Thursday Morning Coffee

  • So by now you've heard we have our starting ILB Channing Crowder back. WTF! I've spent the last 4 weeks figuring out how to replace him through the draft! I want my damn time back! It's official, I'm no longer getting my news from the Sun-Sentinel or the Palm Beach Post. They have been wrong on everything in the last couple of months! I never bothered with the Herald because I can never find the magic 'blurb' of actual news there. So it's official, I will now get my Dolphins news from myself! LOL. Well, not FROM myself, but from my own research and that of my glorious readers and commenters.
  • Speaking of the glorious ones, I want to take a special moment to thank all of you who take the time to visit and engage in the art of blogging with me. It is especially appreciated because of the timing of it. I used to really enjoy parking on the Ol' S.S. bus and riding it through the day but lately it just hasn't been the same. So while I know I will never be able to keep up with the false reports and typos, I will continue to try to make this blog something that I would read myself, and hopefully thus, other Dolfans would as well. And with that in mind, the following video is for you guys. You will want to drop whatever you are doing right now and just take it all in...

Ok, now that I've ranted AND raved, let's get to some discussion points.
  • With the re-signing of Crowder, it becomes unlikely that we would go after an ILB in the first round of the draft. It also makes it unlikely we would go after Bart Scott in free agency. It's also not been reported whether or not Vonnie Holliday has restructured his contract (if that was even true, sun-sentinel). At the same time, the NFL increased the salary cap by $3 million today. So if this all pans out as being true, there is an increasing chance we would draft a defensive end with the first pick. But this is where it gets tricky. Unless they plan on converting Peria Jerry to DE (not a bad idea IMO) there really isn't any value in that pick. So if we scratch ILB, DE, DT (because only Jerry is at that level), RB, QB, OL, and S, simply because there's either no 1st round talent, the dolphins don't have a need, or we wouldn't draft so high (OL) for depth, that leaves cornerback and wide receiver as the best value picks.
Looking at the rankings provided by nfldraftscout.com, the following players are within the range of 15 to 35 (a ten point swing either way, IMO, the furthest any player would swing at this point in the first round:

CB Vontae Davis (15)
CB DJ Moore (19)
WR Percy Harvin (24)
WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (28)
CB Alphonso Smith (31)
WR Hakeem Nicks (33)

So it's possible one of these guys, based on my logic, will be the next Miami Dolphins draft choice. We know the Dolphins have already invited Harvin to workout and rumours are they invited Heyward-Bey as well.

Of course, my logic could be twisted to say since Peria Jerry is the only non-CB/WR of value in a position of need, then HE is the next Dolphin draft choice.

  1. Thanks for taking us back in time Tin. I thought our current "fight" song was getting a bit lame but that video plumbed new depths ("we're awesome in the day, but magic in the night" ..... sounds like a Barry White line?)
    s
Did you watch this posted on the SS by watch .... better for getting the blood pumping again.

  2. I'm surprised by Crowder's signing! Was it a "hometown discount" or was it because there were few alternatives? Just goes to show that, as 'Phins fans and wannabe talent scouts, we try to read BP to no avail. I love this time of year because you get to see BP "buy the groceries" for chef Tony, who almost got meat loaf served alongside prime rib last year!

Unrelated Thought: Shouldn't the availability of several good centers in the draft dampen Jason Brown's otherwise good leverage for top dollar? s

  3. nydolphin - I suspect you are not alone in the surprise stakes - I don't think many saw this coming after all the media reports on posturing etc. Omar wrote the following report which you can read between the lines of:

I read one report about Minnesota going after Brown and Miami chasing Birk if the Vikes can't resign him. Here are the FA centres. No doubt some impatient teamswill pay for the best FA centre now, rather than draft and hope.

Personally, I'd like us to draft a centre - a good line is important, but why do we need the most expensive line in football for it to be good?sIf we want long term success, we have to draft for it. Check out this article from Ethan -sit is well argued.

  4. ukfinfan, agreed, draft a center. If we go deep into the playoffs this year and come to find that the OL was the weak link that prevented us from going to the SB, then I would consider paying top dollar for JB. We'll find out a lot about this team this year with their schedule.

Brain Fart: Houston has a need for a backup QB. Now that rosenfels is in minnesota, Beck to Houston for Houston's #46, #79, 3rd, 4th, or 5th round picks?

