft Poll #2, Who should the Dolphins draft with their #25 (1st round) pick, 40% said Percy Harvin.

Runners-up: Larry English 20%, Macho Harris 15%, Clint Sintim 10%, Alphonso Smith 10%, Louis Delmas 5%. I suspect the numbers here are skewed based on familiarity. Harvin is a Florida guy, really doesn't fit with the Dolphins unless he only runs the Wildcat (at which point we might as well trade Ronnie), but everyone who reads the Florida papers probably knows the name. Same with English, he has been mentioned in many mock drafts in the same sentence with Miami.

  • The 3rd 'Draft Poll' will be up later today, along with another 'Prospect of The Day' post.
  • Anquan Boldin still isn't happy with the Cardinals. He says, "I don't think the relationship can be repaired with the organization." If he had played all 16 games in the regular season, projections show he would've caught 102 passes for 1186 yards and 13 touchdowns. And he did this as the number TWO guy. Sure, the Dolphins don't throw that much, but if we had a guy like Boldin, we'd probably throw MORE than we do now. As I'm not a fan of math, I propose a 30 second 'how can we trade for Boldin?' brainstorm. Essentially, what do you think we can offer and what do you think the Cards would accept. Go!
  • According to BRETT FAVRE's agent, Bus Cook (I've heard of a Ship Cook, but surely a bus could just pull over and dine out), there's no pressure on Favre to decide on his future. He says Favre is deer hunting everyday. I have to admit I'm not into hunting or any of those outdoorsy rugged 'manly' sports but I couldn't help but think to myself, "they hunt deer in February?" So I went and checked it out and it turns out that deer hunting season in Mississippi is between September 12th and January 3rd, depending on what sort of deadly weapon you use. So unless Favre is using the deadly weapon that is his right arm, he's BREAKING THE LAW!! Does the NFL have a rule for this? Suspension anyone? LoL.
  • update: Thanks to seasoned deer hunter, herdfan, it has been confirmed that Favre does in fact live in and most likely hunt in 'Zone 2' which allows the use of 'primitive weapon' deer hunting until February 22nd. So he's not breaking the law, but he IS using his deadly primitive weapon, aka his arm, which means my original post was half right.

Thursday bits:

  • Was cruising the mock drafts today and found this quote from the normally reputable Matt McGuire.
    • "A source close to the Dolphins at the Senior Bowl told me he does not expect Vernon Carey to be re-signed. Right tackle is a need and Phil Loadholt fits what Bill Parcells looks for in a huge, physical offensive lineman in the mold of a Jacob Rogers, Jumbo Elliot or Jake Long (but not as good as Elliot or Long; just saying they are all big maulers)."
    • At the Senior Bowl, the Dolphins were represented by the Trifecta in person and no one else. Makes one wonder who this source is. Who was there on the media side...Omar? Armando? Edgar? Have any of these guys said they don't think Carey will be re-signed? It should be noted that McGuire made this statement TODAY rather than a couple of weeks ago when he started updating his mock draft.
  • Graham also has this blog 'scratching your mock itch'. One question - who is Jamon Meredith? He must be somebody if McShay has us drafting him ahead of William Beatty.
  • The New England Patriots announced today that they have utilized their 2009 franchise designation on quarterback Matt Cassel.

  1. "normally reputable Matt McGuire"

this guy is not reputable. he is a clown.

  2. Maybe I will edit it to 'decreasingly reputable', lol.

What happened to the 2nd guy on walterfootball? They've edited out any evidence of him.

  3. who is the second guy u mean? i wish theyd edit out matt mcguire. the fsct that he portrays himself to be legitimate makes it even worse.

  4. There were two guys there, at least they had two mock drafts. I forgot the other one's name. His draft was up last week now it's gone. I think I even quoted from it last week...

  5. Tinshaker:

I don't want to put myself in the precarious position of defending the crybaby, but

    http://skinnymoose.com/stabley/category/2008-2009-mississippi-deer-hunting-seasons/

Scroll down to near the bottom. Apparently he is using a "primitive weapon" and in the 2nd region! Maybe he is using a muzzleloader or something, I guess that's primitive. I know some 'hunters'. lol

  6. Great, now I have to reveal MY source, lol.

I don't understand the one you listed, herdfan, it shows two different dates for 'primitive' weapons, and the dates are so different but they are the same as the 'youth gun' dates. I wouldn't want to be running around with a slingshot while a bunch of 12 year old with rifles were around.

