And Now...Your 2009 Miami Dolphins!

The combine officially goes into high gear today and if my tivo is working (long story) I'll have hours and hours of NFL Network waiting for me to watch into the wee hours tonight. But what positions are bound to garner the most interest from the Trifecta? Due to the format of the combine, they'll be able to watch the quarterbacks and running backs just as much as the offensive linemen, but it's possible they'll leave the scouts to do that while Parcells, Ireland and Sparano hole up in a meeting room to discuss what they've seen from the OL and WR positions instead. The best way to speculate what our needs are is probably to look at our current roster. This idea was sprouted from the mind of contributor, Mr. Bungle, and I've done the work for us all.

You can click on the expand arrow at the top to zoom in and out and move around the roster or just click on the full screen window to see it up close. I did this in .pdf format so I can redline it as we go along to see the changes.

So let's break it down. If I am accurate there will be 10 to 15 new faces on the roster from '08 to '09. Parcells said 18. That must've made some of these guys piss their pants.

I see some obvious bottom end guys here. Our depth is not very good in about half of the positions. What do you think?

  1. Tin, nice job! is this roster interactive?

  2. Believe it or not, it WAS!s But when I converted it to pdf it lost that capability.s To be honest most of the names that we're unfamiliar with have very little background info on nfl.com or wikipedia so it's not a huge loss.s But you know me, if i had the time I would link each name to a youtube video of their high school highlights.

  3. Dude, you and Mr Bungle have way too much time on your hands. Just curious, but what is the whole point of this all?

    ReplyDelete
  4. The point is, that if you want to read/discuss something, you can.s If you don't, you don't have to.

  5. Ok I've added links.s It was actually very easy and took 2 minutes.

  6. Tin, I couldn't pull the roster up. Help.

  7. Kent, lol, I don't know what to say other than I feel for you, man.s Can you see anything?s it's a pdf file so it will load after the rest of the page and then you can navigate around it using the zoom/full screen/grab functions.s I've tried to make it as user-friendly as possible.s Your job network must be super paranoid.s Maybe bring a wireless laptop to work?s

Speaking of that, how come your comment worked this time?s At home?

  8. Oh, maybe you need to install/upgrade adobe reader?

  9. Tin, I guess since you changed the system on 2-14, I'm able to view and comment again. Can you attach the PDF to my personal email? I don't even see one on this site.

  10. Way to go Tin!

  11. Am I the only one here excited to find out the latest measurements?
    s
Today they're measuring the OL guys.s I was quite surprised in the poll that Herman Johnson didn't get all the votes, but apparently he's lost 30 lbs since the Senior Bowl!s That's like me losing my two year old!

  12. Herman Johnson was the biggest baby ever born in Louisiana. I think it was aroung 15.8 lbs range.

    ReplyDelete
  13. haha I remember reading that.
    s
Can you imagine the confusion of buying diapers for a newborn that size...the first couple trips to the store they probably got it wrong.
    s
If he has lost that much weight maybe he can switch to Tackle....that would be a daunting task - a 4-3 DE lining up against that tower.

  14. Ok, so there are 68 players on the roster including those who will become free agents at the end of the month.
    s
If you add the nine draft picks, that would give us 77, which means in a black and white world we'd sign 3 FAs (if we kept all of ours).s Since I expect 6 or 7 free agents to go elsewhere, we'll probably have an 80 man roster that includes about 20 new faces (i did the math on an abacus) +/- 3. ;)

  15. Tin, London said he would be signing a deal w/us whenever he got back in town from Virginia. He said a deal was on the table and just needed his signature.sAny news on that...

  16. Brandon London was signed to a 1 yr contract and he was to be a RFA this year but they've apparently given him an extension for one year for $385,000.s I don't know if he's signed it or not (he probably has), but I DO know that he's single:

  17. Tin, are we going to pay the big bucks for J. Brown(Ravens center)?s We have some money to spend. Where do you and Mr. Bungle see it going?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think we're split on this.s I know Bungle wants to sign Brown, and I want to draft a Center or figure out a way to snap the ball without one...

    ReplyDelete
  19. My feeling is if we're going to become a power offense we need the guys up front to do it. If Jason Brown's dollar demands are too high I would pass. But if the trifecta is okay with it, I say sign him.