  5. I love this blog especially if it keeps you and a few others out of other real blogs. Nothing personal, but I still don't get what you are doing here. You're not posting news. You copying news from other spots and patting yourself on the back. I know there are some real asses on those other blogs and people who seem to just enjoy starting fights but if it wasn't for actual news sites, you wouldn't have real news to take and put here. Just some perspective man, but I think some of your buds are maybe inflating your ego a bit too much.

  6. Asgood rookie centre and D. Thomas will have a year under their belts for the 2010 season when we should be really contending. I trust the trifecta to find us a good one in the draft. We also tied up plenty more cap room with signing Gybril Wilson.
    s
At one time, I wanted to trade Beck for a pick because we had a lot of needs in the draft, but it looks like we should wait and see what FA brings us - it looks like the Trifecta has been busy already. ;)

  7. Will we sign Bell or Hill to play alongside Wilson or go in a completely different direction? Whilst Wilson was a SS at the Raiders, Simon Clancy pointed out that he played FS for the Giants. Bell and Wilson would be a really physical pair of safeties that might just scare a few receivers thinking about going over the middle against us.

    ReplyDelete
  8. uk, if we re-sign Bell then we'll know Wilson will play FS. That was an excellent signing. Wilson is a real good player and he makes big plays.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I'm very happy. :) sIt's like night and day - the Trifecta have a plan whilst previous regimes groped around in the dark. If we carry on like this, next season will be even more fun than last!

  11. And as Parcells always said, if you improve at the expense of your opponents, all the better. Whodathunkit after the 1-15 season ended that (possibly) two seasons later, we'd be hearing Penny threw a TD to Coles and we'd be cheering! =-O

  12. Morning everyone.s Has anyone besides Foxsports reported the Wilson signing?ss I don't see it on the Miami sites.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hey Tin, glad there's another great dolphin blog to read at work. Thank you for that, obvioulsy we still have to give love to Omar though.
    s
Anyway, C and WR are two positions I can see the fins addressing early in the draft however, these positions are supposed ot be very deep.
    s
I'm think CB is the most likely focus for our 1st round, but I wouldn't be surprised to see an OLB or NT either.
    s
Does anyone know how much Channing got?

  14. Tin, it's everywhere now.

  15. I think its close to certain Haynesworth will go to the Redskins if he enters free agency.s The type of money they are offering could only be matched by another crazy owner like Al Davis.
    s
    Thanks for stopping by! :)

  16. The Bills cut some guy named Derrick Dockery.s Anyone up north know the story on this guy?s at 6'6" 330, 28 years old, 77 starts...

    ReplyDelete
  17. The exact amount hasn't been reported but I'm expected to be about $20M with 9 million guaranteed.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Wow Tin, you and I are posting like crazy on the Herald today. You've given out your email several times. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  19. Thanks for the figures Tin. So if Carey is taking about 5.5 of cap space and we factor in about 6 mil each for GW and CC, then we have about 12 mil left to play with in free agency, is thats right?
    s
Is signing Brown and Bell totally out of the question?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Damn I almost forgot we signed Cameron Wake too (who looks nasty on youtube). Maybe we really don't need much more. I dk, should we be hoping for another Parcells guy to in L coles to come in too. I mean I hate the idea of another former Jet coming in, but that whole Pennington thing worked out alright.

    ReplyDelete
  21. And yet not one person has e-mailed me.s This is the first time I've been impersonated though.

    ReplyDelete
  22. s
No it's not. You've been impersonated many times on the Herald along with finfanrob and myself.

  23. Good pickup in G. Wilson. I'd like to to see the saftey position occupied by Wilson at FS and Bell at SS.sBoth guys will hit and Wilson has some ball skills. Big upgrade.sSign Bell today.s

    ReplyDelete
  24. Using your figures we'd have about 11ish million left but that number will go up with the losses of several players.s Even if we just cut 8 to 10 minimum wagers, we'd still get between 5 to 10 million back (which would immediately be used on rookies.s Plus if they can re-work Holliday's contract we might get a million or so back there.s but I have a feeling Wilson won't get that big of a contract.s I also am still skeptical about the Carey number.s If I have time later I'll try to break down the contract.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Kent, i was about to copy and paste for you, lol, glad you got it working.
    s
Mr Bungle. I never read that trash mag.s What happened to FFR?s Did he just give up?

    ReplyDelete
  26. ffr is back on the SS today. That fan dude is starting with him already but tony is on the attack. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  27. The Wilson contract is rumored to be 5 years $27.5 million and $8 million guaranteed.