  7. My favorite article you've written Tin. They have to hunt when there is fresh snow so they can track the deer and see where they usually walk. Then they set up downwind and wait for the deer to walk by, I have no idea about the laws though

I remember reading a week ago about Carey's agent saying the dolphins were very interesting. I guess this is the time of year for conflicting stories

I see Hill as someone you give a 2 year deal for a resonable sum of money. He had as many INT's as Will Allen and he's a great play caller for our secondary. I'd definetly prefer him over what I saw from Crocker this year, however maybe not Atogwe. I would still bring in a FA or draft pick and let them compete, if Hill looses he'd be our #1 saftey backup. Plus he proved this year that he is good on special teams so he could play a backup role and special teams

That article on Wake was exelllent. I especially like how they mention all the name confusion, I remember the blog being the same way for a couple days

I'm hoping Brady has a Culpepper like comeback and is never the same player he was before. The Cassel tag was coming all year, ACL/MCL that's all the ligaments in your knee, well not really but atleast on either side of your knee cap

  8. The different dates mean this:
The first date, I believe was in December, was either sex, meaning bucks and does.
The second date, which ends Feb. 15, is bucks only.

  9. I don't hunt. I do however fish, with my kids. We go camping alot, once it is warm enough! I am the proud holder of a lifetime fishing license! Before anyone asks, I have caught a grand total of one fish in my life. Ah, but the ones that got away!

  10. Thanks Phinatic. That Brady comment was a bit harsh, don't ya think? lol. The thing with that is everyone thinks they will trade Brady, but coming off that injury they couldn't possibly get good value for him, even if he is all healed up. But I don't understand the non-exclusive tag...does that mean if another team makes an offer, the offer has to be for 14 mil a year?

  11. Funny thing, I google mapped Favre's house to see what Zone he was in, and the first link that showed up was a map showing how to get from some guy's house in Texas to Brett Favre's house. I didn't realize you could look up stalker's evil plans on google but apparently it IS the best search engine out there...

    ReplyDelete
  12. Great, now not only do we have to worry about you having all our personal info after registering here, you have also figured out a way to find our homes on a google map. I think I'm going to lock my doors!! LOL

  13. I have no sympathy for enemies. I'm more of the opinion that they franchised Cassel just in case Brady isn't ready at the start of the season. If he is then they'll trade Cassel or if Brady is ready for next season than trade Cassel next offseason. They just didn't want a bidding war with Detroit or Minnesota

I heard of a small town finding marijuana grow fields using google earth. Great power can be used for both good and evil

  14. Check out Favre's house. The thing in front of the guest house is a pool. No idea what the weird ampitheater bit is...place to host his relatives' weddings?

    ReplyDelete
  15. They do that all the time here in California, satellite images of small mountain camps, etc.

With the Cassel thing, how can they trade him if they sign him for $14M? No team, other than Kansas City, could afford that sort of late hit on their cap at that point in the year. Or can they drop the tag after free agency signing period and then sign him to a long-term contract? I gotta be honest, I'm lost on this one.

  16. Maybe that's his own little practice facility.

    ReplyDelete
  17. We don't need boldin this year! Year 2 must fortify the OL before we open up the offense. Year 3, maybe pennington, maybe henne, plenty of beef up front, that's the year to trade for a boldin! ...nydolphin

    ReplyDelete
  18. Fine, don't play along. But don't come running to me when there's no Boldin's available next year!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Heck, Boldin has two years left on his contract!

    ReplyDelete
  20. What about:
    Michael Jenkins ATL 6-4 215 5 yrs.
    Bryant Johnson 49'ers 6-3 211 6 yrs.
    Reggie Williams Jags 6-4 212 5 yrs.
    Michael Clayton Bucs 6-4 215 5 yrs.

  21. Not to mention T.J Houshmandzadeh and Antonio Bryant!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I heard we might use our franchise tag on Carey and sign him to a one year deal at the price of the top 5 OT in the game. That might seem high to some but it keeps our OL in tact for another year as we continue to upgrade. I'm not sure if the franchise price tag would be for RTs or OTs in general. My guess is OTs in general. We'll see what happens.

    ReplyDelete
  23. nydolphin, all those WRs you mentioned are 2nd tier talents. Houshmandzadeh and Jenkins are the best of the group but Jenkins was re-signed by Atlanta.

