Free Agency Preview - Miles Austin

Most of us know that Miles Austin was on Hard Knocks last season making a strong move to be the number 2 receiver in Dallas' training camp. I believe they started the year with Patrick Crayton at that spot but Austin probably would've gotten there if not for his injury. Dallas thinks Crayton is an old man, T.O. may be on the way out, Roy Williams almost bankrupted the team, and Danny Amendola will try again to make the 53 man roster.

It sounds to me that the Cowboys would be wise not to let Austin go, but as he is a restricted free agent, they might be able to get a decent draft pick for him and all the reporters are saying the Dolphins are interested in Austin.
He is expected to earn a $1.45 million second-round tender. Hopefully Mr. Bungle will explain what that means, as the only tender I understand has chicken in it.

The following is an excerpt from DeFrancos Training (a NFL combine workout prep gym) website from 2006:

FREAK SHOW!

Miles Austin re-writes the DeFranco’s record board before leaving for the NFL Combine!

Miles Austin

After running a 4.41-second 40-yard dash on Monday (improving from 4.59), Miles finished his final week of intense training before leaving for the NFL Combine with a bang! On Friday, he weighed in at a shredded 219 ¾ lbs. (down from 240) and he broke the following 2 records in our College Athlete (under 220 lb.) division…

VERTICAL JUMP RECORD!

Miles on his way up to a 43” vertical jump!

225 lb. bench press test record!

Miles benching 225 lbs. 23 times!

  1. I liked us signing Crayton last year in the offseason before they gave him a new deal.s Signing Austin wouldn't be a bad idea, he can't be worse than wilford. What little I saw from Austin last year he looked sharp.
    s
Tender is what you want to have with your stakes and chicken. They sell something called a "tenderizer". It is a sophisticated device with different size spikes on each end of a mallet.s

  2. Tin, Miles wasn't drafted and unless the Cowboys sign him to a restricted free agent contract the value of whatever draft pick compensation they choose, it would cost no draft pick compensation to sign him. That being said, unless we blow the Cowboys away with a deal that they wouldn't match, they have the right to match and keep him from us. I'm not sure Miles has done enough to earn a big contract that the Cowboys couldn't match.
    s
The tender is thesvalue of the draft pick compensation contract they sign a player to.
    s
    I hope that helps. : )

  3. So what was the deal with Welker?s Didn't he get a higher tender than he was worth?s I read somewhere that Dallas would put a 2nd round tender on Austin because Austin had 'earned it'.s Like I said in the article, I have a hard time understanding free agency of the restricted kind.s This is why I want to draft a WR so I don't have to deal with this stuff.

  4. Oh, right, you harp on a tiny dot in the corner, but no comment on the way Phinatic spells STEAK?

    Ridiculous! :'(

  5. The Dolphins decided Welker was worth 2nd round money after catching 67 passes in 06. He was also a solid return man so the value was there. The Pats were willing to give up the 2nd round pick and offer Welker a deal Miami wasn't willing to match. There were some shenanigans going with the contract and the NFL stepped in and the two teams made a deal. That's why we ended up getting a 2nd and a 7th in a trade. It was typical Patriots/Belichick BS.

Austin had 13 catches for 278 yards and 3 TDs. He proved to be a deep threat but hardly a consistent WR. That was on an explosive offense with other players like T.O.,Witten, Crayton, Barber and Jones before he got hurt.
    s
The Cowboys didn't rely on Austin, he took advantage of his opportunities. That's not a bad thing but he's been developing for 3 years. In those 3 seasons he has 18 catches for 354 yards and 3 TD. I wouldn't give up a pick for him.

  6. To be fair those numbers are skewed because Austin only played on special teams for his first two years.s Last year was the first time he got on the field and he got injured in preseason, then again later in the year.s He came back and posted those numbers in just two or three games.s He was one of the top KO returners in the league his rookie year.s
Still he had decent numbers for a #4 WR.
Here's an interesting stat (if you'res a football nerd):
On turf he averages 15.4 ypc.s On grass - 31.0 ypc.
    s
He should be playing for an outdoor team.
    s
But I agree he doesn't warrant a pick, but does that mean that alot of RFA's just get resigned after free agency?s What happens if they don't get re-signed....do they become UFAs?

I think the 'phins will draft a center rather than overpay for a FA. Ireland also said they won't give up any of their draft picks. BP let Pace leave town last year because the price was too high. "On March 3, 2008, Pace and the Jets came to terms on a six-year, $42 million deal that includes $22 million in guaranteed money."
    s
Of course, last year BP signed UFA OG Justin Smiley. He signed a five-year, $25 million contract with $9 million guaranteed.

  8. I hear you on the fact that he played special teams his first two years. That's what I'm saying, he's been a project and as a WR he his production came in a bunches over only a few games. If he was starting for us as opposed to being another cog in the Cowboys talented offense, the results wouldn't be as impressive. I'm not saying he couldn't become a good WR, but I've seen this before from Players everyone gets high on and it never happens.

  9. nydolphins, Parcells also signed Kevin Mawae when he was with the Jets. In 98, his 2nd season with the Jets he went out and made Mawae his biggest free agent acquisition and he became a perennial Pro Bowler.

My belief and I think it's the opinion of a lot of football people, is that top notch players in the trenches win a lot of games and a good OL helps even a mediocre offense with few skill players to be more efficient. It gives the QB and receivers time to make a play and it helps the running game. If there are holes to run through even a 2nd tier back can be productive. Ronnie and Ricky are both above average talents, even Ricky at this point in his career. He's still a very good player.
    s
Getting our running game going is a big priority in this team getting better. I would rather see us pound it between the tackles 30 times and throw the Wildcat at them 5-6 times when we have them on their heels trying to catch their breath. Being that we can run the Wildcat out of a base formation, we can keep that tired defense on the field and exploit them. We could probably take advantage of more pass plays out of it.