    ReplyDelete
  28. That's probably around his value.s I wouldn't have paid more for him, so his agent got the job done.
    s
    Tony lives for confrontation.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Official numbers for GW - 5 years $27.5M, $8M guaranteed with $16.5 in the first three years.

    s
    Tin,
I like your logic on the draft I think we could see Tuna trade out of the 1st if the value isn't there.........especially if we sign more FA's

  31. Tin, let me know your take on Jake Grove(center from Oakland) and Chris Canty(DE from Dallas). Do we take this route as it may be cheaper to address some holes than the top tier guys?

  33. Thanks Dcarver!
    s
I think we are really starting to put the pieces together, even if they are unexpected pieces.s I never had Wilson on the radar or Coles, obviously, but am hopeful we will see a much improved team with both (assuming Coles takes a paycut) on the roster.
    s
Yes, players actually want to be a part of a team on the rise!s The warm weather doesn't hurt, either.s And our saviour of a Head Coach.s And Coles's man-crush on Pennington!s LOLs We got it all in Miami!

  37. Kent, as a resident of the Bay Area (at least according to the local media), I would like nothing less than to have anything to do with the raiders much less grab players off that disgusting team.s But seeing that we just scooped up Wilson, I might have to get over my feelings on that subject.
    s
Chris Canty falls into the 'would I take a pay-cut and fewer snaps to play for the Dlphins because I want to be a part of that team' category.
    s
Considering the fact that he has repeatedly refused to sign a long-term deal with Dallas, I think he'd rather go where the money is.
    s
If Minnesota or Buffalo outbids Miami for Brown, I think they will draft a center in the first two rounds.

  44. Ridiculous.s I just read the comments on the 'SS' today and you guys are out of control!s I can't believe that 'fan' is cutting and pasting from my site.
    s
Maybe he can cut and paste this:ss I never singled out Omar, I mentioned all the papers I used to get Dolphins news from.s I said they had not been reliable sources in the last few weeks.s Their speculation has been off lately.s That's not a bashing of anyone, just a statement of fact.s They were wrong about Crowder, wrong about Carey, stated nothing about the Dolphins interest in Wilson, and at least two of the papers did not mention the signing of Tearrius George.s My only complaint is that lately those sources have not been the best place to get Dolphins related news.
    s
That does not mean I won't continue to read Omar's analysis, stock reports, etc. It just means I'll take any 'inside source reports' with a grain of salt.

  45. I think the attack is personal!s Maybe is an old, old crush!!

  46. Tin:
Can you help me on this one?s How does the salary cap affect the total of players you take to training camp?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ok I'll try to be brief.
    s
If a player is cut/released/traded/etc before June 1st, then whatever bonus money they had pro-rated would count entirely towards this season.s If they were transitione AFTER June 1st, the bonus would all be counted towards the cap the following year.s Example:s Wilford.s If we cut him now, the 4.5 million or whatever it was would count entirely against us in 2009.s If we cut him later it will count entirely against 2010, instead of being pro-rated.s Since their is no cap next year, word is the post june 1st rollover would not happen and it would all count against 2009.s That said, if a player is cut/traded/etc. their BASE SALARY would be wiped off the books.
    s
So if we cut/release/trade a player who has a significant base salary with low or no bonuses, we would get a savings, because only the bonus counts against the cap at that point.
    s
As for the training camp question, only the highest paid 53 players on the team are counted towards the cap.s The team must be under the salary cap 365 days a year.s If they are not, the league office would void contracts on that team.s Now to my recollection this has never happened, and we know that the jets were way over the cap a few weeks ago, so maybe they've amended that rule.
    s
But yeah to answer your question, only the top paid 53 players count towards the cap during training camp.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Just a summary:
    s
Salary Cap:s Based on Top 53 Players' salaries, bonuses AND incentives.
    s
There is a loophole called a 'Not Likely To Be Reached' incentive.s This would be something like rushing for 1800 yards, or Throwing 50 TDs or something like that.s Maybe Merling had one for score a TD to win the division LOL.s These are basically proper performance bonuses, whereas the 'Likely to be reached' incentives are just a way to boost a player's contract with silly things like 'make 3 interceptions' or 'play 75% of the offenisive snaps' (Favre had that one last year).

    ReplyDelete
  49. Ok and now a correction to myself, had to research it.s Apparently the Jets were ok because they had up to March 1st (start of the league fiscal year) to match up their 2009 numbers with the league's 2009 cap.

    ReplyDelete