I'd love to see T.J. in Miami. A lot of people say at 31 years old (he'll be 32 in Septmeber) he's not the type of free agent the trifecta will target but he would be a legit #1 WR for us. We already have a lot of youth at WR, I don't see anything wrong with having one 32 year old top talent at WR. It's not as if he's on the downside, the guy can still play at a high level. He catches a lot of passes for 1st downs and he gets in the endzone. I'm not saying we should offer him elite level money because he's not one of the top 5 WRs in the game, but he might be top 10. He would definitely make us better.

I wouldn't be surprised if we target a big WR who is more of a 2nd tier talent to compete. We tried that with Wilford last year and that didn't work out, but that doesn't mean it will always turn out that way.

The Titans' Brandon Jones might be a more affordable option who could push Camarillo and London for playing time. He'll be in his 5th season. He's 6-1 212 and 26 years old, he'll be 27 in October. So he's still a young guy who's coming off of his best season. A modest 41-449 and only 1 TD, but he does have 9 career TDs spending most of his time as a backup. He wouldn't be an exciting free agent signing, but he could be ready to compete for a starting job in a new environment. Just throwing it out there.

The Saints' Devery Henderson is another guy. At 5-11 200 he's not that big physical WR we're looking for but he is quick. He'll be 27 in March. He's been productive as a role player. He can get down the field and he's scored 14 TDs in his 4 year career. I'm not sure he fits what we're looking for.

It's not a great year for free agent WRs.

  24. Parcells will probably find his WR in the draft! I'm thinking the odds are against Pennington staying healthy another full season and I'm sure that Henne was well-prep'ed to step right in should P go down. Do they build the O around henne?

Franchising Carey is smart because he's a RT that can play LT, so someone's gonna bid high for him.

    ReplyDelete
  25. nydolphin, we might draft a WR but there will be a learning curve and we're already young at the position with guys still developing in Ginn, Bess, Camarillo and London.

If we upgrade the OL and run the ball better and keep Pennington upright, I see no reason why Pennington can't stay healthy for another season. But QBs do get hurt and you need depth. Henne is a good prospect who's time will come. Personally I hope it's not in 2009 because I think we're a better team with Pennington. He was the 2nd rated passer in the NFL and just had his best season. Henne doesn't have the experience Pennington does. Beck should also be better in camp this year. Both Henne and Beck are learning a lot from Pennington. Our QB situation is a good one in my opinion.

We need to keep adding talent to the OL. I agree with you on Carey. It's not like it's guaranteed we'll replace him with a player as good or better. Like Sparano said, tackles are hard to find and teams don't let them walk very often.

If we franchise Carey and pay him a big one year deal, we can continue to upgrade our interior OL and maybe in 2010 we'll be in better shape to upgrade at RT. Maybe we'll draft a RT this year and he'll be more prepared to take over in 2010 than he would be this season. Build through the draft and promote from within. It's always better to have players ready to step in when you need them to then to go out and find a replacement because you have a void. Having too many voids slows down the rebuilding process.

2009 is the year were we can add more stud talent to our roster and upgrade the overall talent level of our team. 2008 we had to get better at QB, fill voids and add depth to a weak bottom half of the roster. This year we can upgrade the top end, the middle and the bottom half of our roster.

I would hope we add at least 5 or 6 impact players from free agency and the draft. Think about if we had a similar team to the one we put on the field in 2008 and added 5 or 6 impact players at a few positions. C and/or G, WR, a pass rushing OLB (maybe Wake), ILB, CB and S. We're a better team. So losing Carey, Crowder, Bell, Goodman and Hill would balance that out some, so we need to keep getting better, not staying neutral.

Of our 5 big free agents I'm leaning towards re-signing Carey, Bell and Goodman. Crowder will probably get a better offer elsewhere and Hill is a stop gap FS anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 5 or 6 impact players would definitely put a better product on the field! It should become interesting seeing how the fins use FA and the draft to do it.

I agree on keeping Carey, Bell and Goodman and let the rest go.

  27. We're in good cap shape and we have 9 draft picks including two 2nd rounders. We should be able to land 3 good free agents who either start or play significant roles, and the same with the draft. If we can add 2 or 3 impact players in the draft we'll be in good shape. Then hopefully the middle and bottom end of the roster will be improved.