  20. Pete, when you work on a computer all day long it's very easy to multi-task. I have a dozen programs open simultaneously most of the time. It's not that big of a deal. If you add up the amount of time it takes to write what I write on a blog you would see it really doesn't take all that long. Less than an hour.
    s
I'm still interested to know why so many people care and keep bringing it up? Any insight into that phenomenon?s

  21. Personally I'm impressed by several Centers in the draft and I don't believe that a new guy would take years to 'groom'.s If he's been playing center for 3 or 4 years at a high level then 3 to 9 months should be enough to make him a starter.s Look at Max Unger.s That guy could lift up Satele and throw him across the field.s There are guys like that in the draft and they won't cost $30M.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Tin, Unger isn't that big. I'm not sure he's even 300 lbs. at 6-5.
    s
What round do you think we'll draft a center at if we do? I wouldn't take one in the 1st round.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Tin, the anonymous above was me. I forget to type in my name.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Mr Anonymous Bungle, I just deleted the last two because they were showing html code.s Plus if you click on 'Anonymous' it says 'Mr Bungle'
    s
Well I just listened to the Sparano press conference on miamidolphins.com and he basically called out Satele and said 'he's a member of our team RIGHT NOW, whether he's a starting center or a guard is yet to be seen".
    s
I think that's the harshest thing Sparano has ever said about a dolphin player thus far.
    s
I'm not suggesting that we use the 1st pick on a center but Sparano said they needed to bring in 14/15 guys in the trenches to contribute, and last year they got 4 or 5.s That implies they are going to be bringing in a lot more.
    s
Unger weighed in at 305 lbs today.s Pretty much all the 2009 centers are about the same size.s He may not be "thick" but he is very strong and has amazing footwork.s He can immobilize a NT without sliding around.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I saw all that weird html stuff. I tried to post about 4 times and it kept doing crazy stuff. Why does anonymous have my name listed in it. Weird stuff going on.
    s
14-15 OL contributing? Only 9 tops make the 53 man roster. Maybe he meant competing. What did him saying only 4-5 guys contributed last year mean? Does that mean 5 or 6 guys didn't?
    s
I'm not sure what we'll do as far as free agency goes. We could target a couple of top guys or go with more quality 2nd tier guys, some of them with more upside. We do need to add depth in a lot of areas and the special teams still need improvement. We might take a more conservative approach and deepen the team through free agency and the draft this year and maybe target a big name player or two next year.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm pretty sure he meant both offensive ADN defensive lines when he said 'in the trenches'.s He was talking about players THEY brought in.s He named Long, Thomas, Merling and Langford.s I think he forgot old man Smiley.s Maybe he was just thinking of the draft when he was listing names.s He called out Shawn Murphy though and Dotson too I think.s Basically he was saying they were pretty successful in the draft in 2008 but they expect more.

    ReplyDelete
  27. *AND, not ADN!s duh!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think the question of the day is what happened in the Vonnie Holliday meeting?s are there any reporters left in Miami or are they all in Indy?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Vonnie Holliday meeting?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Come on Bungle, don't tell me I'm getting the scoop on all the papers now.s I already beat the SS and PBP to the loss of our illustrious kicking coach becoming the KC special team coach by two full days, but surely one of them had to have mentioned that Holliday was scheduled to meet today to possibly restructure his contract.s I'm sure I read it on one of the papers...who else would write about that sort of thing?

    ReplyDelete
  31. It was actually Salguero at the Herald, he snuck it into an unrelated blog about the combine.s He says the meeting would take place in Indy.ss With the workouts starting on Saturday, and the interview schedule picking up, i would assume they would've met today.
    s
BTW the Dolphins did interview a certain Mr. Herman Johnson last night and talked to him about playing Right Tackle.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I did not know about Holliday meeting about his contract.
    s
Herman Johnson at RT? He is massive. With Jake Long on the other side, think about those two bookends. What round?

  33. I think he's projected middle 2nd to middle 3rd right now.

btw he weighed in at 364 lbs.

  35. try posting it two parts?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I tried posting it in quarters and it kept saying the same thing. I think it was a technical error because it wasn't any longer than other stuff that is posted here.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Why is the first comment in this string (Tin, I can't post...) such a big window for a few sentences?s Maybe when you're cutting and pasting it's grabbing extra source code or something.s I don't know why you wouldn't be able to post.s Unless it's a powerpoint presentation!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I use a basic text program. There is some weird code stuff going on. Just like the stuff you deleted. That was written right in the blog format so I have no idea what's going on.

    ReplyDelete
  39. That might've been caused by my work behind the scenes which was at the same time as that comment, but the more recent issue I can't explain.
